When threading by reference, which TB does beautifully and specially in
this list where everybody uses TB, quoting shouldn't be necessary at
all. I am subscribed to a number of newsgroups where most posters don't
quote anything at all. After all, that's what threading was invented
for, or wasn't it? :-)

Well, not really. It made me feel stupid when I first tried to do
something with it, and still does some times :-)

AltGr is a button which is found on European keyboards where you'd find
one of the Alt buttons on North American keyboards. It acts as a second

Because I would highlight the first account I want to check, then use
ctrl-click to highlight the other accounts I want to check, then press
F2 to check the highlighted accounts :-)

Just as, for example, I can highlight multiple files in Windows Explorer
& press Copy, or Cut, or Delete, or whatever...the action is applied to
all the highlighted files, while leaving the non-highlighted files
alone. I'd like to do the same kind of thing in TB to check multiple
accounts. I'm not looking for a feature to check certain accounts at
certain times or anything like that - just a way to check *some*
accounts without checking *all* accounts, & without checking each
account individually.

When I tab through the dialog, the buttons are highlighted in a
different order than they appear visually.

I don't run the current beta, but there is a chance they have fixed
this, and each tabbing now takes you to the next botton, which is
correct.

My Chinese keyboard works like a US keyboard when I switch the OS to
English. I, too, read that crtl-alt should imitate AltGR, but it
doesn't. My only way to produce the euro symbol is by using alt-0128
(NumPad).

As for a list of codes (like 0128 for the euro symbol), apart from the
charset application in Windows (Start / Run / charset), I have an
ASCII table printed out and taped to the wall near my screen. I use it
for German umlauts as well.

I am no expert in this, so if I am wrong anywhere, I hope someone
jumps in to correct me.

The log entries are found in TB logs when using either "Regular"
connection and SMTP authentication or "Secure to Regular Port"
(STARTTLS) connection and SMTP Authentication. You should not have to
resend the mail; it should still be delivered to the server.

There was some discussion a while back (and hopefully someone will
jump in with some info here) where TB was trying to authenticate
before STARTTLS and that was creating an error. I thought I saw where
it was supposed to be fixed in a new release. I didn't really pay
much attention because I use TLS exclusively.

I tested it on my machine and I get the same log entries as you do
when using either of the above combinations. The error does not
require that I resend the mail. I did capture the packets, but it does
not seem to me that TB is sending a plain authentication. Of course, I
have been known to be wrong.

If I use "Regular" connection, I don't get the error when MD5 is
available. I can't test "Secure to Regular Port" with MD5 because I
don't have access to a server that does that.

Sorry I can't tell you more, but this is about the extent of my
knowledge.

A packet sniffer (protocol analyzer) would get you the data you want
to see. There are many of them out there. I use a couple of
commercial ones, but Ethereal is one of the best and is free.

Nope, not a single one -- there could theoretically be a conflict

I can try to label them with the screen reader -- the buttons in the

same way meaning they don't speak their function when selected with
the screen reader. In that case, I pressed them, one by one, to try

I've had this problem too. I've noticed that it occurs when I give
focus to the connection centre just as it finishes checking for mail.
It's never happened when I let it run minimised. Of course, it doesn't

..OTOH, I get a similar problem with 1.62r. When

Have you ever considered Client/Server feature of TB?

The Bat! can act as a standalone e-mail client with your TCP/IP
connection; as a non-TCP/IP client to a server on your LAN; and as a
server to clients on the network.

This feature is very useful when you work with a distributed messages
database - server downloads your messages at one place in your network
and all of you guys will work in client to server mode and will be
able to control mail much better than using a POP server.

An easy way to type € is great for me, as I have clients all over the

I almost never use the right Alt key as the left one is much easier to

Hello, Alexander, all:

I believe I've sent some log extracts to the list recently, so won't
do that again today. But I've not had this experience where a message
is first rejected and then accepted. I appreciate your analysis.

The best thing now I expect is that we find a way to make this
information available to future Batters with SMTP issues who may
follow in our footsteps, our prop wash, this contrail.

Fellow Batters, does one best do that? I sometimes wonder if a blog
would be a good intermediate step, at least.

Hmmm. Thats what I was suspecting. I have the feeling that TB is not as
"fault tolerant" for misbehaving SMTP-servers, or something. Here's what
happens to me *every* time...

 25.07.2003, 12:12:18: SEND - connection finished - 1 messages sent

The message is sent, but only after an initial error. It would be
interesting to see what the server actually "says", but I don't know how to
intercept the command/reply exchange.

Windows has a tool for that. Not very comfortable because searching is a
manual task, but you can show all charsets in all possible encodings, and
it will show you the ALT+x combinations.

On WinNT/2k/XP it should be

 %SystemRoot%\System32\charmap.exe

Hasn't someone mentioned that a future version will have "combined"
threading, that is, by both references and subject? (Mutt does that, very
lovely).

I'd also like to have a *comfortable* ;-) way of manually adding mails to
existing threads (I've seen mailers, especially web-frontends, that really
screw things up a lot, not only killing any references but also mangling
the subject so badly threading by subject fails, too).

Just like other characters, the euro symbol is only available when the
font includes it. All the Windows "main" fonts (arial, TNR, etc.) now
have euro symbols, but you may need to update the fonts on your system
to get that symbol. IIRC, you can get the update fonts from the Windows
Update site.

That said, I didn't tell the full story. AltGr+4 gives the euro symbol
on my machine, but some need AltGr+e or another combination. The full
story can be found at:

I believe that depends on at least three different things: the keyboard
layout, the used font, and the encoding.

For example, the mentioned "Courier New" charset in "Windows/Western"
encoding has the Euro symbol at offset 0x80 (hex). You can get the
character by pressing (and holding) ALT, then typing (on the numeric pad,
thats important) "0128".

However, both the DOS/USA and DOS/Western encoding of the same charset
don't have the Euro symbol at that offset. But - and I think thats one of
the rare benefits of Windows :) you can still reach it with ALT+0128.
