Search in VF

2004-05-02 Thread max
Hello tbbeta,

I can't search in VF using standard search dialog. Moreover, the
search does not seem to start at all, but returns "0 messages"
  immediately.

Is this a normal behavior, or a bug?

  Using TB 2.10.03 on Win2000 sp4.

It isn't a bug, as the VF actually IS a search result. The normal
search tool should be disabled for VFs.

i think search in VF should be implemented (just my personal opinion), because
otherwise thebat's
search functionality on combined conditions are too weak. even today we still don't
have a decent
method to search mails whose sender is "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and subject contains
"class".

What is wrong with "[EMAIL PROTECTED]&class" for "Search for" and select "subject" and
"sender"
for scope?

I just used "public-samsonsu-/[EMAIL PROTECTED]&Re:

scope on TBBETA folder and found only your original message. Works fine!

Not completely though. I still wish wish I could flag (assign to colour
group) a message as "For Reply" .AND. "Important" .AND. "For Reference",
if you now what I mean.

That's exactly my point of the word "decent". since this feature is already nicely
implemented in
VF, I would natually hope the same functionality (or even more powerful) to be done in
"search
dialog". Otherwise it is very inconvinient to find a message. For example, in order to
find a
message with multiple conditions, i need to create a VF and set the conditions in the
properties
dialog; or leave a "live" VF as "use for everyday search" and keep modifying its
properties every
time i need. Both are not the "right" thing to do.

The other point is that if i type "john & class" in text box and check "subject" and
"sender", it is
not exactly what i want, the condition might be wider or narrower than what i expect,
as the program
might try to match "john" in "subject" and "class" in "sender". This defeats the
purpose of using
multiple conditions: accurate search.

alright, i agree it is a temporary solution so far. at least better
than none :)

is it ok now? and this shows thebat's line wrapping needs to be
improved :)

Not really.

You were probably a more advanced user of VA than I. Probably the same
with TB. I got into some of the basic stuff, filtering, and did mail
merges. VA was a resource in that it could store large mail base, and I
could use bookmarks to find/store important stuff. TB covers VA from and
email perspective with VFs and more with the macro capability. I do wish
you could do a mail merge from data from some type of tab or comma
delimited file. You wouldn't have to jump through hoops to put the data
temporarily in the AB.

The benefit of VA for me was really the all in one and it threaded
discussions pretty well. By all in one I mean email, CIS forums, and
newsgroups.

I agree with you the Search Tool can be improved but, since we have VFs
now I assume it is not of high priority. I use a "live" VF for most of
my searches now.

BTW, can't you set Agent to wrap lines at 72 characters or so? It is
not easy to read your messages.

Not necessarily. It could be the window split used is not wide enough
for the line length you were using. Just a guess!

(1) Grab a calculator (you won't be able to do this one in your head).
(2) Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area
code). (3) Multiply by 80. (4) Add 1 (5) Multiply by 250. (6) Add
the last 4 digits of your phone number. (7) Add the last 4 digits of
your phone number again. (8) Subtract 250 (9) Divide number by 2. Do
you recognize the answer?

Thanks, Val.
Is it going to be implemented?

Second issue I have - since opening a folder 20K messages in my TB! at work
takes ages I had to do some shaman dances with folders (танцы с бубном). I'm
trying to keep messages only for last month (it's around 4K messages for
me). First I've created a VF with a filter to show messages for past 31
days, but since search in VF is not implemented yet I had to create a normal
filter (old one) to move all messages older than 31 days to Archive. Now I'm
seeing a glitch, at least I think it's a glitch - in a filter I've set
"Message is older than" 31 days, but messages *created* on 24 Jun and
*received* on 12 Jul are still in the folder.

Let me explain - I've been on vacation and received the mail on Jul 12th, so
my guess is - filter looks at *received* and not on *created* date, which is
wrong, no? VF behaves correctly in this case - looks at *created* date.

With best regards.
