Connection centre hang

2004-11-10 Thread P.Johnson
Hello,

The Connection Centre (the window that monitors incoming/outgoing
mail) has started to hang after a new mail download. After mail is
downloaded, the Connection Centre sits on the last account and does
not close.

Is this a bug; is there a solution or workaround?

I should mention, though I hope it is not related, that I have just
restored TB from a backup to a new computer.

Thanks!

Just had a quick play with the new pop3+smtp enabled in gmail and TB!

I enabled TLS connections for pop3 and smtp + smtp authentication and it
appears to be working just fine - neat !

When IMAP comes along it will be even better.

Help: TheBat! Not closing on Exit - 2nd Request!

2004-11-10 Thread Michael Rudnick

Sorry to be pain but... I posted the request below but didn't receive
a reply. Earlier I posted a message relating to this issue and Allie
Martin replied (Re: Having Trouble Closing TheBat - 2nd Request). I
have tried the ideas in that message but am no farther to solving the
problem.

==

I'm having a nuisance issue with TheBat! I'm using the latest version
although this problem occurred before in 2.x.

Some preliminary info:
- I have my Bat files on my server. The folders 'available offline' so
  I can always access them.
- I made the tests below with virus scanning turned off to remove that
  as a possible problem.
- I turned off mail checking during the testing (at startup and after
  x minutes).
- I removed the spam filter (Bayes Filter) for the tests.

Now the problem:

I log off, disconnect from network, then log on and open TheBat!
When I close the program, the process (in Task Manager) ends
  immediately upon exiting.

I log off or restart, connect to network, and log on and open
TheBat! When I close the program, the process (in Task Manager)
takes over 2 minutes to end.

Another point: Whenever I open TheBat! (in either situation listed
above) it takes about a minute for all the folders to display. During
that time TheBat! process is taking most or all of the CPU resources.

I'm wondering if there is something fundamentally wrong with the
installation. Should I uninstall and reinstall the program? Is there
another test I should run to figure out why this is occurring?

Thanks for your help.

spamcop.net is with doubt the best - i.e. it filters all the spam and
virii for you and just lets the good stuff through. Sophisticated
filtering can be selected and whitelists etc. $30USD a year, well worth
it. I have all my main email sent from one inbox to spamcop and

Hey, nice pointer!

It's now running on my laptop. The ability to properly use email when

I may even consider setting it up on our small LAN at work to avoid

What it has to do with editing messages, with an

The way I understand it, the forum on the Rit page has another purpose
than this list. Over there, only things that work correctly are
discussed in a way that helps newbies to use them. (Somebody CMIIW.)

If there is an issue with things that don't work, you have found the
right ML to post them. Here, it will be analysed and may find its way

I don't know anything about IMAP. But if you post your worries here, I

I would recommend K9, as well, and SpamPal.

I've had K9 running with The Bat! for about 6 weeks and it's 98.5%
accurate. All the inaccuracies now are false negatives (spam
misclassified as good), because spammers keep finding new combinations
to bypass bayesian filters. The ongoing training is a bit of a
hassle, but I kind of enjoy it.

I have also been running SpamPal on an Outlook Express system and it
continues chugging along at 100% accuracy, with the only intervention
being periodic updates.

For a no-brainer spam filter, go with SpamPal. For a filter that,
while requiring a bigger learning curve and more user involvement, can
be fine-tuned for your own breed of good mail and spam, try K9.

My Main computer is connected via a lan to my Linksys modem router WAG54G. I

Your ISP is refusing the HELO argument you're using.

I've been doing some testing just now and found that TB sends the
machine name unless you're using an smtp proxy on your own machine.

Apparently OE is using the machine name, it looks like your pc is
called 'main', since that's what OE uses when communicating to the
server.

Could you give some more info on your setup?

Are you on a LAN?
Are you using a proxy-server to share your internet connection?
Are scanning outgoing mail with your virus scanner?
Have you got a fixed IP address from your ISP (or your LAN)?
What firewall (if any) re you using?

JCG> Is this a bug in the current Bat version ?

No, it's your ISP's mail server arbitrarily refusing your helo

This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without

Interesting. It would be nice to see what exactly is being rejected.

The Helo name TB! usually sends is either your machine IP or machine
name. I'm not sure why your ISP is rejecting this.

Take a look at this page:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/03/msg12871.html

When I send a message to my local server, the Helo name sent is
localhost. TB! is on the same machine as the server.

"Wed 2004-11-10 05:31:41: <-- EHLO localhost"

When sending from my laptop on the network:

Wed 2004-11-10 06:27:07: <-- EHLO LAPTOP-HOME

The machine name is sent.

So, it's very likely that TB! sends your machine name and your ISP is
having a problem with that.

It should be interesting to see what OE sends. I don't have it installed
though to check.

I just sent a message with OE and the Helo is:

Wed 2004-11-10 06:32:25: <-- EHLO laptophome

I have no idea why the Helo command is rejected.

Hello Gérard,
Thanks for the answer but maybe I was not so clear, when I use CEGETEL ADSL
I have, of course, selected smtp.cegetel.net in account properties to send

In case you use improper smtp server, the message you receive is something

That's for older versions of TB! before integrated support for PGP
v5,6,7,8 came on stream. I had tried the integrated support with v6 and
though it worked, there were little cosmetic quirks that were ironed out
if I used the traditionally provided dlls you're now referring to.

PGP v8 will not work with those old dll files. The DLL's provide plugin
support for v5 and 6. Versions 7 and 8 require the integrated support.

> More info is at https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=3488.

Hmmm. I've never had that problem before and I've been using PGP v8
since my v2 days. The only problem I've recalled having was that the
PGPSDK service would crash, but that was long ago and it spontaneously
stopped.

TB! and the PGPSDK service is having a problem on your machine. I don't
know why. Sorry that I can't be of any better help.

This posting violated the list rules regarding top posting.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your
message and following it with all quoted text below, is not
encouraged and we actually request that you not do so on this list
because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the
   top of the message

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to
which you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to,
and then below the quotation, type your response. If you're
responding to more than one part of the original, then quote each
part separately and follow each part with your response.

Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that
you may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much
respect this. However, this is the format that most of the active
members here prefer and all members are expected, and are being
asked to use the format that will make most of the active membership
here comfortable reading. You'll likely get a more responsive group
when you post using a style that is comfortable for them to read and
understand.

If you're on a dialup connection with a dynamic IP adress your message
will most likely be filtered as spam somewhere by a DNSBL filter...

Hi Jean,

What has happend is that your email setting are based on sending email using the
Wanadoserver. This works fine if you are on the Wanado network.

To prevent spammers using email servers on other networks a lot of email servers
only allow connection to the email server if you are actually on their network
and do not allow you to use any other email address then the one of the network.

When you switch networks. ea calling on line 2, you cannot use the wanada
mailserver, but you have to use the Cegetel sever and apparently you also have
to use the Cegetel email address.

Also make sure that you change settings in both email accounts in TB!

To prevent all this hassle, you can use your own SMTP server and you will never
have to worry about what settings are used by any ISP ever again :-)

Does this server require authentication?

If yes... do you maybe filter spam with a local proxy? If so, maybe
you have accidentally set the authentication info for mail retrieval
(from the local proxy) for the SMTP server, as well?

Just a guess...

This a a general question rather than specifically for Pat.

In view of the difficulties people face in restoring TB! is it worth
putting a FGA together?

I would be happy to draft something for comments incorporating the
advice that has been given in this group - although I wouldn't propose
using a TB! backup, it seems much easier to just copy the directories
and restore the registry keys.

Alexander>> What mail protocol are you using, POP3 or IMAP?

You have two choices then:

1. use an antispam plugin thats directly available in TheBat

There are two: BayesIT (delivered with The Bat, but optional to
install) and BayesFilter (separate download). Depending on whom you
ask, you may get different answers regarding their usability and
performance. For some it is performing very well, for others it
doesn't work, another can't use these plugins at all because The Bat
hangs when they're installed, or something... I only tried BayesIT a
while ago and it didn't perform well for me, but then again, it has
been further developped quite a bit since then.

2. use an external antispam tool (a local proxy)

There's a huge number of those available, I'd say the most common are
SpamPal (uses DNS blacklists & can use Bayes filtering with a plugin),
K9 (very small, very fast, pure Bayes filter with optional
black/whitelists) and PopFile (much more than just a spam filter, it
is a mail classification program - you can not only keep ham & spam
apart, but filter messages into any "bucket" that you can create
yourself).

All those "Bayes" filters require a little bit of training (you have
to tell 'em what it spam and what is not, or rather, for PopFile,
which mail goes into which bucket) before they start filtering
correctly, but their performance usually beats every other filtering
technology - after a while you'll usually reach >99% accuracy.

I've been a PopFile user myself quite a while, but it is a real
resource hog and dead slow (its written in Perl), and as I didn't
benefit that much from its classification features (I can do most of
it with TB's filters), I stopped using it. So, I'd recommend K9 if
you're looking for a really fast spam filter. Its very lean (only
113kB download including installer) and has a good & simple GUI to
(re)classify the mails.

cannot send Email via smtp with Cegetel.net

2004-11-10 Thread Jean Claude Gaertner
Hello,
I'm currently evaluating The Bat and in the meantime I'm also evaluating a
new ADSL provider (Cegetel).
Let me explain :
I have Wanadoo ADSL provider on phone line 1 and Cegetel on phone line 2
On phone line 1 via smtp.wanadoo.fr, I can send Email via smtp protocol with
no problem
On phone line 2 via smtp.cegetel.net, I am not able to send any message at
all. The log report the following :
!10/11/2004, 08:38:24: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply -
: Helo command rejected: Invalid name
10/11/2004, 08:38:24: SEND - connection finished - 0 messages sent
10/11/2004, 08:38:24: SEND - Some messages were not sent - check the log
for details
If I switch to Outlook Express, with the same parameters I can send Email
via smtp.cegetel.net. In fact I'm sending this message via Outlook Express
and Cegetel.
Is this a bug in the current Bat version ?
I have tried the current release version and the latest beta 3.02 beta 6
I would appreciate any pointer
Best regards from France

K9 - http://keir.net

I've been using it for quite a while. I settled on thebat some months
ago and tried the built-in anti-spam. I found it really poor, but
persevered. I've now given up. K9 worked really well to start with
and just got better quite quickly. It's 99.27% accurate with
virtually never a false positive. TheBat on it's own maybe managed
50% .

K9 can be a bit non-obvious to set up, but after that it's just great.
