I've encountered something else I don't understand in my own setup.
ALT-F2 should check all accounts for mail, but when I try either the key

matter if that account is the active account or not. I only have 2

Re[3]: SOT Linux port?

1999-12-11 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello Stanislav all other TBUDL members,

Stanislav, Paula and Mark have just written:

PF RIT Labs should drop everything to develop a Linux version

MA RIT should move in fast before someone beats them to it,

and

SP Well, but Delphi compiler for Linux is not released yet.

This is not an area of competence for me, but that's why I'm asking:

1).- Aside from the received demand, what would be the advantage to
using TB (and other applications) under Linux as distinct from under
say Windows 2000. As Linux becomes more of a finished product, the
costs associated with it seem to be rising commensurately. And while
windows was garbage from the start (I began with OS/2, myself), by
throwing enough money at it I'm told that NT at least has improved a
lot. Will Linux get beyond being a server OS and compete with Windoze
at the user level? (The Linux camp itself is split) and,

2).- If Languages like MetaWare High C/C++/ EC++ PwrPC Toolset Linux
and various versions of Fortran, as well as Cross Assemblers/Compilers
like METROWERKS CodeWarrior for Red Hat Linux GNU Edition and Graphics
Motif for Linux and all available, will the Delphi compiler make that
much of a difference? Or is the statement founded in TB's have been
programmed in Delphi?

As mentioned, my understanding of the issue is sketchy at best, and I
hoping you'll all (collectively) fill in the picture a bit.

Incidentally, while performance seems to be better with v 1.38e than
it was w/ 1.36, it's still buggier - and it's not just one thing. It's
demands on memory or greater and I need to close other programs
frequently, and sometimes it tries to do the same thing twice at once,
(i.e send the same message) then runs into itself and falls down
(closes). Also, when that just happened, on opening TB again - lo and
behold: NO messages in my TBUDL folder. *However*, little did the
bugger know (or maybe it did) that I had stashed in the computer I run
between my eyes, the idea to press shift-cntrl-alt right away (there
you have it - this list is indispensable). In any case, I'm sure these
issues are being worked on. (Nothing is gratuitous and improvements
must be implemented, tested and modified etc. The main thing is that
work is being done, continuously; and what's already in place helps me
get mine done, as is).

One more thing, on a totally different track. Are there any good
directories on the internet that provide data regarding the people
behind the email address? Meaning, can you obtain more detailed data
regarding the person using the email address, when that's all you
have? Thanks in advance for the answers.

Douglas

*I* liked it, personally, but almost the first thing I noticed about
it was that it wouldn't deal with Russian at all. Trashed it in a
couple of hours:-) As for the other features... Well, the
functionality is quite limited (in the same areas, where TB's
functionality is limited, too, like complex MIME structures), but it
was quite stable here and I noticed no serious bugs (OTOH
when I first launched TB, my own "bugs list" occupied about an

Just an interesting problem:-) and a pair of wishlist items.

1999-12-11 Thread Alexander V. Kiselev

Hello all,

I've played a bit with the regular expressions in TB, and... well,
if someone is interested, here's just an interesting task:

Assume you want to get rid of those funny
"XYZ" quotation marks (I really dislike these:-)). Well, if you
don't want to get rid of these, it doesn't really matter:-). At first I
thought it would be quite a simple task to do so using
%REGEXPTEXT and %REGEXPQUOTES macros, but... Well,
first things first: let's consider the simpliest possible case, the
message looking like:

some text...
some text...

XYZ some text...
XYZ some text...

XYZ some text...

So here we are, the task would be to construct the Reply
Template that would automatically get rid of "ZYZ" things,
replacing them with just "" or whatever. In Perl, this task is not
a task at all, for example, assuming that I have the message text
in the variable $kisa, I would write something like:

@words=$kisa =~/(?-sm).*\n/g;
print "@words\n";

or maybe I would have made the output operator look
somewhat different; anyhow, it doesn't matter:-) What matters
here is of course the first line which with the help of regular
expressions AND the /g modifier (which forces Perl to match
globally) does the whole dirty work... Naturally, this script might
be generalized for the general case when one deals with the
quotation marks of the form: "XYZVTN" etc., it's not a
problem to do so (maybe, couple of minutes at most)...

So at first I thought it would be just as simple as that to
implement somewhat similar in terms of TB regular expressions,
but... To begin with, TB doesn't allow one to match globally:-((
So, has anybody some idea how to do the trick without global
search?

If there exists no such possibility, here's a wishlist item #1:

1. Add the Global match modifier, please!

Note that the proposed functionality might prove to be quite
useful for a wide range of tasks. I could probably expand this
thought further and prove the point, but I'm leaving it up to you:-)

Now let's go further in our discussion of regular expressions
and what one might do with them:-)... Suppose I do something
with, say, %HEADERS string (i.e., manipulate it using regular
expressions). The most obvious task would be correcting that
odd TB's mistake when it puts the *localized* message creation
date as the result of %ODATE macro. It's of course quite
simple to do the trick, but then one would need to update each
and every template correspondingly. This would be greatly
simplified if one could *define* _new_ macros this way:

%MYODATE="(the sequence of templates defining the new
one)"

Apparently, currently one hasn't such functionality available. So
the wishlist item #2 is:

2. Implement the possibility to define new templates based on
the existing ones, please!

Obviously, these user-defined templates need to be system-
wide and there needs to be some place where their definitions
are to be stored (and edited by the user), for example, this
could be a new page in Account Preferences or any other:-)

**

Okay, this message proved to be rather long one, but anyhow,
what do you think?

Group 1: Die hard free (speech) and free (beer) software advocates.

Most likely not. They see supporting anything commercial in the slightest
as the work of Satan himself.

Group 2: Those that prefer Open Source software but will also pay for
commercial offerings if it fits their needs?

Chances are, yes. I mean, I'm all for Open Source software, I think it
actually makes a lot of fiscal sense. However, if there is a niche that Open
Source doesn't fit that commercial does, I have no problems paying for
software. My list includes:

Games (Windows is on my main machine for games)
Quicken98 (Soon to be Quicken2000 with PocketQuicken on the Palm)
The Bat!
Opera

Of course, my list of open source or freeware applications is much larger.
That is because the quality on the free side is there and I am more than
willing to use it since it keeps me legal.

Group 3: Those who buy Red Hat or Corel Linux, then buy other applications,
then buy support, then buy...

IE, the typical Windows user who has been brainwashed into thinking
everything worthwhile on a computer has to be paid for. I think that speaks
for itself.

Group 1 and Group 2 are about an equal size and there is potential there
for profit. Especially when you consider the fact that there is no decent
email client on Unix at present. I won't say they are powerful, since they
kick the crap out of TB! in that department. However, TB! (and PMMail) pack a
lot of power into the interface, which is something the unix programmers have,
thus far, ignored.

Group 3... Well, Group 3 is the one powering the Red Hat IPO and the
VALinux IPO. Group 3, if Linux really takes hold, is the one that will grow
quite large.

In addition to the normal left/right/scrollwheel buttons, two

According to the Penguinista, it is more stable, faster, etc. Afterall,
I don't think that anyone's ever disputed that UNIX has always been and
remains the better OS.

As Linux becomes more of a finished product, the costs associated
with it seem to be rising commensurately.

Which costs? You mean, to buy support from Red Hat etc.? In
all other spheres, there always exists a free application AFAIK.

I assume, Douglas, means for a company-supported or more user-friendly
version.

And while windows was garbage from the start (I began with OS/2,
myself), by throwing enough money at it I'm told that NT at least has
 improved a lot.

Well, there will be no more NT... It will be called win'2000, and
I'll bet they'll make it as buggy as each and every win':-)

NT5 is getting pretty good marks from 'independent' sources that I know.

Will Linux get beyond being a server OS and compete with Windoze at
the user level? (The Linux camp itself is split)

*I* personally don't think so, unless Corel Linux proves to be working
OS... They've released it finally a couple of days ago. But they
 charge for it...

*I* personally agree with you, Alexander. May we live long enough to eat
crow. But, there is obviously a significant market for a _small_
company, like RIT Labs. The Corel's FTP servers have been jammed since
they released the Linux OS and places like Buy.com sold out in a week.
Of course, Corel being Corel - and I'm a longtime user of the WP family
of software - they managed to frustrate alot of users when the
'user-friendly' installation program Corel designed crashed, because of
conflicts with some obscure video chips - like the S3 Virge and ATI
Rage. Duh. Typifying, though, Linux's obstacles to making any serious
inroads in the Windows market.

OTOH, I see some interesting signs of interest in Linux from some
interesting actors, the most recent and notable here being the federal
government. In a supported environment, everything could be moved to
Linux, if the office productivity applications are there. The pricing of
NT5 for the workplace - and MS backed off their first predatory pricing
scheme, but it revealed their thinking - is important in both the
government and small business sectors and could alone drive a move to
Linux.

In any case, if I were RIT Labs, I'd definitely be making plans for the
port ASAP.

Wow, Paula, that was clearly a typo on my part. Actually I ment
"macroses". I'd love to be able to define my _own_ macroses
based on the ones already available. Just a "dummie" example
(not useful at all, but...):

%MYDATE = "%DATEEN (St. Petersburg, Russia: GMT

This might come to be *pretty* useful if you start using the
regexp-based macros. Regular Expressions are fairly long, and
one can construct many useful things with their help, it would
be lofical to have some way to "group" them having given them

Ah ok, didn't think they did :)

So, we keep waiting while Borland is developing Delphi for Linux. They
promising to release it somewhere in q1 or q2 (don't remember exactly)
 of 2000.

Go Borland! Glad to see Linux is really starting to make an impact.
When this happens, I suspect most programs will only need a recompile
and perhaps a few small tweaks to work with Linux. This could be
good...

Obviously, these user-defined templates need to be system-
wide and there needs to be some place where their definitions
are to be stored (and edited by the user), for example, this
could be a new page in Account Preferences or any other:-)

I don't think I understand this one. You want to be able to modify all
or a selected group of templates at once? If so, we've discussed that
quite a bit in the past, but you seem to be saying something else.

I'm not sure either. System wide templates are already implemented in
the form of quick templates.

He may be referring to having to make the same change to templates in
multiple folders. One good example is the %SINGLERE macro. I had to go
through and apply it to all my reply templates one by one. I think
he's probably saying that one should have the option to make changes
to all templates of a particular type.

Filtering Parked messages

1999-12-11 Thread Ali Martin

Hi all,

I've noted something curious. If you apply filters to a folder and a
parked message meets the filtering criteria. The parked message is
copied to the destination folder and then parked. The original parked
message remains in the target folder. If you apply the filter again,
the parked message gets copied again and so on.

I realized this when trying to figure out why ten copies of a number
of parked messages were in a particular folder. I have been applying
manual filters to a folder containing a few parked messages and
copies are being sent to the destination folder each time I apply the
 filters.

This seems to be a bug to me.

kill filters inquiry

1999-12-11 Thread Jason Thompson

Hello Bat Buddies,

Kill Filters seem pretty simple to me, but what I noticed is that if I
drag and drop a filter from another category (ie. Incoming mail) then
certain numbers will appear in the signal strings.

For example, I've had a filter to automatically discard those odd error
messages from this mailing list (those that say "[EMAIL PROTECTED]
.COM is a private mailing list"). The filter was set up as follows in my
Incoming mail filters:

Source folder: Inbox
Move messages to: Trash
String: @THEBAT.DUTAINT.COM is a private mailing list
Location: Subject
Presence: Yes

In the signal string, I omitted "TBUDL" so it can catch these messages
from TBBETA as well. No problems. I drag drop this filter to the Kill
Filters, the signal string turns into:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] is a private mailing list

Where did that 20 come from? If I drag other filters with different
parameters into Kill Filters, different numbers come up. I suppose the
number represents an internal parameter used (and normally hidden) in
TB, but if so, how does it affect the functionality of this filter when
moved to Kill Filters?

The Help file doesn't seem to have any information on this. Can anyone
shed some light?

1999-12-11 Thread Aaron van Meerten

Hello TBUDL,

I've been running The Bat since 1.35, and since 1.36 have
experienced crashes every once in a while. This usually happens
when I am doing nothing, and then move my mouse to the NT taskbar.
I run The Bat to iconify in the taskbar, and when the taskbar
appears (I have it autohide), The Bat crashes. If I catch it in
time, I see an exception error message box, but most of the time it
is silent. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am
