But if they put these settings anywhere (as they do -- in Netscape),
then it's fairly easy to find them.

Simply send yourself an e-mail with some big-ass atachment and run
netstat once while uploading it and once while downloading.

This way you could get the SMTP and POP3 server ip's (if of course
not-knowing the adress is the only problem with those, if not -- you
can always try to sniff your own communication with the server to
check what is the program saying, but it's a bit more tricky).

Of course you could always use ethereal and monitor your connection to
see what data appears to be moving on ports 25 and 110. This would
give you the server addresses. I always thought the problem was that
the servers used non standard protocalls.

As far as I know its not possible just using The Bat. However, you can
use this program that resides in the system tray to accomplish this.
Using EnetBot you can send and receive email from all of your aol
accounts. Its shareware, is reasonably priced and works quite well.

Yes, and I think that both, AOL's own client and Netscape 6, have
built-in settings for AOL email accounts. Don't forget that AOL
is the owner of Netscape.

I don't quite understand you here. Who wants The Bat? Does
Netscape run The Bat?

> I try to define reasons and without AOL can imagine nothing

IMHO the reason is that you don't have AOL's server data to
create an account in The Bat. And how should The Bat know where
to get the messages from?

AFAIK, it's not possible, but that's not TB!'s fault. IIRC AOL
doesn't publish the addresses of their pop and smtp servers. "For
security reasons" as they like to put it themselves.
