Hmm, I am often using remove duplicates without having all "versions"
disappear.

If you manually delete a duplicate, you can run into problems.

Yes - and no (sort-of).

I think that another bad thing is happening with these duplicates.
Since these are not true duplicates in the strictest sense, (ie they
are not on the server, just in the local folder) if you delete
one of the messages, manually or by using Delete Duplicates, when you
do a purge it will delete the only message that is on the server and
when it resyncs with the local folder you will have permanently lost
the original messages.

If you can understand my rambling, can anyone confirm?

Setting flags (marking as read for instance, seems better/more
reliable).

IMAP seems to be running faster but alas I am getting more duplicates
now than ever: usually one in the inbox and two in the folder it is
filtered to (one ghost message).

There are no dups now, working well... thanks, IMAP seems much improved
overall.

However there is still a major problem. I inadvertently deleted a message in
my inbox... read a few more messages, and when I went back to "browse
deleted messages," it was no longer there, nor was there any of the 80 or so
emails that I had deleted previously... This occurred without me manually
purging/compressing the folder. I am assuming this occurred when the folder
was refreshing.. and as you know, this is a definite no-no in IMAP.

The protocol calls for permanent removal of email by a 2 step method, first
being to delete the email, then using the expunge command to permanently
remove mail from the server. Mail should only be expunged by the user, or by
a feature option by the mail client when closing out.. but... as TB! stands
now, by taking over and expunging email that has been deleted, at free will,
at any time, without user knowledge, is not good.

I marked your test message unread, making it the only unread message
in my account. I then hit alt-f2, which checks mail for all accounts
and did not duplicate your complaint.

I don't understand why you are using check mail for all accounts with
your IMAP account, since new mail always arrives in short order
without, and I think the refresh command would be the preferred method
with IMAP, but I don't have ignore check all mail command ticked for
my IMAP account so it did perform whatever gets performed with IMAP
accounts when requested.

Re: Test message for duplicates

2006-01-26 Thread Stuart Cuddy
Hello Stuart,
Thursday, January 26, 2006, 8:06:50 PM, you wrote:

SC> Testing duplicates.

I sent the test message at which time I had 0 unread messages in my TB
folder. When the message arrived, it showed up as 1 message in my TB
folder where it was filtered upon arrival. My inbox showed 0 (1)
indicating that there were no Unread messages in the Inbox, but there
was 1 Unread message in a subfolder (ie TB folder). I waited a couple
of minutes to see if auto refreshes did anything, they did not.

I then pressed F2 (My Shortcut) to Check New mail for All, at which
point a duplicate appeared in my TB folder, although the count in
the folder remained as 1. The Inbox however changed to 0 (2).

Can anyone using IMAP, confirm my findings. You will probably have to
use the drop down to check all mail instead of my F2 shortcut.

I also apologize for not using IMAP in the subject so non IMAP users
could ignore this thread.
