Well Fredrik sent me his base (spamdict.bye 30.000+ and nspamdict.bye
17.000+) so I should have a good sample.

I checked today and I have caught 0 spam's, but I only received 2 in TB

There is a lot of talk on the list about PopFile so I may give that a try

Is there a way?

Re: Keep attachments in message bodies

2004-06-21 Thread Samson
> Can anyone explain advantages and disadvantages of keeping attachments
> in message bodies and in specific directory?

some earlier versions had a bug that when you move a msg to another
account, the attachements were not moved.

i've been using "store in msg body" for more than 1 year since i
realized the above bug, though it might have been fixed, i never tried
"store separately" again.

the pro is:

- it *guarantees* the attachment to move with your msg

- in the past there were times i received attachments whose filenames
are foreign characters, which generated some funny looking file name
on my hard drive, some even failed to open due to this reason. use "in
body" solution, the attachment is temporarily stored to the working
directory with a 8-digit hex filename only when it is opened, so you
never run into the above problem.

- better/easier for archive. with "store separately", attachment files
lose their original folder/directory and are all put in the
/attach directory.

cons:

- i feel it is slower to navigate in the folder if all attachments are
stored in msg body. not very significantly but noticeable.

- when you move/copy msgs to another folder/account, it is much slower
than "store separately".

- it seems the file size is always wrong when you receive a msg with
attachment. there is always a couple of hundred byte deviation or so
for a 10K file. save it to the disk and you'll see the actual size is
different than what you see in msg window side pane (i'm sure i'm
looking at the "file size" field, not "size on disk" field). but this
doesn't really affect my work/life at all.

and, like other people already noted, it "sounds" more risky to store
all files in one big msg base, but actually i never saw any file
corruption etc and now my msg base is about 1GB. so it is pretty
solid.

in case you want to switch among the 2 different ways:

- from "in body" to "separately": i cannot remember exactly, but i
think creating another account, then change the setting to
"separately", and drag&drop all msgs from old account to the new one,
it should finish this job.

- vice versa: i don't think the above method is gonna work on the
other direction (or it does, my impression of failure was just caused
by the bug in the older version). anyway, use "tools" - "backup",
there is an option to allow you to store external files in msg bodies.
then restore it.

no matter what you do, backup the entire mail directory beforehand to
avoid any data loss. such changes to large amount of data might be
very risky.

Quite easily... at the router level block port 25 connections to
anything but their SMTP servers. Running your own mail server then is
pointless. Also some ISPs don't allow you to run services, and doing
so introduces a breach of contract.

I kept my attachments in the message bodies for almost two years and
had no problems at all. Then my bat.tmp files became too many and I
could not open the attachments. I have since emptied them and all
attachments open just fine.

I'm now keeping them with the external ATTACH file. But I plan to go
back to my former method.

Whichever you choose to do, the advice of an amateur bat

you can view all attachments easily.

*in-dir (con)
when move msg with attachment between folders, there will
probably generate duplicated attachment in the specific dir.

SMTP Servers

2004-06-21 Thread Fredrik Bergström
Hello tbudl,

This is probably off topic and the moderators will kill me, but here
  we go :)

Here in Sweden our ISPs are trying to stop SPAM and Viruses by not
allowing connections to other SMTP servers than the one in the ISPs
network. This means that on my notebook I need to use one SMTP
server when I'm at home and one when I'm at work.

I solved this by creating a small software that is placed in the
Tray and selected the right SMTP server based on where you are on
  the Internet.

The software is in Beta state and I would really like to have some
beta testers, anyone interested? Please contact me off-list about
  beta testing.

Well, its not that much off topic :) Maybe I should read the rules
before getting another moderator cut mark in one day :). Hey, what
is the purpose of this butto...

Some ISPs (for example T-Online, the biggest ISP in Germany) cut the

use another SMTP server of theirs if you don't want it cut. Maybe your

Are you using the BayesIt plug-in?

I got continual lock-ups exactly as you described - poss because I had
many email accounts to check as well.

I ditched BayesIt and went to POPFile as a result.

Amybe BayesIt has a problem when there are many connections going on?

It happens here every once in a while, but not often. I thought it had
to do with K9 or MyGate, but most of the time it works ok, even when I
check all accounts. I cannot reproduce it deliberately.

Look, I'll be glad to host such a list, but that's where it would all

It's a folder - not an account - so I have set From as 'Marten

I have similar problem when used Kaspersky Antivirus 5.0 Personal. It
tries to check mail directly on server, so, if the message is big, it
responds timeout.

Try to set Account -> Properties -> Transport -> Server Timeout

Well, anyway. I'm having some problems with The Bat! hanging when

I have Bayesit! 0.5.5 and AVG installed. I had the same problem when

It's because of list rules, I think.

I installed a newer version of Bayesit! yesterday, going from 0.4gm to
0.5.5.

I see that the only difference is that you need to remove the earlier
bases and that the training function in the configuration dialog is gone.

I marked all the mails that I have in my Junk folders (about 25.000)
and clicked "Mark as Junk" from the Specials Menu. That's the new way
to train, it even shows a small dialog (if you have enabled it) that
says training.

Would have been fun to have some kind of documentation for 0.5.5, I
found some in russian but babelfish.alstavista.com did not help me
that much, and I did not understand anything of it :).

If you do not have enough SPAM I could send you some :) for training.

I have the same problem with one e-mail account (at pop3.tiscali.dk).
It happens when I try to download some virus infected e-mails and my
Norton Antivirus 2003 tries to clean them. It can clean some viruses
without any error, but not all.
I also have that problem with Mozilla Thunderbird.

Have you tried disabling virus checking of incomming e-mails? (but do
not disable all virus checking).

I would be happy if I could catch 1 spam... :-(

I have SpamAssassin running on the mail server, it throws certain Spam into an IMAP
account for manual proofing - I mark all this and flag as Junk (training
BayesIt)

Spam that reaches TB also gets marked as Junk (more BayesIt training)

The problem is that BayesIt never catches spam on it's own !!
