[Talk-us] battlegrid fixed

2016-08-21 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi all,

I fixed the TIGER battlegrid, it now shows nice Stamen tiles in the
background. Thanks Stamen for providing a great service. (You can donate to
help them provide this service: https://stamen.com/opensource/)

For those who don't know what Battlegrid is, it is a tool that shows
differences between TIGER (US Census) data and OSM in a grid form, so you
can focus on areas that probably still need work from the original TIGER
import.

There is an old blog post for if you want to know more:
https://openstreetmap.us/2013/09/battlegrid/

Or just get to work :)
http://184.73.220.107/battlegrid/#10/35.1603/-106.5324

Right now the backend service does not update the squares, so they may not
represent current reality. I may or may not fix that, it was a bit of a
hack.. It should still give you a good hint of where fixing is still needed.

Thanks & happy mapping

[Talk-us] Battlegrid back up

2015-01-14 Thread Martijn van Exel
Finally I had some time to fix the Battlegrid. (If you hadn't noticed, it
has been broken for a while.)

A diary entry with (slightly) more info and a link to the battlegrid (in
case you didn't know it was battlegrid.us) -->
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/mvexel/diary/28460

Happy mapping,

The standard tag for where a road is misnamed in some other commonly
referred to source is not:name.

How to deal with well-intentioned mappers damaging the map by re-introducing
bad data is an open question. They can actually cause quite a lot of damage
without intending to, and the systematic nature of the damage isn't obvious.

Good point. I do try to remember to delete unnecessary tags, especially the
TIGER name.

My concern is when using tools like Battlegrid, which I strongly support,
users don't look at the tags. They see the TIGER 2013 overlay with a
different name than what OSM contains. This is especially a concern with iD
which unlike JOSM doesn't prominently show tags.

BattleGrid is still a viable tool. Most of our Edit-a-thon are centered
around cleaning up ways in the state.

you should probably delete the tiger: tags containing the incorrect
name as well. once a road has been verified, they contain no useful
information from the OSM point of view.

Only part that doesn't seem to fit this would be that relations aren't ways.

Doesn't seem to be JOSM that's the problem here. Seems to be more of an ID
and Potlatch issue. Both seem to have just crap relation editing systems,
and it's not made anywhere near as clear in these editors as it is in JOSM
that you're about to do something fundamentally damaging to the relation
(JOSM will even warn in extreme cases).

It's a start, but doesn't take a lot into account that would be handy. Any
network lower than state doesn't get picked up (it should, it really really
should), and neither are other important routes, such as bus or bicycle.
 Also misses things like US:OK:Detour, US:OK:Turnpike, US:OK:Business,
etc... It's a start, but it can go farther.

That is a magnificent challenge, but not really a Battle Grid /
MapRoulette one, I think. Maproulette challenges are

* Simple to fix without local knowledge
* Only involve one or two nodes or ways
* Machine-detectable. (provide an SQL query for an osmois snapshot
schema database if possible)

(from http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/MapRoulette/Challenges)

What would really help for the relations is a much improved interface
for checking and editing relations (be it in JOSM or as a separate
thing). What helps a little but not much are the relation pages:

I got a challenge: Maintaining existing route relations and turn
restrictions, which seem to take a battering from Potlatch and id users
disproportionately by removing roles, improperly joining ways, setting
incorrect roles (east/west instead of forward/backward on a child way as
opposed to a child subrelation, clearing roles when they're needed, etc).
