[Talk-us] US Chapter Temporary Board Nomination
I would like to thank Richard Weait for nominating me for the temporary board of OpenStreetMap US, and I am pleased to accept the nomination. I'm Peter Batty, I'm a Brit living in the USA, in downtown Denver, I hosted the first mapping party here (and several since), and am an active mapper. I've worked in the geospatial industry for 20+ years. I am currently Vice President of Geospatial Technology at Ubisense. I have previously been CTO at 2 of the 3 largest geospatial software companies, Intergraph and Smallworld (now part of GE). I'm on the Advisory Boards of FortiusOne and PublicEarth. I have been a founder of two startups, Spatial Networking and Ten Sails, the company that provided early stage funding to and later merged with Ubisense. I've worked as Chief Technology Advisor at Enspiria Solutions. I consulted with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help them initiate the AGCommons Project, focused on improving the incomes and lives of small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa through use of geospatial information. I served for 5 years on the board of GITA (the Geospatial Information and Technology Association http://www.gita.org), a leading geospatial industry association focused on education. Having been around geospatial data and applications for 20+ years, I think OSM is an awesome thing! I have done a lot to promote OSM by discussing it in various conference presentations around the world, and on my blog ( http://geothought.blogspot.com) and twitter (http://twitter.com/pmbatty). I gave a keynote talk at State of the Map 2009 in Amsterdam on "Geodata creation: past, present and future" (http://www.vimeo.com/5589282). As I mentioned above, I have organized several mapping parties in Denver, and I was also a primary organizer of last year's WhereCamp5280 event in Denver. I have served on the board of two non-profit organizations, GITA and my Home Owners' Assocation in Denver (where I was President); on the advisory boards of two small companies as mentioned above; and on the executive management teams of two of the world's top 200 software companies, as well as two startups. I believe that this broad experience would be valuable to the US OSM board. I feel I am a good team player and good at mediating and resolving issues - for example I tried to be a calming influence during the recent heated OSM license debates! I think that my profile and contacts in the geospatial industry can help OSM US liaise with other groups that may be able to help us and promote participation in and usage of OSM, such as GITA, URISA, USGS and others. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
I accept the nomination to serve on the US OpenStreetMap Chapter board. In forming the US OpenStreetMap Chapter, I would bring five years of experience with the Wikimedia Foundation as a volunteer, including involvement with Foundation issues. This past year, I have worked on strategy planning to help advise the Wikimedia Foundation on its future direction and have been involved in program planning and organizing Wikimania (Wikimedia annual conference) in 2008 and 2009. In the United States, I am one of the DC meetup organizers and liaison with the New York City Wikimedia chapter, the first in the United States. We are in discussion to expand the NYC chapter to include the Washington DC area, as well as Boston and other parts of the Northeast United States and perhaps expand one day to become the US chapter. With my education and background is in GIS and geography, being involved with OpenStreetMap for the past year has been a natural fit. Since summer, I have been actively involved with the MappingDC group, including organizing mapping parties and more recently, have served as project coordinator for OpenStreetMap projects for CrisisCommons and CrisisCamp Haiti, taking place over the past month in cities across the US and internationally. For the US OpenStreetMap chapter, I would help guide the organization through the process of incorporation, with particular attention to issues relating to establishing a chapters agreement with the OpenStreetMap Foundation, and be able to take on tasks needed to file incorporation and other needed tasks. I would also seek out legal advice, through contacts at Wikimedia and CrisisCommons, to review the chapters agreement, other documents, etc. I would advise, drawing on lessons learned on what has worked for Wikimedia and its chapters, what has not worked so well, and what we have learned from other similar organizations through the strategy planning process, along with with understanding of how the OpenStreetMap organizational structure differs from Wikimedia as a membership organization and in other ways. -Katie Filbert @filbertkm ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
Along with a great group of nominees, I'm also honored to accept the nomination for the temporary board of the US chapter of the OSM Foundation. As a temporary board member I would be committed to work on the the processes, organizing, and paperwork that is needed to jump start the US Chapter. Based on my role with the OSM community and my contacts in the regional mapping community, I feel like I have the necessary skills and background to contribute to the process. My first involvement with OSM came through my contributions to the Mapnik project and over the last several years I enjoyed collaborating with huge range of OSM enthusiasts to make better maps with Mapnik. I run an independent consultancy [1] doing web development and mapping work mainly for non-profits, government environmental agencies, and small startups. I'm very excited about helping facilitate more involvement, contribution, and innovative uses of OSM by US agencies, and I'm encouraged by the possibilities of a US Chapter. I have a background in biology and GIS and before starting my own company I previously managed the Conservation GIS program for a non- profit called the Wild Salmon Center in Portland, OR, which took me across the Western US, Alaska, and Russia doing mapping work. Now, I'm based out of Seattle, and continue to work with clients doing environmental mapping, some of whom are actively using OSM [2]. Dane Springmeyer [1] http://dbsgeo.com [2] As an example, for the haiti crisis I worked with NOAA to integrate OSM data into their environmental response application: http://bit.ly/ERMA_NOAA ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
Hi, I'll officially throw my hat in as well. I accept the nomination to run for the temporary board of the U.S. Chapter of OSM. I have been active in OpenStreetMap for about a year. A majority of my work has been focused on planning mapping events, building community partnerships and encouraging OSM contributions/use by organizations throughout the US. This includes (among other things) organizing and running the Atlanta Mapathon last October, the Austin, Texas Mapathon (coming in Spring 2010), developing a mapping program for 4-H's Science, Engineering, and Technology Project, developing a mapping program for the Georgia Public Library System that includes librarian training and GPS checkout, and of course mapping my neighborhood and hometown. I am also a regular participant in the conference calls for both the OSM US Local Chapter Working Group and the US SOTM Planning Committee. Outside of OSM, I have experience managing the creation and incorporation of non-governmental organizations, writing (successful) non-profit funding and grant proposals and acting as an organizational liaison to public and private partners. If elected to the temporary board there are three primary areas where I feel my skills could benefit the US Chapter: 1.) Building an open, responsive and efficient organizational structure that can guide the chapter through the process of incorporation, full-term board elections and first national conference. 2.) Working in conjunction with the OSMF to establish a mutually beneficial Chapter Agreement that both preserves the goals, bylaws and core values of OSM and respects the 'spirit of the laws' of each locality. 3.) Creating a sustainable funding strategy for the US OSM Chapter/securing initial donations to support the organization through incorporation and the first year of operation. Thank you for your consideration. Best, Thea Clay ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
Alright then, I'm throwing my hat into the ring... I accept the nomination to run for the temporary board of the U.S. Chapter of OSM. I have been active in the Washington OSM community since late 2008. I have both helped organize and participate mapping parties in the Washington, DC area, contributed to the local OSM-based MappingDC effort (with particular attention to the Arlington County side of the metropolis). My particular interest is on capturing hyperlocal features that may be useful at a neighborhood or community level but aren't captured elsewhere. I believe OSM is unparalleled as a platform for enabling citizens at every level of ability to collect and use that data. Because of that interest, I have been an active contributor to the conference calls to organize the US Chapter. As a board member, I would act to stand up an OSM chapter that reflects the unique needs of the US and remains faithful to the vision of OpenStreetMap. I expect to launch an organization that will engage in community building, outreach to government agencies, grass roots organizations, and inspired individuals with a passion for creating usable public geographic information. Thanks for your consideration, SEJ "Wretches, utter wretches, keep your hands from beans." -Empedocles ___ > Talk-us mailing list > Talk-us@openstreetmap.org > http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us > ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
> I accept the nomination to run for the temporary board of the US Chapter of > OSM. I've been an active mapper for almost 3 years. I've mapped extensively in the Clemson, SC area and less so around my new home in VA, but I'm working on it. I'm a member of the GNOME foundation and have been active in Free Software for the past 10 years. I'm the co-maintainer of the seahorse and seahorse-plugins GNOME modules. Last summer, I was one of GNOME's Google Summer of Code admins. At Clemson U I was a founding member of its LUG, CLUG, and an active member and multiple time board member. As a board member, in addition to handling the tasks of starting up our foundation chapter, I would like to look to the role of the foundation in the future and OSM's use outside of the current community. Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
This thread seems the place to be... I accept the nomination to run for the temporary board of the US Chapter of OSM. I've been active in the OSM community for about ten months and in that time I helped found a local mapping group (MappingDC), I've been acting as secretary for the US Chapter, as well as acting as both organizer and secretary for the US Chapter and the US State of the Map calls while Kate Chapman is away. I'm active on the Local Chapters list, and I'm running this (US OSM Chapter) election. I'm a longtime member of the DC Tech community, including helping Tux.org incorporate and serving on the board of a local tech non-profit in DC. I think my past experience in knowing what has worked and what doesn't could really be an asset to our budding organization and would love to be given the opportunity to use that experience to benefit the OpenStreetMap community. - Serge ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination
I'm going to jump on this thread as well. I accept the nomination to run for the temporary board of the US Chapter of OSM. I was on the board of the DC Rollergirls when they incorporated as a non-profit as well obtained tax-exempt status. I think my experience going through this process will be helpful to the US Chapter of OSM. Though I've been missing from the calls the past couple weeks due to the earthquake in Haiti, previously I was helping organize the US chapter and figuring out how we could run this election process. I'm excited about the prospect of an official US chapter so that we can interact in a more official capacity with governments within the United States. I hope you don't mind me attaching to your thread, Richard. I accept the nomination to run for the temporary board of the US chapter of the OSM Foundation. I believe I would be an excellent temporary board member. I have experience working as a member of and leading organizations in college. In addition, I worked to promote OSM in the US by acquiring donated servers and rack space and have spoken at a local GIS users group. -Ian On Sat, Feb 6, 2010 at 8:20 AM, Richard Welty wrote: > I accept the nomination to run for the temporary board of the US chapter of > the OSM Foundation. > > I have been a participant in the working group for the US chapter since > the regular calls started in November of last year.
