I have had a long chat with the ISP and they say it appears to be a application
clash with port 110.

Any suggestions as to how to identify w/o reinstalling / reformmating the m/c

Will try this after this mail goes thru...

ACM> Were you always running Zone Alarm, even before this problem arose?

Yeah I was using ZA even before. This problem began on friday afternoon. I used
TPF earlier but that was clashing with the ISP's leased IP address. It would not
renew the lease after 3 hrs set by the ISP. So had to reboot the machine after 3
hrs. That problem was resolved when I switched over to ZA over a month back.

Were you always running Zone Alarm, even before this problem arose?

Have you tried rebooting?

I use Zone Alarm for the fire wall. Have disabled ZA and checked with no luck.

I can also ping to the ISP's server through out. FTP & HTTP downloads work just
fine. I have been down loading MP3 songs whole day. (while researching) this
problem.

AL> Does POP (or IMAP) works well for servers inside net?!

I cannot really confirm this but the ISP provides for his own e-mail box (pop)
and the problem exists when I try to down load from this server also.

PP> it seems to be a general network congestion problem with your system

I would have agreed if the problem were with downloads in general. But what I
have narrowed is that the problem surfaces under the following condidtions

1 E-Mail larger than 15 k (Approx)
2. When I use the broad band connection only.

All mails to this account (used for groups like TBUDL/TBTECH) have been
downloading well.

PP> Some days ago somebody wrote something similar but he was using a 56k
PP> modem. IIRC he also used W2K Pro. So it seems there's some option in

I too recall this and did a quick search but did not find the messages. Will
checkout again.

PP> What exactly does happen if you try to download a mail larger than

PP> start?

The connection starts. In fact if there a small mail ahead of a larger mail, then
the small sized mail gets downloaded, then depending on the mail 10-30% of the
larger sized mail also gets downloaded.

When I used outlook it gave me a time out error as follows

"A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account:
'mail.kaladyinc.com', Server: 'mail.kaladyinc.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19"

PP> As you're connected through broadband I guess the connetion

PP> suddenly interrupt and nothing seems to happen?

Yes I am connected via ethernet. I did not check on the light of the NIC will do
so now. Unfortunately as I switched on the machine in the morning the connection
seems to be down and now using dial up.

PP> What if you try to surf while downloading? Does this work or is there some general
PP> network congestion/blocking?

As is evident from http://www.mailmejobs.com/conc.jpg I have waited for as much
as 7 hours...during this time I have continued surfing and downloading w/o any
problems.

Also I was able to investigate further by visiting my neighbour who also uses
the same ISP (broadband) and was successfully able to download messages
irrespective of size. The ISP also provides for dial up access and when I use
this method the download is successful.

There also does not seem to be a problem sending large sized mails. Cause I have
been testing by sending out mails to various servers and then trying to down
load. I use ADR as my local SMTP.

PP> At least you can try to get used with a packet sniffer like [1] ,
PP> direct download URL [2]. You'll also need [3] or [4].

Will work on this in the mean time.

Thanks for the efforts.

ps: Another unrelated problem but could provide clues is that when I click on
any URL (in an e-mail message or on a web page) the browser return 'Page
unavilable' - However when I refresh page is shown properly.

This was a great idea: as simple as effective - this did the job. Thank you
very much!

That's really strange ... but as:

R> The problem exists with TB, becky & Outlook and multiple pop servers.

it seems to be a general network congestion problem with your system
connected to the Internet via your broadband connection.

R> Using W2k (Prof) on a PIII with 128 MB RAM.

Some days ago somebody wrote something similar but he was using a 56k
modem. IIRC he also used W2K Pro. So it seems there's some option in
W2K that causes this behavior.

We need to break down as exactly as possible what's happening if your
mail download hangs.
What exactly does happen if you try to download a mail larger than
15k? does the download star and stops suddenly? Does it never really
start? As you're connected through broadband I guess the connetion
between you and the cable modem is done via Ethernet cable? If so,
does the light at your NIC stays flashing when download stops? does it
suddenly interrupt and nothing seems to happen? What if you try to
surf while downloading? Does this work or is there some general
network congestion/blocking?

At least you can try to get used with a packet sniffer like [1] ,
direct download URL [2]. You'll also need [3] or [4].

R> Any suggestions / pointers would be really welcome.

Pointers to download mails

2001-12-09 Thread Raj

Fellow TB users,

I had posted this query to TBUDl and was recommended to post here too.

The query may not be directly related to TB, however as there are experts in
this may be some one could be of assistance.

The problem is that I am on unable to download mails which are larger than 15k
using the broad band connection. I can download the same using dial up though.

The problem exists with TB, becky & Outlook and multiple pop servers.

Using W2k (Prof) on a PIII with 128 MB RAM.

Any suggestions / pointers would be really welcome.

Thanks in advance.
