I was going to look at the buildings too. I’ve used a tool in ArcGIS to
correct some pretty awful buildings, but I couldn’t download them either. If
there is no hurry, I’d check in again with the contact on Monday. It would be
nice to have the buildings with addresses on them.

Hi Julien,

Unfortunately, I have limited knowledge on the data quality as I wasn't able to
download it (the server returns error). I let the CT point of contact (Scott)
know about the problem -- he mentioned in our communication that he forwarded
the issue to the tech support team, but I haven't heard from them since then
and I'm still unable to download it.

Yury, what are your thoughts about the data source quality? Do you
think it's a good idea to import from WestCOG and maybe rely on CT data
for the rest of CT? I tried playing with the data and I didn't see any
difference between drawing the buildings from scratch and having to
simplify and correct CT's data.

Thanks!

Yes, please!

I try to do my part locally. I'm a hiker rather than a cyclist, so that affects
what gets mapped, but I also watch what other people are mapping around here
and try to repair the relations when they get messed up. People keep beating me
to it, though;
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/6133160 got done before I made it down
there. Repairing the relations when someone inadvertently conflated
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/1738631 with
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2692590 was quite a chore! (I found out
about that one because 'Genesee Valley Greenway' showed up in my neighbourhood,
near Albany and nowhere near the Genesee Valley.)

I have never tried to import data on rail-trails, or indeed any other sort of
trail. Not only are the external data sources frequently subject to aggressive
copyright enforcement, but also they are frequently of abysmal data quality. I
map this stuff with literal boots on the literal ground. (I *have* been known
to use the external data sets as a "to do" list. I'm comfortable with that
level of external dependency. Some of the hardliners here would say that once
I've consulted such a data set, I'm permanently mentally contaminated and can't
map the features that it shows, but that way lies madness!)

There are too few of us. I keep seeing the same half-dozen names locally. More
would be welcome.

And route relations are important for sites like Waymarked Trails - it totally
ignores walking and cycling routes that are not indicated with relations, which
is why I wind up doing routes for even relatively trivial stuff like
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/4836600.(although that certainly meets
Richard's five-mile threshold).

To reiterate: yes, please help!

I used that MapBox form a couple months ago to notify missing OSM attribution
for the WunderMap at wunderground.com, e.g.
https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap?lat=27.17=-80.29=1

Just checked and no changes. I'm pretty sure its an OSM basemap due to checking
features I have added that aren't on other maps.

1) Did I miss the attribution? Is it somewhere on the page?

Re: [Talk-us] [Imports] Fort Worth, Texas import

2017-05-27 Thread joe.sapletal
Andrew,

Looks good to me and a great follow up to the Dallas project. I would suggest
contacting the project lead for project 95, they appear to work at mapbox. I
contacted the mapbox user that created a digitizing project that overlapped my
import project and they changed the status on the intersecting tiles to done.
This is keeping people from digitizing when they could be importing higher
quality data.

Subject: [Imports] Fort Worth, Texas import

Hello all-

With the Dallas building import completed except for 1 or 2 residential blocks,
I've begun planning a building import for Fort Worth, the next largest city in
the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The permissions, process, and test results have been documented on the Wiki
here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Fort_Worth,_Texas_import .

There have also been some recent initiatives by the community (see
http://tasks.openstreetmap.us/project/95 ) to trace buildings, and so I'd like
to accelerate this import project and have the community help double check the
imported data. This will help save the community's time from having to start
with a blank slate vs. being a pair of fresh eyes that can make the data
really, really good.

As always, any feedback would be much appreciated.

Best Regards,

Andrew Matheny

Re: [Talk-us] Dakota County, MN Building Import

2017-04-06 Thread joe.sapletal
On that page, it states Dakota County encourages public use of this GIS data.
“The County Board of Commissioners adopted a policy of free and open GIS data,
in collaboration with the other six metropolitan counties in the Twin Cities.
More information on this initiative is available from MetroGIS. “ The page
that in links to is the hub for all this licensing stuff. In the documents it
defines Open as “no legal agreements or other conditional encumbrances required
to access the data” and “no constrain on the use of the data once acquired by
the user”.

Do they have to explicitly say CT/ODbl on the website or does it suffice they
link to the policy created by all counties in the metro that says, free take
it, no contraints?

That's great to hear. Can you ask them to update their website to make
permission to copy and incorporate clear, without any additional
requirements, so that it's compatible with the CT/ODbL?

The terms quoted by Rory and incompatible with OSM.

Hi,

Can I ask about the licence of this data? I don't see anything on
the wikipage about the licence, and the page[1] from Dakota County is
unclear. It doesn't say what the licence is, and has this condition:

Or am I missing something?

[Talk-us] Dakota County, MN Building and Address Import

2017-03-15 Thread joe.sapletal
Ok, I’m back and ready to proceed. I’ve created a pretty decent dataset from
the Dakota County buildings, address points and parcel data.

Project page
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Minnesota/DakotaCounty/Buildings_Import

GitHub repository with sample
https://github.com/DcJoeS/dakota-county-osm-building-import

What I need help with is:
1. I can export the data out into the chunks in Shp format fairly easily, I
know how to script that. And I have decent polygons for doing so. I need a
good tool for converting that to OSM, in bulk.
2. I need help defining/setting up in the US Tasking server.
Who/what/where/etc?
3. Community support that this looks like a good idea. (this should probably
be number 1).

[Talk-us] Dakota County, MN Building Import - chunking

2016-10-01 Thread joe.sapletal
So I’m back at it now that I have some time to get this building import going
again. I have a pretty good process for assembling the data to create
buildings with addresses. The buildings dataset has about 165,000 building
polygons, many of which will have some sort of attributes before I release them
for import. Now, if I prepare the data for the task manager, should I just go
with some random square grid or with some other predetermined shapes like those
from the US Census that cover Dakota County?

What is more palatable, one of the options below or a predetermined square of
some dimension?

Census Block Groups
Polygon count – 232
Buildings per block group
Range 32 – 2527
Average – 705
Median – 636

Census Tracts
Polygons count – 95
Buildings per census tract
Range 184 – 3704
Average – 1721
Median 1627

Census Blocks
Polygon count – 6811 (1517 have no buildings, those that do is 5295)
Buildings per block
Range 1 – 482
Average 31
Median 15

Any guidance will be appreciated
