Just wondering, are you sure that RedEdit is reading the data off of
this hard drive. I know of no way to open a registry hive in RegEdit,
so if the old drive in unbootable, you will not be able to get the
data with RegEdit.

Said another way:
RedEdit only reads the data from the active version of Windows, so you
will need to boot off the old drive to get the data.

David,

This is very generous, and I am grateful for the thought.

If everyone decides this approrpriate and doable, I will of course be
happy to upgrade to v3.

Thanks again.

Thank you for your reply. (I don't mind the tone at all; you should
hear the tone I use with myself over that missing Password Key.)

Anyway, the guidance above was clear, and I appreciate it --
unfortunately, I didn't solve the problem with it.

I used RegEdit on my old drive (contained in an external enclosure,
connected to to my new system by a USB), got to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The clicked on that folder. The right
hand panel of the RegEdit did fill with various listings, but nothing
I could identify as a key. The listing started with Default, Allow
Local Delivery, went down the alphabet with various listings, and
where a SoftwareRegistrationId would be placed appeared Simple Menus
followed immediately by Split Mode Screen followed by other listings
down to the final Zoomed. Nevertheless, I exported the appropriate
folder as directed, then imported into the registry on the new system.
Rebooted the system. No observable result. TB tells me I have five
days left to register.

So, would you suggest:

1. I just try and register this as an original registration, paying
whatever license fee is necessary, and engage in the two-stage upgrade
to v3 later? (The fee isn't a problem. What I want is for TB to work
for me.)?

2. Take David up on his generous offer to help out with his v1
information, then later engaging in the process of first moving to
v1.62, then upgrading to or buying anew v.3?

3. Something else?

Many thanks

Strange entries in address book being added automagically

2005-02-03 Thread Anthony G. Atkielski
I've noticed a lot of strange entries in my address book: people I don't
know, with complete e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, and postal
addresses, always in the same format.

Is there anything in TB that might be automatically adding addresses to
my address book? I looked around for options that might add something
automatically, but I haven't found any. Since they come complete with
addresses, I assume that vCards or something are the source, but where
might TB be picking up vCards?

I have to admit that I like V3. I was a bit worried that it would run
slow on my older laptop. Microsoftophobia, the fear that software
upgrades will force a hardware upgrade. :) But it actually runs very
well. Faster than using webmail even.

Upgrading is even better right now too, with the 30% offer... I just
hope I don't get screwed over on that with CIFNet.

JM> in any other way resolve the problem?

"CIFnet" is one clue.

"Please keep the password remembered (it was entered by you in the
registration form)." is another.

None of the moderators can help - we have no relationship with
RITlabs. CIFnet are a 3rd party reseller, from whom you bought a
licence - RITlabs have no records of that transaction, hence no email
address on file.

The old "buy a new key for $3" scheme is long finished. RIT no longer
sell nor supply licences for v1. V3 is the only version you can buy a
key for and not as a $3 replacement.

Your *only* recourse, having lost, forgotten or failed in whatever
manner to retain the password that unlocks your v1 is to retrieve the
original SoftwareRegistrationID key from the system registry using
regedit (as described to you) - and I will try again below - or to buy
a v3 key.

Installing v3 over your current system is an option that would have
been made much simpler had you decided to attempt it earlier. Suitable
system backups would have ensured no data loss. What you should have
done was to install an interim 1.62 update - the final v1 release.
That would have converted your mailbase to a format that v3 can
assimilate without error. All of the harbingers of doom about
risks of corruption have done you few favours.

Okay - so much for the "should haves". If you still have access to the
system registry on the old system, use RegEdit to navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!\ as you did before. This time
*click on that folder*. The right hand panel of the RegEdit screen
fills with the Keys. One is the SoftwareRegistrationId. It isn't a
folder. It's a key within the folder. Not that it will help you to
make use of it from there per-se. What you should do is to export the
whole "The Bat!" folder using Regedit's File..Export function. Run up
the resulting .reg file on the new system and you should be instantly
registered.

Failing this, upgrade, in stages, to v3 via 1.62 and buy an update for
v3. That will get you up, running and up to date all at once.

I hope this helps somewhat. Sorry if the tone seems a little harsh in
places but I do notice a number of self-inflicted wounds here!

Catch-22, Kafka-esque - Take Your Pick: Can't Get Registration Help

2005-02-03 Thread Jerrold Mundis
Hi,

In 5 days and and some few hours, my purchased, paid-for, and
registered version of The Bat! will cease to function, denying me
access to TB! and to years worth of archived business and personal
messages.

As I stated before here:

"I wrote to the list about a month ago when I had installed my old copy
TB -- version 1.48d (the Christmas edition)-- onto my new machine and
could not access my accounts with their several thousands of archived
business and personal emails. Marck, Thomas, Diego, and Andrew
graciously helped me, and I was able to resolve the problem.

"Now I face a new difficulty: What TB thinks was my 30 Day Trial
Period for the new installation ended and I am now into what it things
is my 10 Day Extension, after which I am informed I will no longer be
able to use TB.

"Now, I have been able to find my original letter of confirmation of
purchase from RitLabs, I have found The Bat! Key I was sent. I have
found The Bat! Checksum I was sent. I have the serial number of my
purchased program -- but what I *don't* have and can't find my is Key
Password from those years ago, and without that TB will not allow me
to execute this 'new registration.' "

(My old drive from my old machine is not bootable, and I cannot figure
out how to get my Password Key from it.)

So I went to Ritlabs' website to pay whatever money was necessary to
get a copy of my Key Password. But I can't get support there unless I
register -- or, if registered, give them my email so the can mail me a
new support password, so I can then ask them a copy of my Key
Password.

Lo and behold there, compounding in the best Kafka-esque fashion,
Ritlabs informs me it doesn't recognize my email address

Here, for all interested parties (and I hope there are some) is a copy
of the original registration confirmation Ritlabs sent to my at the
email address I entered (and was told wasn't recognized) at the
Ritlabs website (Jerrold Mundis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>). I have XX-ed out
some of the serial numbers:

So I think we can all agree that I did indeed purchase and register
this program -- at least Ritlabs, at one time, believed that I did

TB! is superb program. If it had any kind of even modestly reasonable
customer support or even minimal care, it could probably sweep the
field. But, alas, that seems hopeless.

But whatever the case, for now, I would simply settle for being able
to use my efficient program as I have for the last several years,
quietly and in peace. (As stated before, I'd be happy to upgrade to
the most recent version, and happily pay for that, but I have been
warned that the folder structure is different, and I might run into
problems trying to get everyting (my old folders and sorting rules)
operational in the new version.

Will one of the moderators -- or anyone with any kind of connection at
all with Ritlabs -- please tell me how I can get my Password Key, or
in any other way resolve the problem?

I would be deeply grateful.

Thank you.

Again, by design. GMane will not accept messages from invalid
addresses or addresses which fail an initial challenge. This is an
antispam measure. Scrambling addresses and id's is another method for
preventing spammer abuse.
