Re: List rules (was: Re: Placing subjects in introductions)

Hi Marck,

 On Saturday, October 28, 2000 21:44:13 +0100 in
reference to "List rules (was: Re: Placing subjects in
introductions)" you write in response to my comment:

JR I believe that rules are *always* open to discussion in a
JR courteous constructive dialogue unless we are living in
JR something less than a democracy on this list.

Marck The list administration is not democratic, nor is it supposed to be.
Marck Syafril and I maintain the lists physically while Curtis, Wolfgang and
Marck I monitor it and attempt to keep the peace as well as participating.

Nor am I suggesting that an administration is
democratic; by definition, an administration *cannot*
be democratic. Its applesoranges. However I am
suggesting that the list should be thought of as a
democratic community which should always be able to
voice it's opinions ask questions on any subject as
long as it is "courteous constructive".

Marck Rules are the basis of all communities. The ground rules here are
Marck *not* up for discussion *or* for debate. They have been drawn up very
Marck carefully by the list moderators to ensure that this list does not
Marck become an anarchy.

There are a good many steps between asking a question,
making a statement anarchy. IMO your logic doesn't
track because you leap to your own conclusion without
supporting the argument but that's neither here nor
 there.

My point in responding here is to say that IMO your
language in msgs addressed to me was, remains,
un-necessarily aggressive for the circumstances. I'm
not challenging your administration; I am expressing an
 opinion.

Its not that rules shouldn't be enforced, it's the
style in which they are enforced. Things can be stated
in many different ways attain the same effect. Its
 just something to consider.

And at the end of the day, asking questions
expressing opinions can possibly impact a community in
a positive fashion -- administration all. In recent
history we've seen communities that erupted in
revolution anarchy because they were not permitted to
ask questions or express themselves publicly.

As an active member of several lists, as a moderator of
my own list(s) as a web master who has to deal with a
large number of inquiries on a regular basis, I know
there's a lot of work involved in these endeavors I
appreciate the work you all do.

I'm very grateful that the TB! list exists I've
enjoyed the camaraderie, good nature support of the
list. I expect that will continue because of the people
 who participate.

 Wishing you a nice day.

JR I believe that rules are *always* open to discussion in a

This is not very practical and can lead to unnecessary and long threads,
as this one for example, on the list. It's very important that the
membership realize that the list rules were not created to intimidate or
stifle participation. They were actually created to help nurture a
peaceful and productive atmosphere on this list, an atmosphere where
*everyone*, whether expert, newby, techy or otherwise may participate.
Some of the rules are not black and white ones and do require some
judgement on the part of the moderators.

These list rules were not pulled out of a hat but were carefully
constructed. A lot of them come from the RFC's that discuss e-mail and
usenet netiquette, netiquette guidelines that were formulated after many
years of experience using this media for exchanging messages. There's no
sense in reinventing the wheel and realising that, for example
'appropriately trimming text is the coureous thing to do'.

If every newcomer were to challenge the list rules, we would need a
separate list for just that. I'm quite happy to take any queries about
the reasoning behind some of the more seemingly unreasonable list rules,
but off-list with it .Please! Let's get on with discussing The Bat!.

[OT] Relliable backup tape system

2000-10-29 Thread ztrader

I have a pair of 8 Gig HP Colorado tape drives that I've used for some
time. One has quit entirely, and the other is getting quite
unreliable. HP suggests 'discarding them' - can't be fixed.

I have about 12 Gigs on the computer with the tape drive, and about 20
Gigs on the local net. I'd appreciate any suggestions for a 20-30 Gig
tape drive and good backup software.

Don't want to clutter the list - please reply direct (unless you have
a super solution all would like to hear :-).

TIA,

Annoyances

2000-10-29 Thread MartianRover KF6KNC

Hi Bat! Listers,

There are a couple things that bug me about the Bat!, and they are
items that might be fixable, so I'm writing to ask.
The first is the expansion of addresses while typing the name or
nick name of the address you want. Sometimes it works, sometimes
it doesn't. I haven't figured out why. The other thing is, if I
tab to the next field before it expands, it doesn't expand it. Is
there anyway around that?

My second question. Is there anyway I can change the headings for
my emails. I'm talking about the headings like "From", "To",
"Subject", these heading. I want to rearrange them, and remove
some of them. Can I do that?

The last thing. When I use the menu item to add a new email
address to my address book, it always goes into the Bigfoot
directory, not my personal one. Why is that?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, but I'm not fully familiar with it. As a result, I'll let others
tackle this question.

You can change which ones are displayed by checking them under the
View menu item. But the order in which they are displayed is
currently not user definable.

The last thing. When I use the menu item to add a new email
address to my address book, it always goes into the Bigfoot

Under the address book properties for your personal address book,
select, "Use this book for ADD/DELETE operations"

MK it doesn't. I haven't figured out why. The other thing is, if I
MK tab to the next field before it expands, it doesn't expand it. Is
MK there anyway around that?

There are three ways in which TB will expand addresses typed into the
address fields.

1) Type a partial address and wait.

This doesn't appear to always work. This is because the source of
addresses for this "auto-complete" method is the address history
list (the list that drops down when you press the down arrow next
to the "To" header field). Of course, since that is the source, it
will only draw on matches that exist within that list. That makes
it a match on the most recently used 20 addresses only.

2) Type a partial nickname and tab out of the field

This will draw a match on the first matching nickname in the
address book. This method only matches when you leave the header
   field.

3) Type a partial name and use Ctrl-Plus to select consecutive
matching entries from the Address book.

This is the method I always use. It is, on the whole, safer. I find
that method 1 and 2 can pull an unexpected address that looks
almost right enough to fool a "user in a hurry" g.

Januk has answered your other questions admirably :-).

It has

My configuration:

Card ( latest drivers ), SB 16 Sound Card ( latest drivers ).

The scenario: I load The Bat ( 1.47 - Halloween - registered ), then I load Net
Captor browser ( or IE 5.0, the same thing ), and as soon as I click on any kind
of "mailto" button or a hyper link on some / any site, my PC crashes giving me
the blue screen saying something like " Kernel caused the fault in ...Kernel32."
Nothing helps but rebooting from the reset knob, Ctrl+Alt+Del wouldn't work.

This same thing happened with the two previous versions of The Bat sa well.

_But_ , this crash happens only if The Bat is already running when I click on
these links. When it's not around, the clicking loads The Bat , minimizes it's
main window ( without ever actualy showing it ), then the "Edit Mail Message"
shows up in the tray, also minimized. Clicking on it pops up the normal window
of a new mail.

I've tried changing the default mail client in the IE and made Outlook Express
be the one lounched, no problems even if I had it running while clicking o the
mailto link.

I'm stuck. Help appreciated :-)

Another Meta Character ? different Subject.

2000-10-29 Thread Dean

Hello ,

I finally have the Meta Character set up and working, very nice and a
  big thanks.

I did purchase the book you referred to A.Curtis Martin, however
until the book arrives I was wondering if you might feel like taking
  another question on.

On some of my other list and or my newbie friends from AOL, they like
to forward messages until the message is lost in a see of "" is
there a way to use one of your formulas to delete all but one of
  those in a reply message?

I will understand if your not interested in picking this one up:)

That would involve a search and replace operation that I could do in
seconds with TextPad (in fact I created macro in TextPad to do just
that) or NoteTabPro, both of which support regex's. All we have been
doing with these regex macros so far is extracting matching text strings
from text variables. Removing the excess quote prefixes and leaving just
one is more involved and scripting would have to be involved.

D I will understand if your not interested in picking this one up:)

I'm willing to take the challenge since it improves my regex crafting
skills but, AFAICS, this one seems to be out of the scope of TB!.

A Question about Distribution Lists

2000-10-29 Thread Benito Carral

Hello,

I would like to send a message to a list and that when a
person read it, he/she doens't read in the "TO" field each one of the
addresses of my list, just something like "My Friends" or similar. I
know how to do this with Pegasus Mail but I have not found the way to
do it with TB!.

Thank you very much for your time and Help.

2000-10-29 Thread Januk Aggarwal

Hello Dean,

On Sun, 29 Oct 2000 at 19:53:06 GMT -0600 (which was 5:53 PM
where I live) witnesses say Dean typed:

   those in a reply message?

As Curtis said, regular expressions in TB won't work. There is a bit
of a work around for one case of those types of messages. Suppose you
get a message like the following:

Hello
World
What's up?

Notice that the first 6 columns are just used up by the quote
prefixes. Also notice in your message editor's status bar there is
one field that says STREAM. Right click on it and change it to
COLUMN. Now you can select the first 5 columns and delete just those
characters. So if you do that, one click of the delete key brings the
above quote to:

 Hello
 World
 What's up?

Now you will need to fix up the rest of this manually. This doesn't
completely do what you need, but it is a little easier than doing one
line at a time.

Hope this helps.

Printing Templates Article from silverstone.com

2000-10-29 Thread Michael S. Greenbaum

I found the excellent article by A. Curtis Martin on templates at
http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/templates.html and tried to print
it out.

However, the right side of the document does not print completely
because, apparently, the lines are too long. Every line is cut off
by about 40-50 characters. I'm printing from Netscape 4.75 and my
print setup has my right and left margins set at 0.25, the smallest I can
for my HP 4P printer.

I don't normally have problems printing from web pages.

Any suggestions as to how I can print this document and get all the
lines printed completely?

Thanks.

Registration Sale

2000-10-29 Thread Michael S. Greenbaum

I just registered my copy of The Bat! on my 29th day.

Someone should tell those who have not registered, unless it's already
been brought up here, that there is a Halloween registration sale in
progress. Prices are cheaper for registration and there is a discount
available for 2.x when it is released.

I would not have known about it had I not gone to the site since the
sale prices are not in the registration document on your computer.

The sale prices may only be good through October 30th--I can't quite
tell from the site!

Check out http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/register.html

I don't think you'll like this suggestion, but about all you can do is
switch to Internet Explorer (I don't know about Opera). The
limitation you're noticing with Netscape is the primary reason why I
switched to Explorer. That and a few configuration things.

For some reason Netscape wants to print everything the size of your
screen, and not the size of the paper. But IE re-renders the page with
the maximum window width being the size of your paper. So on paper,
you see what you'd see on your screen if the browser window was
8"x10.5".

I suppose you can try adjusting the Netscape window width and see if
that affects the printing. I don't think it will, but it's probably
worth a shot if you don't have IE already installed.

Good luck.

You're right again, of course. I have IE loaded but never use it (I
never use anything of Microsoft's if I don't have to). So I opened it,
got the article, printed it, and closed IE.

The article printed with no problem.

Thanks again.

It's not possible to load *only* requested language(s), but there
is a very small utility (about 30kB), which allows you to manipulate
in LNG file. It is called "LNGUtil" and you can download it from:
  http://www.mml.nsi.ru/~alovetski/ (this is the author's site -

In case of any troubles in downloading or finding this utility, I can
