TheBAT v3.0 disappears...

2004-10-18 Thread Pietro Iacono
Hi all,

I've upgraded to TheBAT! v3.0 few days ago and I have this problem:
from time to time it close itself, without any error message o
anything else. It just disappears.
This happens both when I'm using other software and TheBAT is in
background, and when I'm not using the PC.
Is it a known bug? Has anybody else noticed it?

Thanks in advance

Eh? We have had British Summer Time since 1916 (with different

I think it's just a way for the government to dictate that we get up

I have not seen TB empty a mail exactly, but I have problems with TB!
(or something along the way that affects only TB!) changing the Part
boundaries of messages so the file names do not appear correctly.

For example, I got the following message which when the source is
viewed shows the following boundary:

> [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@13161
> Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="Draft"
> Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

The problem is that the name should actually be "Draft Cheshire
Supporting People Eligibility Criteria v2.8.doc", but it gets chopped
at the first space in the file name, so in the Attachment panel it
appears as "Draft" and I have to rename it before I can open it. This
only happens with one organisation, which suggests a peculiarity with
their setup, but notwithstanding this, Outlook, OE and Popcorn all
report the file name properly.

Unfortunately I do not have an example downladed in another email
client at the moment - I will test it again when one next arrives -
but I recall that this content boundary only appeared to be truncated
in TB!, that it is either TB! or the interaction of TB! and something
else that is causing the problems.

I created a bug report at the time this started affecting me:

Dear Tbudl,

You are NOT TBUDL - at least a recognisable name, albeit an alias may
help to get some extra input from others. Right now, it's not easy to
take such ill conceived anonymity seriously.

Your 127.0.0.1 folder? On what? Whatever is handing the message to TB
my be stripping it. I've seen blank messages come in to TB but they
start out that way at source. I've never seen TB tamper with mail in
any way (unless by fault of a rare bug during a beta). One of TB's
points of pride is its data integrity when it comes to received mail.

127.0.0.1 is a localhost IP address. So that would seem to imply that
have a local proxy that is intercepting your email before TB sees it.
Do you think that could be what's emptying the content before you see
it?

HEY!! Anyone else reading this thread who's seen TB empty a mail on

Re: Eleven clicks for a full backup

2004-10-18 Thread MAU
Hello Richard,

M>> I'll give you full details later, OK?

> Yes, thanks a lot.

OK, here we go.

First of all I must point our that I have my mail directory separate from
my TB installation one and that it is this directory what I basically
backup.

So, in TB's Options/Preferences/System/Mail directory I have:

G:\The Bat\Mail\

Now, my "The Bat" Profile in Second Copy 2000 is as follows:

What?
  Source Folder: G:\The Bat
  Include subfolders: selected

Which Files?
  All files and folders

Where?
\\Puli\F\The Bat (I make backup up on different computer in my network)

When?
  Frequency: Manual

How?
Exact Copy (Copy source to destination, delete obsolete files from
  destination)
Overwrite destination files even if they are newer than source
  files: selected

I must perhaps clarify that this type of copy does _not_ mean
that every single file is backed up (copied) every time I run
this profile. It _only_ copies those files that have changed
since the last backup.

  Advanced Properties button:
Run Programs tab:
Run program before running profile:
regedit /e "G:\The Bat\tbreg.reg" hkey_current_user\software\rit
Wait for program before proceeding: selected

This, as you can see, is to export and save TB's registry
settings just before doing the backup.

And that is it. I usually run this profile manually every night within
a Group of profiles to backup my databases, docs, etc.

If you ask why don't I backup TB's installation directory, my answer is
that I usually don't backup anything I can recover by re-installing.

HTH.

TB strips nothing. Nothing was sent. The message is nothing but a link
to an external message. TB will not download any external content
since this would amount to a security breach. This is probably why you
think the message is "Empty".

Have you checked the source data of the message? Is the content purely
external or is the message, in fact, comprised of invalid /

Ahhh, OK.
Beside the "%InputBox" macro, which surely provides a working and

write '12', select it, copy to clipboard, overwrite it with QT name,
hit + and let your invoking QT be like this:

MM> This defined by "in use" I worded by "have open".

Correct.

MM> For the term "encrypted format", I have used "non-readable form".

Not really correct.

What the sentence is about to tell is: the PGP-Volume is decrypted
"on-the-fly", that means: whenever something uses "the usual way" to
open a file, i.e. using system call to file system, the "PGP-driver"
will fetch the file from PGP-volumen and decrypt it's contents.

The opposite would be: when a PGP-volume is mounted it is decrypted,
hang into the system and all files are present in a decrypted form.

The advantage of PGPs way is little, but not really useless: there's
no chance to "raw byte" access the PGP-volume and steal files, you'll
have to use system calls to gain access to a file.
With a decrypted volume being mounted (the way PGP does not go) one
could raw byte access this "device" and fetch all the data in their
decrypted representation.

I don't know why any malicious software would try to raw-access a
block device, instead of simply using file system calls, except if
something like ACLs (access control lists) might prevent access
through sys-calls. As PGP-volumes can be formatted using NTFS this
"even a mounted volume is protected" could make sense.

But I guess Scramdisk uses similar technology, else RAM or HDD-space
could rather fast go low, if a complete disk would be stored encryped
AND decrypted when mounted.

Nevertheless I think PGP-disk is superior to Scramdisk (from what I
see on Scramdisk home page as features being supported and screenshots
being presented):
- PGP-volumes can be located at any formatted partition, not only FAT
(if the web site is actually right with this limitation)
- PGP-volumes can be NTFS formatted, I don't see a single hint
Scramdisk supports something different than FAT. This leads to
"mounted volumes are NOT necessarily open to everybody with file
system access", because normal Windows permissions can be applied on
  top of encryption.
- PGPDisk supports AES (256Bit)
- PGP-Desktop is as expensive as DriveCrypt, the successor of Scramdisk,
but you get not only the disk encrypter, but a general (including,
but not limited to communication-) encrypter as well.

But that's just MHO, it doesn't necessarily mean somebody has to share
it :-)

There's one thing that makes me wonder:
DriveCrypt Plus Pack - encrypts the whole operating system

I'm not really sure if and how this works reliable and fast when it
comes to Windows being installed ... but I might be narrow-minded :-)

PopFile has the ability to use headers only. Use headers only and
there is no visible "spam" declaration.

PP> ??? Any example for your wish? I really don't get your point ... :-/

My reply...

For example, I use the BayesIT! anti-spam plugin. It will work with
any number of hours. Me QT is this:

Spam Stats, last %_1 hours (%BAYESITVERSION)
Total Spam Emails: %STATSPAMLETTERS(%_1)
Total Clean Emails: %STATNONSPAMLETTERS(%_1)
BayesIT guessed right %-
%calculate="100-(100*((%STATSPAMERLETTERS(%_1)+%STATNONSPAMERLETTERS(%_1))/(%STATSPAMLETTES(%_1)+%STATNONSPAMLETTERS(%_1"%%
 of the time
My email is %-
%Calc("100*%STATSPAMLETTERS(%_1)/(%STATSPAMLETTERS(%_1)+%STATNONSPAMLETTERS(%_1))
")%% spam
=

Everywhere there is a %_1, I can put a number of hours to report on.
I currently use it like this:

%QT("spamcounthours",24)

and it works just fine. I would like a way where I can put the hours
it before the message is sent, or put the hours in and press
ctrl-space and see an update.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/http/shell/open/ddeexec]

Ah, I see... OK then, what remains is to "relocate" then the "critical"
programs and "sensitive" files to an encrypted partition/container, and
that should have the job done pretty well. So, that supposed "advantage"
of PGP Disk over Scramdisk is dismissed.

This what I wrote above is based on characteristics described in PGP
User Guide: "Even a mounted volume is protected: unless a file or
application is in use, it is stored in encrypted format."

This defined by "in use" I worded by "have open". For the term
"encrypted format", I have used "non-readable form". (Not sure about
correctness of my term for the latter one, that is if is possible that
something "encrypted" might be "readable".)

If this is true, it would give a certain advantage when we use
programs/files in a mounted container while we are eg. 'on line', and
*if* a possible trojan beasts are active, so that if any data from the
container is stolen, it will be in "encrypted format"; except the one we
have "in use" in this moment, and *if* the wise-guy/girl targeted right
this one, eg. some message we read (therefore being "in use") in TB
right in this moment.

Here's my solution to editing a received message without changing header
date/time.

The following filter writes the message to a text file and then runs a
cmd file (D:\Batch\editmsg.cmd) that opens it in my text editor, and
when the editor is closed re-imports it into the inbox of my account
named "personal". To change the account name, change the parameter at
the end of the line that starts "RunExternal".

The filter is executed by CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-E.

Change to suit your paths and text editor. Note that this is as
automatically converted from a v2 filter to a v3 filter, so it might
benefit from some tuning.

 TB! Message Filter
beginFilter
UID: [4AA35E40.01C4B193.09E630C8.30EE97ED]
Name: Edit\20Message

MoveMessage folder \5C\5C\5CTrash

IsContinue
IsActive
IsHotkey
IsHotkeyOnly

No (very) easy ways, as I know. You can edit headers, including the
subject field, only if you save a message to disk, and then edit it
using some text editor - and then importing the message again in TB.
But, the receiving time will not be original one any more.

If you have a fine bunch of such messages then a toll for mass-search
and replace might be of some help.

Yes I thought of that but the problem of later re-filtering remains
doesn't it? Whatever the 'mark' and whatever the filter condition
still needs to be altered to prevent later filtering back into the

This comment deserves a response here.

Most anti-virus programs come with incoming/outgoing message
monitoring, of which Kapersky anti-virus is no exception. In fact, all
the antivirus programs for which there are TB! plugin, do have
incoming/outgoing mail monitoring support.

Why have the plugin then?

- The plug-in will scan mail received and sent over encrypted
connections. Once you use an encrypted connection such as SSL/TLS,
this makes monitoring with antivirus proxies useless. The use of
encrypted connections is becoming more and more popular these days.

- The plugin allows you to place infected messages in a quarantine
folder. This makes it dead easy to locate the infected message when
it's received. If you're away from the machine and return, the
Quarantine folder count reflects what has happened in your absence.

- You can add a footer or header to the message body saying what virus
was found. Not all antivirus monitors will do this when an infected
message is detected.

- You can delete/attempt cure of the infected attachment.

- You can delete the message.

- You can send an autoresponse message if you like.

It makes you able to use OpenPGP from within TB!.

TB! will use the corresponding options depending on which OpenPGP
solution you wish to use from within TB!. OpenPGP KeyManager will open
the keymanager for PGP 8.0.2 if you're using it with TB!. The
preferences will open PGP preferences.

You may wish not to use OpenPGP from within TB! and only externally.
There are those who do not wish to use integrated support.

The other thing is that you may have multiple solutions installed. I
have PGP 8.1 installed, as well as GnuPG/GPG Shell. I've chosen to use
PGP 8.1 with TB!. How would TB! know which one you wish to integrate
with and if you wish to integrate at all?

Well, there's the Internal PGP version. That's based on PGP v2.x. Not
many use it because of its limited support for the DH/DSS keys that
are commonly used today.

There's GnuPG http://www.gnupg.org

With TB! it's best to check the message body or the headers for
strings that would imply the message is signed. PGP/MIME signed
messages would have a header string to the effect:

Content-Type: multipart/signed

For inline signatures, do a text match for the following strings in
the message body:

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

-BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-

AGA> does this do?

It enables or disables PGP-usage. There is a different method for
signing and/or encrypting messages: S/MIME.
If both were activated the message would be double signed/encrypted,
this is most the times *not* intended.

Therefore you have the possibility to selectively activate and/or
deactivate any of these two security mechanisms. Hereby activating one
does NOT imply deactivating the other.

And in the end you only have to sign/encrypt the message, without
further carrying about which method will be used (therefore only one
macro per command, %SignComplete & %EncryptComplete, has to exist).

AGA> 2. What's the best way to recognize PGP-signed messages in incoming mail
AGA> with filters?

The best? Guess you'll have to figure yourself what is best *for you*.
One possibility could be to filter for "Content-Type: multipart/signed"
in message source. One could extend search pattern to include
'protocol="application/pgp-signature"' too, but I'm to lazy to search
my database if there are other protocol strings that indicate PGP
signature.
Of course this only captures PGP/MIME signed messages, for "inline"
signed messages you'll have to add the appropriate signal string
yourself :-)

AGA> since I can generally assume that any message with a PGP
AGA> signature is not spam

Wrong assumption. Since spammers know PGP signed messages get lesser
scores in anti spam software they tend to pretend sending PGP-signed
messages (usually inline signed). Of course the signature *IS*
invalid, it's just they fake the general syntax, so somebody checking
only *if* a signature is present, but not it the signature is valid,
is satisfied.

No problem on my end: "12% discount".

Perhaps she should use a proper character encoding?

The % symbol is a special character in a TB template and is expected
to indicate the presence of a macro. To induce TB to include a real %
sign from a template, simply double it up: "12%% discount".

Two options:

A) use % instead of the actual symbol if the output is HTML

B) use 'per cent' in words if the output is plain text.
