The interesting thing was... it only happened on the second item in
the list. The rest (3rd, 4th, 5th etc) all appeared fine, and so did
the first. I can repeat it every time.

I confirm that I cannot confirm. What I mean is, if I were to send a
screenshot, it would look like Peter's, not like Jonathan's.

I'd noticed ;)

 Perhaps it's the skin... ;-)

Not using a skin :) Just changed the colour from awful blue to a nice
silver :) Maybe it's just XP (with SP1) being flaky on the display.
Wouldn't surprise me.
