TheBat! Loganalyzer - First Alpha Version

2001-11-27 Thread Peter Palmreuther

Hello List,

I took same 'spare time' (although it wasn't, I took it *G*) and tried
to write something similar to the beginning of an application that
could sometime be a log analyzer.

It's location is:

http://www.ZentrumDerArbeit.org/TheBat!/tb_log/tb_log_analyzer.zip

It's packed size is 287 KByte.

If someone is interested in testing, don't hesitate :-)
I'm open to responses, especially what function should be further
implemented. I did a request at RIT for being able to make an overall
comparison of all filters an account offers, but for being able to
implement this I need a file description. So let's wait if and what
RIT answers.

Anyway .. have fun, if you like testing and stupid looking programs:
try it out, if not: leave it :-)

Uhm, *some* explanations in the program wouldn't hurt. I put
it in my TB data dir, it sees the accounts that I run, but
not the log. So both the right pane and the bottom pane stay
perfectly empty. Where exactly does one put it? How do you
point it to your log?

I asked because you wanted to _detect_ them.
As the 'X' header 'X-Spam-Chance' is not know to me I thought you
might want to detect something already in the message not a string you
added by yourself.

For this detection the best I can recommend is an regular expression
module.

If you tell me what language your tool is written in I could try to
give a hint where to find something that fits your needs.

Yeah, it is in fact not yet _optimized_ for speed. My log files were
20k when starting to write this program, I've set them to grow up to
200 right know for a better test basis.
The next thing is both at work and at home I'm on a 750-900 MHz CPU
with lots of RAM so speed is seldom a criteria.

I'll implement some debugging features like 'run time' check to get
exact results and I'll try to optimize the pattern matching for fasten
the tool ... The problem is: I still don't have _exact_ patterns I can
parse for as it seems the log file entries are in the same language
TheBat! is in while creating them. So if somebody changes the language
the log changes too ... from that position on forward!
The problem with this (for now) is: I haven't found a global 'killer
matching' that extracts only the lines of interest for
splitting/parsing them, instead I've to inspect every line for some
border criteria and if they fit I do further inspecting.
Next problem is I don't know how detailed the output should be ... is
'Date' really necessary? Or 'From'? Or 'Destination' (folder)? That's
all points slowing down the tool .. The more details to extract the
more detailed the pattern ... the slower the program.

I do appreciate any hint what's wrong as the only thing I'm able to do
alone is writing a body of program fitting on my systems. Everything
else I have to be reported by others as I'm only able to test on a
limited count of systems (20 computers at work, only one with TheBat!
installed: mine).

Thx for every response and idea

Re: TheBat! Loganalyzer - First Alpha Version

2001-11-27 Thread Peter Palmreuther

Hello List,

A new version is up:

http://www.pitpalme.de/TheBat!/tb_log/tb_log_analyzer.zip

Version: 0.1.0.5

Changes:
  - some output to status bar added
  - debug output intruduces
  - The program should now pop up an error message is no log file is
found.
  - if no data to evaluate where found a also message should be seen.
  - the most right toolbar button (exclamation mark) offers a text
area containing all lines with incoming mail.
In case there's any line containing 'processed by ...' (maybe
translated into your language) copy that output and send it
directly to me, I'll evaluate what's going wrong

Additional info: two mails I received make me thinking about 1.53
series maybe not putting 'processed by ...' into log file. Ergo: if
this is true this toll will not work with TB! versions below 1.54/Beta
If somebody with 1.53 (and only 1.53, beta testing may introduce
temporarily additional informations going into log file) gets a
useful result, please write to me ... something serious is happening
than!

I believe, it haven't any value... Let's see at account string

23.11.2001, 19:08:56: FETCH - received message from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (2987 bytes)
(processed by MyMail, TB, moved to \\Lists\TB)
28.11.2001, 03:25:03: FETCH - received message from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (4893
 bytes)

What I can say:

for incoming messages (you handle only this type, and
it's bad :-)) first char is only, _always_

word with @ is from address _always_ too

text inside first brackets is size _always_

if there are not second brackets pair - there are not filters in work

filters and destination folders can be _easy_ detected and separated
They are _always_ inside_ second brackets, they have from 'name of'
and _folders_ have char \ in name... I'm not sure (and too lazy to
test now - 4 am) is it possible to have \ in filter name, but,
anyway, it must work as first draft

PP So if somebody changes the language
PP the log changes too ... from that position on forward!
I tried to show you, that it can't change nothing in good-planned algo
:-)

PP Next problem is I don't know how detailed the output should be ... is

No ideas :-)... I use eyes on logs, in hard cases - grep | gawk :-)...
It's enough for me

It's my new server-side toy, with it I got messages with such headers
(partially)

PP X-Scanner: Scanned by Inflex 1.0.11 - (http://pldaniels.com/inflex/)
PP Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r

good mess

PP boundary==_NextPart_000_223E_01C0FF3D.B34F23D0

I want filter in The Bat (with RegExp for mathing, yes), which selects
only _possible spam message_ (number is 5 or more) and move these
messes to separate zoo, where I can open spam hunting... I don't
want move _all except zero_, it's bad solution (I think)

Excellent! When I go to debug mode, it gives the log file -
which means that I see that your program can indeed acces it.
However, when I click on one of my accounts - or reclick the

No line (out of 279 parsed) found indicating filtering.
