Setting initials used in quoted reply

2002-06-29 Thread Perry Nelson

Hi TBTechsters,

I've been using The Bat! for about 9 months now and I monitor TBUDL
regularly. I am, of course, now a devoted fan.

I joined this list primarily to get some help fixing a consistent
problem I have when I receive email from people who use AOL. When I
reply to their messages, the initials used in the quoted reply are
unsatisfactory to me because they aren't the person's actual
initials but are, instead, a derivation of their email address.
Here is an example -- Hac. The person's handle on AOL is
Hypersteev, so I understand where the H comes from, but what is
the ac part. So far, I've been unable to figure how to specify,
with an AB template or anything else for that matter, what initials
will be used to preface quotes in the reply.

Is it possible to tell The Bat! what to use as initials in a quoted
  reply?

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

 Perry

Thanks, John, for solving that part of the mystery. After I posted
my message, I realized that I had reasoned that out before, but I
had forgotten my previous conclusion. What can I say? My
forgetter is more functional that my rememberer.

Now if only one of the wizards on this list can offer a solution. I
confess I'm worried that it isn't possible, though it would make
sense to have the ability to tell The Bat! to use the address book
  initials in the quoted reply.

ACM Yes. You can either give a fixed string or extract the initials
ACM from header information using the %Quotestyle macro.

ACM If the AOL messages only include the e-mail address and you have
ACM the persons e-mail address in your address book, you could
ACM generate their initials doing the following:

  specifics snipped

Thanks, Allie, for the thoroughness and detail of your reply. As
you'll see from my reply to Marck I've employed the simpler solution
of placing the initials I want to use in the Prefix field of the AB
and then using the %QUOTESTYLE==%ABtoNamePrefix option.

However, let me pose the same question to you that I asked Marck.
What advantages do you see to using Januk's Initial Extractor QTs?

Another advantage that I failed to mention is that it will limit the
number of letters in the initials to no more than 3.

Hi Allie,

PN QTs?

ACM It nicely generates the initials depending on the situation. Your
ACM initial macro will work only if you have the senders e-mail
ACM address in your address book. Januk's will work even when the
ACM senders address isn't in the address book. It will instead use
ACM the initials extracted from the name included with the From
ACM address.

  Thanks again for your reply.

I'm sure there'll be situations where I can use those QTs for
extracting initials to be used in various places in other macros.
You will remember, however, that my problem existed because there
was no name in the From address (although I failed to answer that
question from you in my previous reply). The Bat!'s default
template seems to work without intervention when the name exists in
the From address in the header.
