Re: 5.0.22.7 (Virtual folders)

2011-08-11 Thread Tony Hoare
Hello Alto,

TF They are (were?) very useful in v4, as they updated automagically.

Not here, I'm afraid: In v4 a VF worked correctly exactly once, right
after it had been created. If TB was shut down and started again, the
VF became empty (0 messages.) It stayed empty, too, regardless of what
 was selected or refiltered.

In v5, a VF is not automatically updated, but as soon as I select the
parent folder, it is, and the messages that are filtered into it once
 stay there for the future.

At least, that's how VF behave on my machines.

I can't work out exactly when virtual folders are updated. Selecting
the VF, the parent folder or the source folder doesn't do it. Pressing
refresh in each of those folders doesn't update either.

If I read a message in the VF, it is marked as read in the VF and the
source folder.

If I read the message or mark as read (without reading) in the source
folder the VF is not updated.

VF's are updated after a restart. This is not immediate and takes up
to a minute with a source folder of 9,000 messages.

Auto-Refresh and Store State between session don't seem to do anything
useful.

Such a long-running PITA. :-(

After deleting the autorun.inf and a complete reboot of the system,

I must say I reverted from Version 5 back to Version 4.2.44.2 due
to dysfunctional VF, or to be more precise: dysfunctional MailTicker
window (which is likewise a virtual folder, of course). The state of
messages in MailTicket's virtual-folder window just never corresponded
to the state of messages in The Bat!'s main window. For example, if I
marked a message parked in MailTicker's window, it would only show
parked in The Bat!'s main window, while in MailTicker's window
it would still show as unparked. Same for read/unread messages,
flagged/unflagged messages, etc. So, I returned to Version 4.2.44.2,
which has none of these issues. (But which still has the buggy
re-directing of HTML messages, so it's not an ideal remedy for me.)

I even encountered this bizarre bug in MailTicker in Version 5:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10440809/misc/preciarknute_spravy_v_okne_Mail_Tickera.gif
(strike-through lines for deleted messages in the top-priority MailTicker
window?!)

Plus, I was never able to start The Bat! normally in Version 5 under
Windows 7 64-bit (I tried two different Versions 5: the two most recent
non-Betas). It sometimes took up to 30 (!) launches of the EXE file to
have The Bat! launched, which could take up to 5 or 10 minutes of time.
Restarting Windows made no difference in trying. The splash screen
always appeared for a split second, without The Bat! launching. Only
very infrequently, the following bizarre pair of error messages popped
up on the screen instead of The Bat!:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10440809/misc/Bat_Start_Crash.gif
(This although I don't remember ever having used the View Mode Setup
dialog window in The Bat.)

Returning to 4.2.44.2 made all these bugs disappear and everything
works fine here. Well, except for the dysfunctional redirection of HTML
messages -- a long-standing bug of 10 years or so, not *entirely*
satisfactorily resolved in Version 5, either: the TO, CC, BCC fields
can't be accessed via the keyboard in Version 5. Please either
make the TO, CC, BCC fields in the re-direction window accessible
standard-wise via TAB and SHIFT+TAB, or please just assign
a keyboard-shortcut letter to each field, such as T, C, B for
accessing TO, CC, BCC. Thanks in advance for the fix. :-)

Huh? ;-) I couldn't live without the MailTicker for a minute. Also,
I'm the mail server admin for a large school, and I receive hundreds
of messages every single day, which means The Bat! is flapping its
wings practically the whole day long on my PC, so that that indication
is useless for me.

In contrast, the MailTicker window accomplishes exactly what I need
in the course of the day: it filters and shows me only the most important
messages from the most important folders; and I can handle them all from
within MailTicker's window, without ever having to access The Bat's main
window! That's exactly what I love: a lean, reduced mail client for
the busy hours of a working day. Then, in the evening, I can open
The Bat's main window and handle all the other messages delivered
in the course of the day which I chose to ignore for the duration
of office hours, because they weren't important enough to interrupt
my work-flow.

Bottom line: Mail Ticker is indispensable for me, and because
it doesn't work in Version 5, I can't use Version 5 for now.
