Re: [Talk-us] Current status with highway shields?
Okay, but isn't the ultimate goal of this to get the shields on the map, for the whole world to see? I mean, if I was the one doing this, I wouldn't consider this a finished project until it was on the Standard (Mapnik) layer on openstreetmap.org, integrated into the Carto stylesheet. To be honest, I really hate not seeing the shields on osm.org, especially considering that the tiles for the shield renderings (and even the bl.ocks.org site that you mentioned) take so long to load compared to osm.org. This is why I really want to see you guys get it on the main map. I'm sure Andy Allan would be more than willing to help you guys with this; I mean, he ported the *whole* old XML stylesheet to the new CartoCSS format. Surely he can help you do the same with the code for the shields. You should talk to him about this. I commend you guys on coming this far on the shield project, just as much as I commend Andy Allan for making the Mapnik stylesheet 10 gazillion times easier to work with. I really can't wait to see them on the main map. The current shields look inferior to the real ones that you guys made. -Compdude On Wed, Oct 9, 2013 at 10:40 PM, Toby Murray toby.mur...@gmail.com wrote: The tiles on the OSM-US server are up and running. Re: [Talk-us] Current status with highway shields?
Country or region specific styles will have a hard time making it to the main osm.org layer I have a feeling, just because it makes the stylesheet more complex and there's only so many eyes on it. It would add a bunch of assets to the site that would only be used for U.S. rendering - and then where do you draw the line? Also, the shields code would need to go through the much more rigorous code review that osm.org pull requests typically are subjected to. That said, if you want to help make it happen and start that discussion, please do. I would say giving the shields a nice presence on osm.us would be an achievable shorter term goal. Having a map on osm.us has been a wish of mine and this would be an ideal candidate! Er, sorry about that. I've been extremely busy for about the past two months, and probably won't really have time to dedicate to the shields for at least another month or two. I did start experimenting with carto a while back, so when I have time for the shields again, that'll be a high priority item since, based on my experience so far, I don't think it'll be too hard to work in to the new stylesheet. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] Current status with highway shields?
I don't think the extra complexity of the shields slows down the time it takes to render them. But the tiles themselves on the shield map take way longer to load than on osm.org (which is why I really want the shields on the main OSM website), which I guess is because of a slower tileserver. Also, would it be possible to render the shields on ferry routes? In the state of WA, many of the ferry routes are legally part of the highway system and as such, I've added them to the route relations. If this isn't possible, that's okay. I was just wondering. I appreciate your efforts in all this. Best luck in getting all the county highway shields to render; be glad you won't have any from my corner of this great nation! So, your ultimate plan *is* to get the highway shields showing up on osm.org? Well, we'll have to see. The shield rendering adds a fair bit of additional complexity to the overall rendering process, and I don't know if the osm.org admins would be willing to commit to maintaining the additional complexity. It's possible that they'd prefer to leave it on openstreetmap.us, since the admins there (Ian Dees, mostly) *are* willing to manage the extra stuff. I have a lot more I want to do with the rendering, so its possible I may be able to get it into a state the is more easily integrated into various rendering stacks. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
