Set up multiple projects on the OSMTM, say 1 (or more) per state...

Sounds similar to the HOT OSM Tasking Manager?

Yeah, that's just setting up a HOT tasking manager right? Except the HOT

Here's a map showing where TIGER is better than OSM:

It's using the same data you'll get if you use the "New & Misaligned TIGER
Roads" layer in iD and JOSM, so all of the map above is actionable.
At Mapbox we're working on focusing better our work better going after the
higher order road networks first. Happy to share once we have results here. I
don't have an ETA for this work yet.

Y, this would be the most accurate way to put this. Most often actually
neither data is excellent. We have an opportunity here in the US: create
the most spatially accurate and complete dataset available.

2015-03-15 Thread Ian Dees
As others have mentioned, this map might give false positives where TIGER
data is worse than OSM. It might be better to look at the map of OSM
intersecting TIGER 2007ish and use that to highlight areas where the
geometry hasn't changed since the original import. A roughly similar result
could be found by showing only the geometry from bots + DaveHansenTiger.

[Talk-us] Rail USA: an initial transcontinental super-relation declaration

2015-03-15 Thread stevea
OSM is having a sort of "golden spike" moment: in the USA, there is
now a route=railway super-relation with tags name=Southern Transcon
and operator=BNSF. http://www.osm.org/relation/4673773 links Los
Angeles and Chicago by rail.

This contains eleven component Subdivision relations as members of
this major Subdivision. If you know what that means, great. If you
don't, that's OK. Consider Southern Transcon to be an initial
example of one method by which OSM in the USA defines rail
infrastructure where a named super-relation containing multiple
route=railway Subdivision members is defined as "a major mainline
rail." Passenger rail routes (e.g. Amtrak routes) might be
harmonized into route=train relations using components like these as
basic elements of construction (where it makes sense to do so). This
method can be an important element towards proper and completely
building USA rail in OSM.

This is wet, gloopy finger-paint right now -- there remain gaps and
track alignment inconsistencies in component Subdivision relations,
so a wider community is enticed to reply and continue to improve the
relation members. A concern is that we might not be combining
relations with exactly the right tags, or that we conflate rail
infrastructure via a tagging scheme that is too loose or "ignores
other realities." (Such as how rail corporations and/or states
organize or regulate rail). Especially if you have knowledge of USA
rail organization, please examine this super-relation using your best
OSM judgement, replying here with your comments as to whether or not
this is a good method forward. Thank you in advance.

http://wiki.osm.org/wiki/WikiProject_United_States_railways#OSM_Rail_Structure_in_the_USA

If consensus emerges, others might enter a Northern Transcon
super-relation, continuing to correctly build well-tagged rail
infrastructure in the USA.

I think the correct phrase is "Here's a map showing where TIGER is
different than OSM." Just because new TIGER data is available, doesn't
make it better. In my limited experience with just small parts of two
states, new TIGER data in rural areas is often bad.

So the yellow is where tiger 2013 is better? In a few areas I checked
and had updated OSM, its much worse than OSM. And as Clifford notes, in
many rural counties, new tiger is no better than old tiger, or its
marginally better than old tiger. In a few cases, a county has seen a
decent upgrade in quality with newer tiger, but seems to be a small
minority of cases where I look which is Florida.

And then there is the issue of areas where OSM has not been edited much
and the original tiger is mostly the same as the new tiger, so there's
not much yellow. You can see vast swatchs of this in Alabama, Georgia
and NW Florida - and it lines up to county lines.

Overall, I think the map is somewhat misleading.

[Talk-us] Last day for State of the Map US scholarships!

2015-03-15 Thread Eleanor Tutt
Hello, friends - today is the last day to apply for State of the Map US
scholarships.

Luckily, the scholarship application is quick & easy - so if you need
financial assistance to make it to New York City in June, you still have
time to fill out an application. If you help organize your local
OpenStreetMap community, please share this important deadline with your
fellow mappers. It's not too late!

http://stateofthemap.us/scholarships/

After you apply for a scholarship, I also urge you to submit a talk
proposal - those proposals are due on March 22 and we want to hear your
ideas.

http://stateofthemap.us/talk/

Thanks so much,
Eleanor
