Hi Bat! Fans,

Can anyone point me to this macro?

Searched the archives, but can't seem to find any actual info.

I know some time ago it was the Flavour of the Month here!

Because there is nothing in the Condition for the filter to act on.
I don't even know how it is working manually, it doesn't make sense.
I would suggest something like: Text - Contains - REF: ATM if there is
always a Ref # in the email. That should work with no problem.

The filter will look like this:

Correct, but hardly is possible to delete something in there (and avoid

this is true. But really, what is it I am protecting, and how bad do i
want to protect it? There aren't that many passwords that i have that
are really that important to me, who would really want them??
and if they got them, could they hurt me?? probably no, most of the
time. especially with PGP and an encrypted message! I don't use it much,
but if things get sensitive, I can always use it!

I agree, particularly with the first sentence.

As for the last one, there are opinions that is best to sign/encrypt ALL
your mail, since if you do that only with the sensitive ones, then
it's easier for a snooper to direct his/her dirty intentions.

But, while signing is always possible, encrypting is not, since you
would have to have then your correspondents able to use some PGP/GPG
software.

Also is handy to put y|our public key info somewhere in a corner of your
mail, so that if someone would want to send you an enveloped/encrypted
message, it would be possible.

Now, this indeed has gone to OT area.

That was helpful. So it is basically a sort of preselection you can do. I

Hi Paul,

The way I have done this is create a read filter that has the same
trigger as the incoming filter. I filter my mail by address book and the
send msg to.

As far as I know there is now way for TB! to know were the original mail

So am I! Morning, Noon, and Night! :)

Click on the Sorting Office/Filters choice in the menu.
If you have any filters, they will have carried over from your
previous installation of The Bat!

A list of them will appear. Highlight one. The tabs will let you see
the Conditions, Actions, and Options for the one whose name you
highlight.

If you want to create a new filter, choose File (drop-down menu) in
this Sorting Office/Filters window, and select New and click on it.

Then fill in the empty box fields according to your intuition.

I managed to make mine by trial-and-error and mistakes and asking on
tbbeta when the New Filter System was in post-v. 3.0 testing phase.

Additionally, you have a choice of Incoming Mail and Outgoing Mail
filters here, also.

Once you get the hang of the programmers' logic in your head, to me,
at least, it is much more straightforward, easy, and flexible than the
Old Filter System. For most filters Regular Expressions are now not
needed at all.

A big plus? Huh?

You can use the Move Up/Down/In/Out buttons, if that's what you mean.
 If not:
I guess the Sorting Office is an analogy for a Post Office in that you
can use it to sort your mail into different folders. You have to
create a filter that would move your messages to different directories
based on some criteria.

I have to agree with Mica's comment above.

I haven't bothered in my personal emails, but in my line of work (IT) I
deal a lot with people in other timezones. To this end I always put the
following on my footer:

GMT +13:00

I don't see the point of making any reference to what time it is *now*
in anyone's timezone. I'm telling you I am at GMT + 13. When/if that
matters to anyone, they can figure out whether to call me.

This reminds me of a really simple system that Acorn Computers used in
their RISC OS product. The system clock and ALL timestamps (i.e. on
files etc) were in UTC. Period. The smart bit was that whenever the OS
displayed a time, it adjusted it according to a UTC offset system value.
If the user had to enter a time, you would subtract the offset and store
it as UTC. That way, all you ever had to do was keep your own offset
correct, and keep your clock accurate to the minutes. You could send
files all around the world and everyone could tell exactly how many
hours and minutes old it was without needing to know what timezone the
file originated from.

The Bat! 3.01 Automatically Registered itself?

2004-10-15 Thread Bob Morris
G'day TBUDL Members,

I finally took the plunge and downloaded version 3.0.1.33 the other
day and paid my registration via CIFNET. My registration e-mail
arrived this morning and I viewed in from the Ticker. Immediately
after I got a pop-up window thanking me for registering The Bat! On
checking I see that my name and serial number now appear under Help -
About and I no longer get the reminder message about registering when
I start The Bat! all with no action by me other than reading the
e-mail.

I am a little concerned that merely viewing a text e-mail can trigger
the registration process without any intervention by me. One of the
things that I loved about The Bat! was that unlike some other e-mail
clients scripts or other processes could not be run automatically just
by viewing a message. Has this now changed? Has The Bat! lost its
main security advantage and will other malicious scripts also now run
merely by opening an e-mail? If I was to forward this message to
someone else with an unregistered copy of The Bat! would it also
automatically register their copy in my name? (I'm not planning on
doing so - just curious about the implications of allowing a text
e-mail to trigger something like this.)

I notice that the registration e-mail also instructs that the message
should be printed (obviously sensible) _AND_ backed up to a floppy
disk or writeable CD in case I need to reinstall The Bat! Does this
mean that the registration details will no longer be able to be
entered manually as in the past? If this is the case will a copy of
the message in TXT format be sufficient, or does it need to be saved
in some more exotic format to preserve the hidden trigger to
activate the program? Presumably since the original message was text,
a TXT copy should be sufficient?

On checking further I find that the latest Help File actually does
mention the automatic registration procedure (I got so used to the
Help file being several version out of date that I hadn't looked
there). It also does mention manually entering the details by a cut
and paste if the message was received in another E-mail client, so I
guess that answers that part of my question.

I'm surprised that no one else has commented about this.

I have other software that does similar things. You open the

see that it's already there.

Re: REG EXPRESSIONS

2004-10-15 Thread David M. Dickerson
Hello, everyone.
I have noticed that several people are mentioning the
complicated topic of regular expressions, in how they
relate specifically to The Bat!, of course.
I have played with Perl on and off for several years,
but regular expressions have, I candidly admit,
intimidated me. (After I installed Linux on my multi-
boot PC a couple of years ago, I thought that Linux
would provide me with the chance to get serious
about learning Perl, which I have tried before --
first, when my only computer was a pre-Mac-OS-X
Macintosh and only MacPerl was available and, later,
when DzSoft http://www.dzsoft.com/ released its
excellent Perl editor for Windows -- but people then
started advising me to learn PHP instead.) ;-)
I do not want to write a message that should be on
the TBOT list, but I did want to mention a book, in
English, if you are serious about learning regular
expressions, and do not mind working hard. The book
is O'Reilly's 'Mastering Regular Expressions', by
Jeffrey E. F. Friedl:
The book is four years old (still in its first
edition, 1997), unfortunately:
Regular expressions, a powerful tool for manipulating
text and data, are found in scripting languages, editors,
programming environments, and specialized tools. In this
book, author Jeffrey Friedl leads you through the steps
of crafting a regular expression that gets the job
done. He examines a variety of tools and uses them
in an extensive array of examples, with a major focus
on Perl
O'Reilly's 'Perl Pocket Reference', by Johan Vromans, is,
however, in its fourth edition (2002).
Of course, I am still struggling through Friedl's tome,
and there are probably some great Web sites on regular
expressions that would be more suitable for the casual
user.
I hope that this information is of help to someone!
Thank you!
Cordially,
David

Re: Difference(s) Between The Bat! 3.0's Two Versions

2004-10-15 Thread David M. Dickerson
Hello, Mica!
On Wednesday, 13 October 2004, Mica Mijatovic wrote:

MM I always choose health.
Although I did not understand some parts of your post,
Mica (forgive me), I never would try to tell another
person which flavor of The Bat! she or he is
ethically or legally entitled to use. Each of us is
free to choose, of course, and I am just trying to make
a decision based upon my own set of criteria.
Such a decision is a personal one. As I say, the people
who run major shareware companies in Ukraine and Russia,
and use the personal edition of The Bat! are good friends
of mine, and I make no judgements. The fact that they use
the personal edition is of no concern to me. Which edition
*I* decide to register and use (despite personal difficult
economic times right now) is, of course, my concern.
As we say in English, I was thinking out loud in my post
to TBUDL about my personal ethics and which edition of The
Bat! I should register. Given the lack of a manual for The
Bat! and the situation with user support, users of The Bat!,
regardless of which edition they use, need very important
resources such as TBUDL. I personally feel that a strong
sense of us being a community is an added benefit that
makes the TBUDL even more valuable, because I know from my
own personal experience that we can enrich each other's
lives in such on-line discussions, as well as help each
other solve problems and learn how to use The Bat! most
effectively. (Okay, I admit that I am an idealist.) ;-)
We certainly are in agreement about mangy gratis parakeets,
Mica, which I assume is your metaphor for Outlook Express.
I am evaluating The Bat! as a replacement for Outlook XP/2002,
for which I paid as part of Office XP Professional. Security
obviously is a concern that all of us share. (One of my peeves
about most of the mail that I get from Oulook users is the
assumption that I want all of the bloat of MS-HTML messages;
I kind of miss the early days when my choice for an e-mail
message editor was 'pico' or 'vi' -- text only, either way.)
I apologize if my musings about ethics offended or upset you
in any way, Mica. I really should have kept my musings to
myself. After all, TBUDL is not a discussion list about
philosophy. ;-)
Finally, I probably should not have brought up Percy Bysshe
Shelley in a message about moral issues. I love Shelley's
poetry, but his personal life should probably not be a
role model for anyone concerned about ethics. ;-)
I'm getting *way* off topic, Mica, so I will apologize again,
and wish you the best!
Cordially,
David

and cut and pasted into the 'Enter registration' box anyway - which was
empty.

BayesIT! and filters

2004-10-15 Thread Michael L. Wilson

Hi,

I get some pretty rude email spam. I have setup a filter to delete
from the server anything with certain words in the subject. Many of
these still get processed by BayesIT! and not deleted from the server.

I am using a series of OR statements in the filter, and it looks like
the ones that get through have more than one of my special words.

So, how can I make a filter that will delete from the serve any email
that has one or more of these ten special words?
