[Talk-us] Proposed mapping party

2011-06-13 Thread Nick Hocking
Hi all,
I am proposing the worlds first PIMP (Proxy Individual Mapping Party).
How it goes would be like this. Once I have finished turning Grand Junction
from red to green (in about 1 week), then lots of you (from all over the
world) could check what OSM has against all possible mapping sources (both
maps and imagery).

Where there are any differences or omissions or just confusions then we
could make a list of these locations. I would then plan a route (on my
latest favourite sat-nav device) to visit all these locations. Then I would
(either by myself in a car or with another passenger/geo-photographer) map
all the differences that I/we can in two days.
Once entered into OSm then OSM/Grand junction would be pretty much usable
for tourists etc. I'd leave POI's for others to do, I'm only interested in
roads their names and any turn restrictions. Maybe keen eyed people could
spot one way roads than I/we could check on.
Since I'd be in a rental car. I'd best restrict myself to just paved roads.

Cheers
Nick

[Talk-us] NHD data - where to put preconverted .osm files

2011-06-13 Thread Ben Supnik

Hi Y'all,

This may be slightly premature, but if all goes well, my conversion of
the latest NHD high-res data set to OSM format should complete within 24
hours. The data set will be approximately 15 GB, zipped.

So my question is: where to put this for users to download? My main
motivation for starting this conversion was:

- To let users import, edit and merge NHD data without having to run a
command-line based conversion and
- To let users user the NHD data without having to extract it from the
NHD website (which makes shapefiles hard/impossible to get).

I could potentially throw this onto one of LR's servers for a while at
least. Does OSM have a more 'official' place to hold this kind of data?

If/when we find things wrong with the conversion, I can re-run it. From
the discussion, some of the requested changes would require changes to
the conversion toolchain.

cheers
Ben

The dev server is nice for this kind of stuff:

If you don't want to go to the trouble of getting an account, I'd be
happy to host them for you in mine.

[Talk-us] What happened here?

2011-06-13 Thread Kristian Zoerhoff
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=42.18649lon=-88.65098zoom=15layers=M

Harmony Road has been deleted, and a bunch of connecting roads are
messed up. I was working in this area doing TIGER cleanup in mid-May,
but between NE2 and xybot, the history tool on the web site is swamped
with changesets, and I can't figure out whose needs to be reverted. I
can fix this manually, but I'd rather not if we can narrow it down to
one guilty party.

I really hope it isn't me somehow :-)

OWL is a much better tool for this sort of investigation:

Nice.

I cancontact Martin, but we might need someone to revert the changeset, as
I've certainly never done it before.

Lovely. Hunter Rd got whacked in that changeset. It looked like s/he
was trying to straighten out an admin boundary with some of the node
deletions.

I'll contact them, too. I already contacted mpinnau.

OK, I've heard from both users.

Juliana was a newbie, and messed up an edit badly. Martin tried to fix it,
but just couldn't fix it all by hand. I hate to revert his changeset, as
he's a good mapper, but I don't see how else to fix this.

I don't see any harm or shame in reverting an edit when everybody is
on the same page. If this is a relatively small area, perhaps editing
by hand is the way to go? A revert might just return you to a
previous version with subtle problems that you'll then want to fix
manually anyway.
