I'm really using Pegasus (and suffering from its almost
nonexistant 8-bit support), but if I preferred it to TB, I'd
probably unsubscribe from this mailing list, don't you think so?
I *need* decent support for complicated MIME structures like
MIME digests (I have heaps of these in my Pegasus mailbox),
and I would *love* to be able to transfer my folder system
together with filtering model to TB. These two are the main
reasons preventing my own switching from Pegasus to TB.

Okay, and here's my own listing of Pegasus major bugs for
those who're maybe considering switching to Pegasus (to make
them reconsider, probably). This list is the main reason for me
not to recommend switching from TB to Pegasus, _especially_
for multilingual users:

-The option "when the message is deleted, open the previous
message in the reader" causes triple GPF _always_;
-The text to the right of the reader right boundary cannot be
scrolled to (at all);
- Vertical scrollbars don't work as expected (everywhere; David
Harris says it's a Windows bug which I seriously doubt);
- Attaching another mailbox to list, switching to that mailbox's
user, then returning back results in your OWN mailbox
attached twice, and so on ad infinitum;
- The signatures in anything else then ISO-8859-1 cannot be
edited at all (they're then displayed in the wrong font); the same
applies to heaps of other places;
- The Unicode font scripts aren't understood: Pegasus
_always_ uses Western; hence to use other fonts you need to
manually add the corresponding definitions to Font Substitutes;
but even this fails when Pegasus is displaying HTML or
RichText messages --- regardless the font you've set up, these
will be _always_ displayed in Western, thus making Russian
ones unreadable at all;
- Identity attached to a folder doesn't work as expected: it
doesn't switch the "Custom heading line" to the attached
identitys one;
- Using Pegasus with HP-made printer drivers installed as
"default printer" is a pain; in a while causes system hang;
- Printing 8-bit-containing messages with the option "Auto-wrap
at right margin" doesn't work at all;
- USB printers can't be used at all;
- Printer spooler names with blanks aren't permitted;
- PGP encryption/signing strips out the signature provided that
either the message body or the signature contains 8-bit;
- You'll never be able to re-code the erratically encoded
messages without leaving Pegasus: it simply hasn't View--
Encoding functionality:-(;
- Something more that I don't remember:-)

  Nevertheless, I don't think Ethan gonna love Pegasus: it isn't
  intuitive at all, and a person that apparently can't even click on
  the "unsub" link attached to every message on this list is likely
  to get any kind of problem with the Flying Horse:-)) No personal
  offence, please!

 Who knows what his needs are anyway? Good luck to him. :)

He'll end up using OutGlitch, i believe:-)

Re[2]: unsubscribe

1999-12-05 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello Alexander all fellow TBUDL members,

Sunday, December 05, 1999, Alexander wrote in response to Ali's
comments regarding Alex's stated preferences on TUBDL for certain
function (primarily related to filtering), which he finds more useful
in Pegasus than in TB!:

Particularly during the 30 day evaluation period, when it's reasonable
to assume that many persons are evaluating more than one email client
(as I certainly did), it's equally reasonable to assume that many
persons will for one reason or another (related as much to their own
backgrounds, perceptions and abilities as to anything else), choose to
remain with a one that isn't TB!

During the long interchange that ensued regarding "Activating only
certain filters", it was evident to me that Alexander identifies with
TB and by contributing in such a clear and detailed way (as Ali
himself has so often done) to to the discussion on filtering, was
supporting both the ability of current registered users and those
evaluating TB to understand and get the best out of TB's actual
filtering mechanisms, but also to understand other possible (and
possibly preferable) filtering options that could certainly become
implemented on future versions of TB.

To that end, two of the responses that I made to Alex at the time were
bcc'd to TB's principle programmer, believing as I still do that the
criticisms were well founded and these issues are addressable and
hopefully will be in v. 2.

As for myself, I have downloaded no alternative email clients for
trial since registering TB and am more than willing to work within
TB's current limitations regarding filtering, which I have *not*
hardly used in the past with other email clients, preferring to see it
all in one place on arrival and manually separate it from there, since
while a filter may be effective regarding (say) a given subject or
source, it can not be so effective in terms of the weight, importance
or need for follow up given to a particular message by me at the
moment.

I have begun to use TBs filtering mechanisms and *do* feel that a real
need exists to be able to invoke filters manually *on an individual
basis* through what could be termed a filter manager, where all
filters created are available for selection. (And I would like to see
a similar "manager" available for selectively activating the ticker).

This goes beyond the folder level filtering used by Pegasus that Alex
described. Being able to color code messages (or flags) via a filter
(a la Pegasus) and/or manually (as in the flags of many others) is
another a useful option I for one would like to see implemented soon
in TB, along with the ability to edit received messages (which
sometimes arrive with absent or misleading subjects, for instance).

As for Pegasus, I know people that do use it heavily but my own
experience has not been positive, due to it's erratic behavior on my
old IBM Value Point and it's "less than intuitive" (as Alex described
it) user interface. For that reason, it's not even installed at the
moment.

While TB drives me up a tree momentarily now and then due to
inadvertent keystrokes activating unwanted functions, I am very much
at home with it's advanced composition features, good stability and
ability to download and send from multiple accounts simultaneously.

In the best of all *possible* worlds, an improved TB is certainly good
enough for me, and that goes for the support received from RITLabs and
of course TBUDL itself. (I say improved because some of this was
discussed with RITLabs prior to registering). Although I've been told
of other supposedly good email email clients, I continue to dedicate
time to assimilating TB's current features and commands, which
increases my appreciation of it and lessens my interest in the
temptations posed by supposedly greener grass on another side of the
fence.

Douglas

Auto-substitution of template

1999-12-05 Thread Jack LaRosa

Hello Bats!,

  I couldn't think of a better way to word the subject but here's what
  happens:

Mystery #1:
  With a folder highlighted, click on the CREATE A NEW MWSSAGE icon.
  The editor starts and you will be presented with the template you
  created for *that* folder (FOLDERPROPERTIESTEMPLATE). The
  cursor will be at the beginning of the TO field.

  TAB to CC, BCC, SUBJECT and once more to the main body of the as yet
  un-written message. It is at this point that TB! replaces the
  _folder_ template text with the _address book_ template text.

  I discovered this only when I inserted the %TO="" macro at the
  bottom of the folder template. Eliminate that macro from the
  template and the problem disappears.

  Is this a bug? Or more probably, what am I doing wrong?

Mystery #2:
  Again with a folder highlighted, click on the DOWN ARROW next to the
  CREATE A NEW MESSAGE icon to bring up your *favorites*. Click on any
  favorite other than that which belongs to the currently highlighted
  folder. The template which appears is the one which exists for the
  currently highlighted folder, not the *favorite* folder. Why?

Yes.

   TAB to CC, BCC, SUBJECT and once more to the main body of the as yet
   un-written message. It is at this point that TB! replaces the
   _folder_ template text with the _address book_ template text.

I assume that you've created a new message template for that recipient
through an address book entries properties and selecting the option to
use the address book template specifically for new messages to the
recipient. If so, then yes, what you described is what will happen.

   I discovered this only when I inserted the %TO="" macro at the
   bottom of the folder template. Eliminate that macro from the
   template and the problem disappears.

Using the macro is like selecting the address through the address
book, hence, you'll invoke the recipient specific new message
template.

   Is this a bug? Or more probably, what am I doing wrong?

IMHO, it's inconsistent. The To: macro should do things as you
describe below.

 Mystery #2:
   Again with a folder highlighted, click on the DOWN ARROW next to the

Now this is no mystery.:) This will occur if you have setup in your
address book, a specific new message template for the recipient
address that you chose.

What should really happen in your first 'mystery' scenario is that the
address book template should be displayed from the very start as it is
in the second 'mystery' scenario. :)

IMHO, each folder should have a toggle switch to suppress address book
specific templates. This should prevent your problem. Otherwise simply
go into the addressee's address book entry properties and deselect the
'use a specific template for new messages' option, whenever you wish
to use the folder templates and not the address book templates.

Shortcut keys wishlist

1999-12-05 Thread Roy Madden

Hi folks, I apologise but I have searched through the archive and
can't find the information I'm looking for. I'm currently using Forte
Agent for my email, which gives me everything I need (and more) but is
crippled because it cannot (and never will) support multiple accounts.
The Bat! seems to me to be the best alternative for the 'power user' ,
but there are a few things I would wish for before I could feel
comfortable switching

The actions I would use most often are (i.e. 95% of the time)
- Send and receive
- Jump to first unread
- Skip to next unread
- Mark all in current folder read and skip to next unread
- Keep/Park messages

Agent allows me to do most of those actions using single key strokes -
e.g. N next unread, S mark all read (and jumps to next unread), K for
keep/park. The bat doesn't seem to have that simplicity - I would love
to be able to hit one key to park a message, and jump to the next
unread marking all in present folder read. The right click and
alt-something combinations are doubling the amount of time it takes to
process mail.

Also, is there any way to turn off:
1. the addition of the reply number to replied messages (e.g. Re [3])
as it messes up threading in other mailers
2. The RM for replies and instead default to the more accepted
(though I can obviously see the reasoning behind the current system,
it does make replies harder to read on other programs)

Thanks!
Roy

I'm a previous user of Forte Agent for e-mail management so I can see
with a lot that you have to say.

The Bat! is quite different, but is extremely effective, and quite
ahead of Agent with respect to useful features for nicely managing
mail in an efficient manner. A lot of what I used to do manually in
Agent is automated in TB! mainly through the use of templates,
superior filtering and folder specific settings support. You just set
and forget.

 The actions I would use most often are (i.e. 95% of the time)
 - Send and receive

You can make this a fixed setting through Account | Properties |
Transport | 'Combined delivery (Send and Receive)'.

or

Clicking the arrow beside the 'Get New Mail' toolbar button and
selecting the desired option.

 - Jump to first unread

Ctrl+]

 - Skip to next unread

Ctrl+]

 - Mark all in current folder read and skip to next unread

Ctrl+M will mark all messages in the folder read but will not move you
to the next unread message in another folder. TB! does not support
navigating automatically across folders.

 - Keep/Park messages

Ctrl+J

 Agent allows me to do most of those actions using single key strokes -
 e.g. N next unread, S mark all read (and jumps to next unread), K for
 keep/park. The bat doesn't seem to have that simplicity - I would love

I know what you mean. :)

However, within the next month or so the first beta's of version 2 of
TB will be released and it will support configurable keyboard
shortcuts.

 Also, is there any way to turn off:
 1. the addition of the reply number to replied messages (e.g. Re [3])
 as it messes up threading in other mailers

Add the macro %SINGLERE to your reply templates. Place it at the
bottom of the template.

Many could, however, do with a global toggle switch for this.

1999-12-05 Thread Paula Ford

On Sunday, December 05, 1999, Alexander V. Kiselev wrote:

 I'm curious, what are the Bat developers hoping to add to TB in
 future versions?

 AFAIK, for version 2 the following things are planned (the first
 betas are expected somewhere around New Year):

Really? Public betas of 2? That would be nice. I thought it would be
several months yet.

 - fully configurable keyboard shortcuts and bitmaps (the latter
 is already available in the latest betas)
 - plugin development support
 - rewamped GUI with larger toolbar buttons

Larger?! They're already too large for me. The buttons are too large,
but the icons are small in relation to the size of the buttons.

 - morethanthat, there was an idea to add Rerl (at least,
 partially) to TB, maybe as a plugin, but I don't know will this be
 done or not. Anyhow, more scripting support is gonna be
 added this way or another.
 - enhanced filtering

I don't _know_ anything, but among things mentioned on the list as being
likely to be in or improved in version 2 are:

-IMAP
-shareable address books, separate address books for users, and,
 in general, address book improvements
-editor support for RTF, proportional fonts, etc.
-flagging/color-coding of messages

Do you know that any of these things will not be addressed in version 2?

One thing not discussed much, but that I would put near the top of my
list for version 2 is improvements to the Mail Dispatcher.

Oh ... and let's not forget, a new Help file. ;)
