[Tango-L] Fox-Trot and Tango
Thanks Sergio, I like your post a lot..and you scored a direct hit with your depiction of 'fox-trot Tango being one danced where the mind of one or both dancers are somewhere else ie: paying the bills. Wow, you hit the nail on the head..that is exactly the non-feeling of the dance when it occurs mil gracias! I will make sure that not a step of Foxtrot Tango creeps in on Tuesday nite and now that I know what I am looking for, I am sure to effectively eradicate it. Let me clear up one mis communication. I never did ballroom foxtrot nor ballroom anything. I did Foxtrot in high school...and why? ...because that was THE dance to dance when I was in high school. get it.??... I am a tad bit older than John Travolta. Anyway, I am fully relieved now that I know what the problem is.. thanks again, Sergio and all others who contributed to this thread. - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Re: [Tango-L] Foxtrot to Tango, how do I do it?
I would argue that you are not learning from the internet, but you are copying things you see and then asking your partners to be your teachers. This is a rather precarious position for them to be in, especially since it is likely your partner doesn't know how to lead, doesn't know that she is supposed to fix you, and has little experience in teaching. So we here on the list have joined her now in the precarious position of trying to fix you, using only your own comments and a throwaway statement from a follower. But we are the helpful sort. Let's look at some other things she may have meant - using my experiences of dancing with people who learned from videos and teaching people from the ballroom world. Perhaps the reason she said you are dancing foxtrot was because you are dancing figures instead of dancing to the music? Perhaps you are worried too much about the next figure you are doing, instead of the connection and the music? Perhaps you are not leading, but expecting your partner to know her part? Perhaps your embrace, connection and posture feels like that from foxtrot, not tango? (Most likely, I would guess) These are things that cannot easily be learned from videos. Lois Donnay Minnesota Yes, thanks to Astrid, I realize that I am commited to learning to Tango from the internet. What could be more of a challenge? I love it! I'll let you know how I do..meanwhile, I will avidly read and consider all suggestions garnered from Tango-LHow would you help this hard-headed Tango baby?? ___ Tango-L mailing list Tango-L@mit.edu http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/tango-l
Re: [Tango-L] Foxtrot to Tango, how do I do it?
... on the question of Why did she say you were dancing foxtrot? ... Lois proposed several plausible answers, but the thought that came to my mind when I first read Mario's post was that it might have been the rhythmic structure rather than steps or embrace. I don't know foxtrot, but I know that it has a rhythmic character that is identifiable to those who know the music and dance. Is it quick-quick-slow-slow? I'm guessing. But whatever it is, perhaps your dancing frequently uses that rhythm. Hello Michael, The problem is when the man THINKS he's invited a particular step but he has really invited something else (e.g., torso says one thing, arm says something else). Ergo, it's much better to see her response to what he thought he invited. Re: [Tango-L] Bridge to the Tango
Instructional videos are a bit of a fraught issue. When my wife and I were in BsAs last year, Aurora Lubiz recommended that we buy the 'Tango Baile Nuestro' documentary for the scenes of 70s milonga dancing in that movie. I asked for it in every tango shop that I went into but no one had it. Being Argentinean however they never admit that they don't have something, but always bring out something else which they try and sell you instead (how I love the people there!). In most cases it was instructional videos and I remember at Tango Brujo the sales assistant, a very attractive young portena dancer, brought out a 'learn tango in 12 lessons' by Copes. As soon as she said the title however a smile spread across her face and she said something like 'yes tango is very easy if you can learn it in 12 lessons'. We both burst out laughing. Anyway, I found the below videos with Fabian Salas and Cecilia Gonzales useful, at least for relative beginners and I am sure they are readily avai! lable which is a plus: http://www.cosmotango.com/TDvideos.htm Victor Bennetts The only tango instructional DVDs I recommend are Un Tal Gavito There are 3 in the series. Re: [Tango-L] Bridge to the Tango
Daniel Trenner and crew really knew what they were doing with Bridge to the Tango. I wish they were still available. All of the followers technique videos are priceless. I think there were three. I think all followers should have a copy. These five are great on video and beyond genius in person: Brooke Burdett Daniel Trenner Luciana Valle Rebecca Schulman Sharna Fabiano The rest of these are, also, incredible: Jose Garafolo Omar Vega Some of Fernanda Ghi and Guillermo Merlo Carolina Zkalski and Diego Di Falco (especially the waltz figures) El Pulpo I don't remember his full name, was it Zotto and Carolina? Anyway, it took me a bit to understand what Zotto was doing. I thought it was she who was so good (and she is!). Then, my parnter told me to go back and watch how he lead her. I am sooo glad she said that! He shows the way to setup your follower in various positions related to your body and in conjunction with the music. Study Zotto and dance to D'Arienzo!!! That man's lead is clean! Although I've never seen any of his videos, I have taken a lot of workshops with Fabian Salas. I have to believe that his videos must be great. Even though I had workshops and 6-week classes over and over again with most of the people on this list, I can still go to their videos and, in most any section, refresh my memory or cleanup my technique. But, where in the world are you going to find these videos? --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'd like to hear from someone who has experience with the Bridge to the Tango CDs/DVDs.? Re: [Tango-L] women as leader
I lead a lot - I think I am the only woman lead I know who is NOT a teacher. I started because I was tired of waiting to dance. I suppose it's pretty much the same everywhere - many more follows than leads.some nights, I pretty much lead all night - and I've started to really enjoy it - not more than following, but as much. Just two different ways to experience the dance. At first I was a little unsure leading away from home, but now I don't even think about it - although I am often the only woman leading. I also much prefer close embrace - as a lead and as a follow.. barbra Have you joined the Buffalo Argentine Tango Society Yahoo! group yet? Thanks! -Original Message- From: Dyane Auclair [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: tango list tango-l@mit.edu Sent: Mon, 25 Feb 2008 3:44 pm Subject: [Tango-L] women as leader Hi everyone, I have been following this list only recently so forgive me if this subject has been discussed previously. I have been dancing tango for about 3 years. Unfortunately I have not yet find a regular partner with whom I can really work hard at developing very good following skills, at developing a good connection, and at developing a good sense of musicality. Of course I had the occasional beautiful tango experience with some good leaders but there is no continuity. So as a new challenge I have decided to go back to basics and learn to become a LEADER while I am still searching for the right dancing partner. Why do I feel so much resistence in my community? It seems that I receive lot of discouraging signals from other dancers (both men and women) and from teachers. Is it because most people believe that a good connection can only exist betwen a man and a woman and since tango is nothing without a good connection there is no point in putting any effort into that direction. Or is it simply because tangeros/tangeras love stereotypes? Is it threatening for other leaders? I sincerely believe that I will become a better follower because I will have a better understanding of the problems that the leader encounters.
