  Started the sorting office
Pressed the create new filter button
That was a mistake, so I did
  Edit -> Undo
On the left side the new filter disappeared on the right side my

I selected an existing filter and got:
AV at address 004042BC read of address 6568545C

It reproduces every time when I don't have a filter selected before
creating the new one and almost every time when another filter is
  selected. The AV addresses change.

Well, let's look at what is written in those instructions for "Other",
which is what I also followed.

What it says is:
___

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server â requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995
___

When I look at my TB connection options, I see "Regular", "STARTTLS",
and "TLS". Nowhere do I see "SSL". Think of me as an ordinary user
with no understanding of what these three protocols mean (which is not
far wrong). I wouldn't have a clue which one to choose. I don't see
"SSL". So what do I do? I go to the help file and run a search for
"SSL". Do I find it? No, I do not! So, Tony, how can you describe this
as "very easy"? Maybe it is very easy for you, but it is certainly not
very easy for the average user.

Let's look now at the instructions for setting up SMTP.

___

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server â requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use
authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587
___

So now I am looking for STARTTLS or SSL (or so it seems). We already
know that SSL is not there. Unfortunately, STARTTLS is there. But when
I try to use it, the STARTTLS option (secure to regular port) does not
work. I have to use the TLS option (secure to dedicated port). Again,
maybe this is all "very easy" for you, but I found it rather
confusing.

The fact that Gmail seems to be using a somewhat different and
possibly contradicting terminology than TB makes me wonder whether the
TB use of terminology is accurate or up to date. And so I remarked as
follows:

> > This is all that I was saying here. Think of it as another documentation
> > complaint.

You answered:

> And I believe that the documentation for setting up TB! should be on the
> Google site.

Yes, definitely! In one of my first messages on this topic, I
explicitly regretted that there was no specific instructions on the
Google site regarding configuring TB for Gmail. There seems to be a
marketing and support issue here. Ritlabs should be in contact with
Gmail to get such instructions posted. Ideally, the Ritlabs technical
writer should be involved in this task, but... as we all know...
Ritlabs does not have a technical writer nor does it seem very serious
about getting one. :-(

And I believe that the documentation for setting up TB! should be on the

Tony, I don't need to back you up. My complaint is already on file
with Google long before you sent yours. I also don't see a need for
petitioning like that. I am sure that a lot of people have complained
on this point, not just a few TB users.

I read it. My arguments are already on file with Gmail. But if you are
still in correspondence with Google on this subject, feel free to use
my arguments as if they are your own. :-)

> > So it is essential that TB support Gmail and do it smoothly.
>

Google states clearly that an email client will only be supported if
the client supports SMTP authentication. That is the only restriction
that I saw. But the general instructions for configuration did not
tally directly with the TB interface. That makes me wonder whether the
terminology used in our TB interface is standard. TB works with Gmail,
but it requires more savvy than it should to make that happen. This is
all that I was saying here. Think of it as another documentation
complaint.

The reason why I said it is essential that TB support Gmail and do it
smoothly is simply because of the number of TB users who are likely to
have Gmail accounts in the future and who will want to use TB to
access Gmail. It is Ritlabs' choice, of course, but I think the
alternative is to handle an unnecessary and costly support load of
translating the instructions on the Gmail server to each TB user with
Gmail. I expect that TB could even lose some prospective customers -
people who download the shareware, test it out on their Gmail account,
fail to find an easy way to configure TB, and abandon TB for something
that seems to work better. Think of this as a marketing suggestion.

Because they conform to the RFCs. 587 is the "mail submission port"
that must provide STARTTLS and AUTH, and 465 is the (legacy)
sSMTP/SMTP-over-SSL port that works with SSL from the beginning of the

Right on, Tony, right on!

I use mostly European authored software as it is much better coded and
is alot more compatible. Even though I am an American I get very tired
of Microsoft, Intuit and many others who believe the world should bow
down at their doorstep instead of serving the world. I am an original
beta tester for QuickBooks and know Scott Cook on a first name basis.
He was successful by serving others with a passion. Now Intuit is
self-serving and obnoxious. Nothing like money and "success" to ruin
something good.

Likewise. FWIW, this problem is not just confined to POP3. You notice
it also when you use the Web interface. So I first encountered it
about a month ago and complained to the Gmail support staff at that
time. I also submitted a wish to Google a few days ago that they
either change the behavior or at least provide an option to change the
behavior.

As I see it, Google's argument about a cluttered Inbox fails on two
points. (1) Google keeps reminding you that you have 1Gb space and you
don't need to worry about deleting anything. So why should users worry
about a few duplicate messages? (2) Gmail provides filters and an
efficient anti-spam engine that are quite effective at reducing
clutter of the Inbox.

Having said all that, I can almost live with the way Google has this
set up. Almost. What disturbs me the most is the fact that threading
of messages gets confused. A private reply to mailing list message
gets muddled in with a public reply. This could lead to unfortunate
events. :-) And while I do get a notice from Google if a message I
send to a mailing list is not received by the list, Google would
probably not be able to inform me that my message never appeared on
the list if it is a moderated list and my message was not approved by
the moderator.

So I am also not a happy camper on this point. I am getting by with
the occasionally muddled threading in Google's Web interface and
making do with some Outgoing Mail filters in TB. It is not entirely
satisfactory, but it is not so bad either - a relatively small
inconvenience (hopefully temporary) to endure while reaping the
numerous benefits

> BTW, I do not think Gmail AND TB are OT. It may well belong to TBUDL,
> because there are certainly others experiencing the same problems
> (e.g. ports, not receiving copies etc.).

Likewise. Right now it looks like Gmail could be the wave of the
future. I expect that a significant percentage of TB users will have
Gmail accounts and that this percentage will go on increasing for a
while. So it is essential that TB support Gmail and do it smoothly. It
is disappointing that there are no direct instructions for configuring
TB for POP3 in the Gmail help. It was a bit confusing at first,
because the general instructions did not correspond neatly with the
interface of TB.

Sorry, I have not the time to read TBOT (and I do not remember my very
old Yahoogroups-password; they seem to have changed the reminder
function to enter location, postal code etc. Which I certainly did not
enter back on egroups.).

But I would be interested to hear what Gmail replies to your email.

BTW, I do not think Gmail AND TB are OT. It may well belong to TBUDL,
because there are certainly others experiencing the same problems
(e.g. ports, not receiving copies etc.).
