Good luck with the archives. They are a very poor substitute for
proper documentation. It may be that TB! will never be fully
documented in understandable English (and other languages).

Program offerings that allow documentation to slide for years are more
likely to (eventually) appeal mostly to their beta testers and small
numbers of other curious souls who don't mind spending more time
trying to understand the program than in using it.

Just my opinion.

This is one of the many perils of folder level templates. For more
information about them see:
"http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/templates.html#template woes"
Remove the quotes before trying to access this URL.

NOTE to owner of the above URL:
Spaces are not allowed in (X)HTML anchors.

Since you haven't changed anything in the body of the e-mail message
but you have changed the headers, The Bat! reevaluates the template so
that automatic salutations, etc. are automatically updated.

One thing I forgot to post: one of the big advantages of using IMAP is
the ability to send a message (business mail) remotely and then synch
the Sent folder when I return to the office.

My workaround at the moment is setting up an e-mail alias (sent@) that
gets sorted to my Sent folder on my desktop. When I use my business
account on the road, I Bcc the sent@ address with new/reply templates.

Not ideal, but it works.

So anyone want to weigh in on the pros and cons of IMAP and POP3?

Template addressing problem

2004-01-08 Thread Munango-Keewati

I've just verified a problem with template addressing. If I start a
new message while in my tbudl folder, the message template contains:

%TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

as the last line of the template,so the new message is addressed to
this list. Discovering that (once again) I've forgotten to go to the
inbox (and a different template) before beginning a new message, I
then delete the tbudl address from the To: line and enter the correct
address for the message. When I look back later (or mail the message)
I discover that the tbudl address has returned and the message now has
two recipients.

Is this a bug? What's going on here?

Thanks in advance.

This type of Spam is aimed primarily at MS Outlook Express users
(i.e. the large majority of Internet users). Outlook Express uses
the MS Internet Explorer HTML rendering engine to automagically

It will happen on every list you where end up with this as an

[EMAIL PROTECTED] on listname <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

It's a very bad violation of the RFCs.

It happened to someone else recently on the SecureBat list.

No list server in its right mind should accept a message addressed
like that! If other lists accept your postings then I would assume
that those messages aren't being given completely RFC invalid

IMAP, Crackle, POP

2004-01-08 Thread ken green
I seem to find quite a bit of information about IMAP to be inconsistent.
It also seems that most of the e-mail clients that I have tried,
implement IMAP rather crudely (ranging from a few quirks to LOTS of
problems).

What I am wondering is: do I need IMAP?

My ISP offers both POP3 and IMAP services. For a long time I only used
POP3 - that was all I knew outside of using Outlook with an Exchange
Server. When I started asking about IMAP and its usefullness, the
answers I got varied. I had heard that I *should* access my mail with
one or the other - that is, if I am accessing a mailbox from more than
one machine, they should all be accessing via POP or all using IMAP -
not mixed access. I had also heard that as long as I used POP3 on my
main computer, and used IMAP for remote access (laptop, etc.) I would be
OK.

IIRC, I did some testing with using POP on one computer and IMAP on
another, and had some problems with duplicate messages and read flags
getting set correctly. Whether these problems were due to the particular
mail client (and its implementation of IMAP) or due to the issue of
accessing mail via two different protocols, I don't know.

What I do know is what I want:
1. I want to have my desktop as my main computer. I want to download,
   organize and store mail there.
2. I want to be able to access all of my mail from anywhere, and
3. have the ability to reply from my business account even if I'm using dial-up.
4. I would like to be able to occasionally download mail on my laptop
for offline reading/processing, while still leaving a copy on the server
so when I return to my desk it will can be downloaded there.
5. I would like for this to be simple

Obviously #1 shouldn't be a problem. #2 is fine using a web-based mail
interface. (Actually, web-based mail seems to be the best handler of
IMAP I've seen so far - I use Horde's IMP and it works pretty well.) The
problem with web-based access is that I must stay online to go through
multiple messages, which can be a big deal sometimes. The positive of
using web-based mail for remote access is that I can accomplish #2 and
#3 with ease. The negative is not being able to do #4, and also not
having a very good address book.

I realize that #3 is mostly an ISP issue.

I have tried using Mail Dispatcher in The Bat, and this seems like it
would work - set to always use Dispatcher on my laptop,
downloading/saving mail when needed, leave a copy on the server. I like
using Message Dispatcher when travelling. I think I ended up missing
some messages when I tried downloading mail at my desk using IMAP - the
read flags were causing The Bat to *not* download messages I wanted to
download - I realize that's the way IMAP is supposed to work ;) But is
there a better way?

I tried out Becky e-mail, and that product has an excellent IMAP
interface that allows me to read/process messages on the server as well
as download mail when needed. (I tried out PocoMail, too, and will post
my review of that later.) Becky may be a solution for mobile use, but it
lacks some features I want in my main e-mail client - and really, I just
want to use one e-mail client.

So, back to my first questions... Is it *bad* to access a mailbox using
different protocols from different access points? What are the issues
that should concern me? Should I use POP3 at my desk/main computer and
IMAP everywhere else? What are the pros/cons of that?

Oh yeah - one more thing... Because I use a filter on one account that
re-directs messages to my cell phone, I keep TB on my desk computer
running while I'm gone during the day. So I need the ability to have the
desk computer regularly hitting the server, and still be able to access
mail away from the desk.

Looks like 4 scenarios:

POP3 at my desk and IMAP remotely
POP3 at my desk and POP3/IMAP remotely (POP3 on laptop, IMAP if without
   laptop and using web interface)
IMAP at my desk and IMAP remotely
IMAP at my desk and POP3/IMAP remotely

I'm sure I've over-thought this issue to death. Despite IMAP's supposed
advantages, I'm completely willing to use POP3 exclusively if it
simplifies things and I can do what I want.

I realize that this post isn't too Bat-centric, but I finally downloaded
and installed the Christmas Edition on my laptop. So far, it looks
pretty cool, but posts here indicate IMAP is still very problematic.
However, to me (and from what I understand about the IMAP protocol), it
seems like TB is on the right track with IMAP. The way IMAP accounts are
set up now makes more sense. It *shouldn't* be something as simple as a
dropdown selecting POP or IMAP.

Anyway, long post, I know. I would really appreciate anyone's comments,
help, advice, etc.

Thanks.

do the plug-in grab the info, and how do it forwards it after processing?
Are there any standard procedures one can use in Visual Basic for example?
  I know Visual Basic pretty...erm...alright... If I wanted to do a plug-in
for The Bat, what do I need to learn about? I do not know API - am I
  stranded?

Absolutely minimum effort now. I put Andre's line in my Reply
templates, including Account, tbudl and other TB! mailing lists, and
TF's personal mail address, along with the others--less than a
hundred--in my addressbook--so it took about 3 minutes time.

This reply automatically went to the account that's able to send. :)
Thanks to Andre's little addition, that is:

I'm showing that again, in case anyone else should ever run into my
particular problem and be searching the Archives for help. :)

As to Spam, I fear that like the Poor in the New Testament, it will
always be with us. :) However, I find only two or three in each
hundred messages that the Mail Dispatcher lists.

I've been pretty prudent about where I put my e-mail address, ever
since it got harvested last year and about 10,000 Spam an hour were
being bounced back to my machine! Never again, one hopes!!

These kinds of plugin are in the moment available.

Anti-Spam Plugin

The problem of developing new plugin is limited because of the not well

Usually these messages have a nonsensical plain-text parts and the
real spam is in the HTML part. If your default setting is to view
HTML, in TB or any other mailer, you will see the spam. The one you

It's a good scheme. I just use an AB group scheme myself. I have a
single filter that adds the individual to the Exempt group as it
sends the OOO with the advanced setting condition that the address
is not already in the Exempt group. By seeding the group with the
address of the lists I belong to, it all just works.

They're actually easier than that...

Hold down ALT while selecting text with the mouse for Column
Hold down CTRL while selecting text with the mouse for Line
Hold down SHFT while selecting text with the mouse for Stream

These are sticky too, so once you do one of them, you'll have to do
one of the others to change back.

I'm thinking of trying to implement this in TB! using filters.

First off, has anyone done this? I'm not so bored that I want to
reinvent the wheel.

If I do have a bash at this I was thinking of something along the
lines of this.

  1. I only want to send out the OOO message once to each person that
mails me, regardless of how many messages they send.

  2. I will create a filter that puts each incoming message in to a
particular colour group the show it needs OOO processing.

  3. For each 'named' AB group, if the sender's name is found then I will
change the message's colour group to say that it has been
  processed.

  4. If I do not find the sender's address then an OOO message will be
sent and the colour group changed.

  5. When I switch off the filter I will empty the OOO AB group.

The idea behind 2 is that I can have more than one AB group which
means that I can have a list of addresses that never get an OOO
message, mail lists and the like. I can switch the OOO filter on and
off just by enabling the filter in (1) because if they are not in the
'OOO processing' group the rest of the filters will ignore them.

Can anyone see any logical holes with this?

Thanks, Chris, for solving the mystery. I had assumed (bad thing to
do) that this was the equivalent of "Start TB at log on" which seemed
a reasonable enough thing to do.

At 11:02 PM on 1/7/2004, Wayne Howard typed ...

W> I only wish that it was documented in the Help file so that clicking

Agreed, Wayne. What is the intent? If the system "halts" (I equate
that with "crash" or "blue screen of death", TB would then start when
the computer restarts. This differs slightly from "start TB at log on"
(which would ALWAYS start TB) because it would re-start TB only if it
had been running at system halt -- but the difference is so minor (if
I'm interpreting it properly) as to be missed by most people.

Documentation continues to be the weakest part of TB's otherwise
stellar operation.
