Check with the Company/Person where you registered TB!. If your lucky
he stored your PW in his DB.

I'm not sure, but I think that *all* registered user Info are
Forwarded to Ritlabs. So you also could check with them. But what ever
way you need also to submit proofs that you have registered.

Re: gifs

2001-12-05 Thread Sergiy Merlyan

Hello Ian,

On Wednesday, December 05, 2001, at 11:37, GMT -05
you wrote about "gifs", at least in part:

IC>Is there a way to embed a gif file within the body of a message?

You can send gif in the message body (not as attached file) in a somewhat
tricky way.
You should UU (Base64)-encode that gif (there are many third party
programs to do that) and put contents of the encoded file directly to the
message body. Your recipient should then accomplish reverse operation: put
contents of the message body (not all, but encoded gif only) to a file and
decode it back to gif.

Marck D Pearlstone wrote:

The point is, many people do NOT get used to it because that behaviour
is so unusual, so unlike everything we are used to. In fact I think
that TB's editor is one of its weaknesses. It can't even use
proportional fonts...

> It's what enables TB to do columns, justification and general text
> orientated formatting. It is known as the free caret /

You don't need a free caret to do simple columns or justifications.
How about the Tab key or the spacebar? Besides, since most people have
e-mail clients that use proportional fonts (OE, Eudora, etc.), and
won't bother to change the font to view your fancy creation, these
nicely aligned tables will, in 99% of all cases, look like a big flop
to the recipient. The creation of tables and fancy text formatting in
an e-mail is futile. When I want to send a document with tables I
create it in Word and attach it.

I understand that the outdated free caret concept has its fans, but at
least TB should give a choice instead of forcing it upon users who
don't want it and don't need it.

Another very weak point of the editor is its autoformatting feature.
It FORCES you to insert a line between paragraphs, which is ridiculous
and drives one crazy when one types, for instance, an address, or a
list of items that should not be separated ny a blank line. It's a
typical example of a useful feature that is badly implemented. And if
one doesn't use that feature, one has to use Alt-L extensively because
the text doesn't reflow naturally. It's as tedious as it can get.

That editor is a shocker. If TB didn't have many other redeeming
features that make it overall the best tool on the market, it would be
enough to make me look for something else. I can only hope that future
versions of TB (for instance v.2 which is said to be planned for the
third millennium) will have an optional free caret, proportional fonts
and a decent autoformatting feature that will let the user view and
compose text the way HE wants. Is it too much to ask?

Cheers,
Rémi Pach

I just had to reinstall windows on my machine along with TheBat, and now it needs to be registered again..

But this doesn't work if Andrew want's to change the TO: field.

I'm often in the need of re-sending a eMail. This is what I do:
I go to the 'send' folder and place the cursor on the eMail/ctrl+c
to Copy it - after a few seconds a small window appears where I can
select the folder to-copy-to/I select 'outbox' - return/got to
'outbox' double click on the copied eMail/now you can change
anything as you like including the TO:

  *** attention ***
There is a small danger in doing so. When the eMail is copied to the
outbox this eMail is **ready to send**. Assuming the moment you have
copied the eMail and this account is checked for new eMails and in
your account properties you have selected 'combined delivery
(send+receive)' then this eMail is send instantly without changes.

In fact, this would be a suggestion to Ritlabs: when copying a eMail
from Send to Outbox it should be placed in *saved* mode.

You get that when someone already is entered in the address book with
that nickname. I believe the nicknames(handles) have to be unique. You
can have duplicate first and last names but you can't have more
than one nickname the same ( I think :). This can become a headache
when importing from a file or program that lets you have duplicate
nicknames. If you are importing make sure you don't bother to import
the nickname field or else change the names to be unique.

I'm a newbie so I could be wrong about all of the above.

You are - to my knowledge - correct. But ... I remember faintly I had
some trouble with the German help file - I couldn't get it to work
properly. So I discarded it and went back to the then not up-to-date
English file.

As I wrote, I don't use the menu very often to get to help, but I
think once or twice I was able to. I am quite sure because otherwise I
would have asked for directions before.

What I need is either the place where I have to change the setting fot
the help file (I don't have any files connected to the German help
anymore) or a confirmation that it really is an beta issue.

There isn't. Once you get used to it, you wouldn't want it any other
way either. It's what enables TB to do columns, justification and
general text orientated formatting. It is known as the free caret /
virtual space interface and is perfectly "normal" for text formatting
editors.

Editing/Composing Messages

2001-12-05 Thread E Major

In The Bat, when you are editing or composing a message, and you go to the end
of the line, and press the right arrow, it will not go down to the next line,
but keep moving the cursor off into space to the right, or up and down if you use
those arrow keys.

Is there any way to make it act like "normal" programs, like notepad or
somethng? ie to only let the cursor go where there is text?

Thanks guys. The Bat is cool!

I don't think so. As I wrote - and Thomas confirms in this thread - I
once had a try at the German language file but discarded it after
setting TB! back to use the English one.

What I now need is the place where I can check/change the setting.

If it turns out to be a beta issue we can easily change this topic
over to the right list.

Type the name of the quick template and press right after

Re: Replacing Outlook

2001-12-05 Thread Joseph N.

Lotus Organizer is now in version 6. It's far more capable than 2.x.
I have version 5, and it not only allows for very extensive recurrence
templates but also allows customization by setting specific dates. The
alarm will go off after the even, but only when Organizer is started.
For something that would work without the program itself being on, you
probably need to use something as complex as Lotus Notes, which has a
Minder feature that would alert you to mail and calendar items even if
Notes is not started.

Zoot is an incredibly rich information processor with PIM capabilities
that probably would also fit the bill, but I use Organizer (ver. 5) as
my PIM, so can't really comment on Zoot's capabilities there.

Hi Hendrik,

I tried that, but there are problems in that over half the contact
records became corrupted and/or split over two to four physical
records with no apparent logic to what appeared in the fields.

FWIW, I suspect that this is because some records have copious notes
that include quotations and commas -- and that's enough to throw the
translation into disarray. I also tried tab delimiting, but had
similar problems with that route.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Hi there!
The easiest way in my eyes is to export the Outlook addressbook to a comma

Outlook PST files are a law unto themselves. However, I nearly have a
solution:

1. If you open the Outlook Address Book, you can select all the
contacts in one folder, right-click and choose Copy to Personal
Folder. That copies the records to a .PAB file, which Outlook Express
can partially understand.

2. You can then start Outlook Express and choose to import from the
Personal Address book that is associated with my Outlook profile.

3. Outlook Express 5.5 has an option to export the information to a
Windows Address Book.

4. You can use WAB2LDIF to convert the Windows Address Book to
something that TB can understand.

Unfortunately, Outlook Express has a bug in its import from PAB
routine -- it doesn't import the snail-mail addresses, notes, or
telephone numbers. So, this information never makes it to the WAB
file. Since most of my listed contacts have telephone numbers,
addresses, etc., for me, this route is less useful than doing the
transfer with individual vCards. However, anyone who is replacing
Outlook with TB and who only wants names and email addresses in their
TB address book should find the above process useful.

Now, if only I can find some way of getting OE5.5 to import the
telephone numbers etc...

NACK.
Tried it with current Beta plus 1.53t (older version not available at
the moment) and everything works as expected.

P.S.: I'd really appreciate if you'd not use personal observations
terms as Marck you already pleased because some of us non-native
english speaking people may have problems to distinguish between an
offence and something non personal from common speech. I just had this
trouble in your last mail. Thank you very much.

You can use utility from The Bat! programmers called WAB2LDIF. It loads
WAB (Windows Address Book) files and can export them to LDIF format, which
can be imported to TB without problems. You can download it from here for
example:

ftp://ftp.gin.cz/pub/mswindows/the_bat/utilities/wab2ldif.exe (200 kB)

Thanks for the information. However, the contact information is in
Outlook Personal Folders (PST) files, not in the Windows Address Book.
I have no way of getting this information to a Windows Address Book or
any other *bulk* form that TB can import.

Looks like I'll have to do this one vCard at a time :-(

Click on a folder with the right button and go to folder properties there is
an option called 'Use account default column settings'. This will link in
all the folders chosen to the same settings.

The 'Use the account default column settings' is somehow recursive *g*
Every folder with this option checked part this settings _and_ is able
to alter them. Check it for all folders you want to have the same
settings in and change column settings in one of this folders. All
other folders bind on that option will participate :-) Change one,
change all :-) There's no special preferences setting to define
'default column settings' it's done in any folder that uses it :-)

OK, so it is not TB! ... Sorry, but that's good news *g*
Nevertheless ... AS it act's as a gateway to other clients have you
tried sending a mail from one of the client using your computer as
gateway? Does the same limitation apply on connections established by
a client in your LAN?
An other thing you can try out is uploading a e.g. 10K file via FTP to
any server. Is this restricted by this mysterious limitation too?

The last thing I'm able to suggest is using a network sniffer.

At [1] you are able to find the windows port of a great graphical tool
called 'Ethereal'. The download site for windows binaries is [2], the
direct download URL is [3]. You'll need pcap-drivers too, they're
located here: [4], direct download URL is [5]. If you're done with
installing and reboot start Ethereal, start a capturing and tell
The Bat! to send a mail smaller than 1.4K. Save the captured data.
Start a new capturing and tell The Bat! to send a mail bigger than
1.4K. Save this data too. Try to find out what's happening with the
connection by analyzing the saved data and comparing them. A usefull
function in Ethereal is "Tools" / "Follow TCP Stream", this outputs
nearly clear text.

If you can't find anything we'll need to find a way how you can send
this data to me (if you don't mind me having a look at them :-]).

Of course there's still the possibility to re-install W2K from scratch
if you think it's not worth the effort you'll have to do with
Ethereal, but I've no idea what setting in your W2K is causing your
trouble, so chances are there you'll getting the same problem again
after a fresh installation.
