Re: [Talk-us] [Imports] City of Portsmouth, Virginia Building/Address Import

2019-06-15 Thread Jonah Adkins
Hi Pierre, Thanks for taking a look.

The source data for this import is not AI derived - the state GIS office (VGIN)
collects datasets from each city/county in Virginia, then processes them into a
statewide dataset that is released (with a OSM compatible license) on a
quarterly basis.

Was there a particular area in the full or sample OSM files that looked bad?

Thx

[Talk-us] City of Portsmouth, Virginia Building/Address Import

2019-06-13 Thread Jonah Adkins
Hey OSM,

I'd like to propose an import of GIS data for Portsmouth, Virginia. The source
data is provided by the State of Virginia via the Virginia Geographic
Information Network (VGIN) under a compatible license for import. There’s
around 49,000 buildings, most of which include an address and building type.
This import has been discussed on the OSM Slack Virginia channel with
pre-review of the available sample data and I anticipate local mapper support
with the import process. Conflation with existing OSM data will happen during
the import.

For more information and a sample OSM file, see:

[Talk-us] Announcing our Interim Executive Director & Upcoming Election

2019-03-27 Thread Jonah Adkins
In 2018 the board was unable to spend much time working with and supporting the
US mapping community because the majority of the board’s volunteer time was
spent on a hiring process that unfortunately did not work out as planned. It
became clear that the absence of an Executive Director was a step backwards for
the organization, and that it would be best for someone to step into the role
as soon as possible. We’re excited to announce that we have hired Maggie Cawley
to serve as interim Executive Director. Please give her a warm welcome!
[@MaggieMaps].

Maggie brings fifteen years of professional geospatial experience, specializing
in open source geospatial tools and education. Her passion for maps has taken
her all over the world - leading field data collection efforts, training others
in open source geospatial tools, or just spreading the word about
OpenStreetMap. She has been a board member for the last two years and has also
been a long time volunteer for TeachOSM, where she has worked to promote the
integration of geography into classrooms through OpenStreetMap and supported
teachers wanting to learn about OSM.

Now, Maggie will be based in Baltimore working full time to support and grow
OpenStreetMap US. For the remainder of the year, Maggie will be working with
the community and the board to develop a strategic plan for the organization,
including new programs and ideas for OpenStreetMap US. She will be connecting
with the community as much as possible, developing ways to expand programming
and membership, leading fundraising efforts, and supporting the board with
day-to-day administrative responsibilities. We believe her passion for maps,
professional experience, and dedication to the OpenStreetMap community will
benefit OpenStreetMap US over the coming months and we hope you will reach out
and help us welcome her into this new role.

Election to Fill Vacant Seat

As a result of taking on the interim ED role, Maggie is stepping down from her
seat on the board and we will need to fill her shoes through an election. We
urge you to nominate yourself or someone else to join the Board for the
remainder of the year. As a board member, you will help plan for State of the
Map US, be a part of the strategic planning process for the organization, and
support the US mapping community.

Questions? Join the #elections channel on OSM US Slack, tweet us, or email us
anytime.

Nomination Instructions

Nominations will be open from today, March 25 until Sunday March 31. To
nominate yourself, please go to the election wiki page, and add yourself to the
list. You can also see more information about the schedule and updated timeline
there.

Election Details

Monday April 1 and end Sunday April 7. This year based on popular request we’re
excited to announce that we’ll be using Ranked Choice Voting. To be permitted
to vote please make sure your OpenStreetMap US membership is in good standing
by March 31. We should be able to announce the new board member on April 8.

[Talk-us] An update from the OSM-US Board

2019-01-21 Thread Jonah Adkins
Hello Talk-US,

Happy New Year! We’d like to share a few updates with the community as we
settle into 2019.

To shake things up a bit, we’re foregoing a formal proposal/selection process
for State of the Map US and announcing Minneapolis, Minnesota as the location
for the 2019 conference. We hope this change will give us more time for
conference planning, and lead to a better experience for attendees. Please save
the dates of September 6-8, 2019 while we finalize plans for this year’s State
of the Map US. We hope you’re excited to attend and will think about submitting
an awesome talk or spend some time volunteering on the conference committee.
Stay tuned for more info here or in the #sotmus channel on the OpenStreetMap US
Slack .

As you may be aware, OpenStreetMap US hired an Executive Director in October.
While she made some great progress in setting up OpenStreetMap US for success
as an organization, it became clear that it was not the best fit for her
talents, nor for the needs of the organization. As of January 2019, we do not
have an Executive Director. The board is taking some time to determine what’s
next, and remains excited for the growth of the organization.

Finally, we will be holding our elections in the near future. Please consider
running for a position on the board. What better way to participate in the OSM
community! If you’re curious about what a typical board member does, please
reach out to us - bo...@openstreetmap.us or
check #elections channel on the OSM-US Slack.

[Talk-us] Dare County, North Carolina Import

2017-08-06 Thread Jonah Adkins
Hey OSM,

I'd like to propose an import of GIS data for Dare County, NC. The source data
was graciously provided by the GIS staff with compatible license for import.

There’s around 19,000 buildings, most of which include an address, building
type, and year built.

I will be conflating existing OSM edits with GIS footprints during the process,
as well as validating/fixing any issues.

Re: [Talk-us] More about named driveways in Virginia

2017-04-11 Thread Jonah Adkins
hi!

i’ve also run into this issue in the more rural parts of the virginia...
not sure if it’s been mentioned in this thread, but the state GIS org (VGIN)
offers many layers that are collated from all localities. these layers include
services and downloads for buildings, parcels, and roads.

specifically roads are part of the road centerline (RCL) program, an effort to
create a statewide 911 centerline layer. the data is requested from localities
then processed to the state’s data model.

the link for their open data site is
http://vgin.maps.arcgis.com/home/index.html

i’ve requested a few times to them to include a license with their data and not
just an ‘as is’ disclaimer (hoping to do some rural building imports), but
since i’m the only person who’s ever asked i was told the “disclaimer should
suffice”
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

thx,

[Talk-us] Virginia Beach, Virginia Imports

2016-03-01 Thread Jonah Adkins
Hey OSM-ers.

I'd like to propose an import of city-sourced GIS data for the City of Virginia
Beach, Va. The City GIS Office has given the data / license for this purpose.
Conflation will be done carefully by hand, and attributes copied where needed.
142k buildings / 115k with addresses — 81%!!
More info/sample data at links below
Two items of note: there is a geoid field which i will use for splitting the
blogs into small sections for import, but will be deleted before. The height
field will be adjusted before importing as well.

[Talk-us] Hampton, Virginia imports

2015-12-22 Thread Jonah Adkins
Hey OSM-ers.

I'd like to propose an import of city-sourced GIS data for the City of Hampton,
Va.
The City GIS Office has given the data / license for this purpose.

There were only 5 building-type attributes in the source data, so i’ve done
some amenity classifying based on the structure name (schools/churches,etc).
All residential was attributed the same, so I will attempt to split out houses
& apartments based on building square footage.

59k Total Buildings
43k Buildings Addressed - 73% !!

Conflation will be done carefully by hand, and attributes copied where needed.

[Talk-us] City of Poquoson, Va imports

2015-12-09 Thread Jonah Adkins
Hey OSM-ers.

Sorry, I had neglected to cross post this in talk-us@ as well as imports@ &
imports-us@ - but here it is!

I'd like to propose an import of city-sourced GIS data for the City of
Poquoson, Va.
The City Assessor has given the data / license for this purpose.

Very small, mostly residential area

6,075 Total Buildings
4,165 Buildings (!= shed) with Addresses - 95% !!

Conflation will be done by hand, attributes copied where needed.

i've added the osm data in the github repo that has attributes mapped.

it creates a redirect with a correct tile scheme because most ArcGIS
services don't follow normal tiling schemes when they are created - source

you can use the SC Image Service as a custom background in iD or JOSM using
