And sure enough, after waiting a short while without altering any
settings, gmail accepted my connection and relayed my test message (to
a non-gmail account, delivered 2 minutes later)

I also have a (little-used) gmail account. I can usually send and
receive just fine but today I find I can not send, just receive. This
happens sometimes and I usually find it is ok a couple of days (or
hours) later.

The setting that nearly always works for me is STARTLS to port 587,
Perform SMTP authentication, Same user/password as for Mail Retrieval.

You could probably do something based around the %ABnnnPPP macro.
Look in TB!'s help file under "macros" - I've pasted some of the entry
here.

---Begin paste---

  ABnnnPPP
Inserts a field from the address book.

"nnn" determines the address used, "PPP" is the address book field to
be used.

Values for nnn:

TOAddress Book entry for the TO header (current message)

FROMAddress Book entry for the FROM header (current message)

[...]

Values for PPP:

Namefull name

FirstNamefirst name

LastNamelast name

MiddleNamemiddle name

Handlehandle

NamePrefixname prefix

NameSuffixname suffix

Birthdaydate of birth

e-mailprimary e-mail address

Addrprivate street address

[...]

---End paste---

There's probably a slicker way but one suggestion is to set up a quick
template that extracts the required fields from the address book entry
of the person the email's addressed to.

For example, %ABtoFirstName would insert the contents of the first
name field from the address book entry of the person addressed in the
"To" field of the message.

To send Bill's details to Fred, you would create a message addressed
to Bill. You would then call the Quick template. Then change the "To"
field to Fred. You now have a message addressed to Fred containing
Bill's details.

Is Bill OK with you sending Fred his contact details?

All I can say is that various virus infections and other nuisance things
make my PC working in an odd mode I have a gmail account and following
the data supplied had it running with the bat when installed the first time.
Problem is, at the moment it doesn't work As mentioned, make sure
you don't loose emails and following the instructions try a clean
install I probably will do the same as soon as I have a virus removed
which made itself a home in my PC.

Maybe with *your* configuration of The Bat!, but not with The Bat
itself. I also have a gmail account and I can send and receive with TB
without any problems.

It isn't very likely that it is TB, after all I can connect just fine
with TB and gamil, I don't know what version of TB you're using, but
gmail and TB have been compatible since the beginning of gmail.

When you're able to manage a proper download with another mail client
and not with TB then you're probably enabling some option that you
shouldn't.

Re: SSL SMTP Problems

The problem is, it is The Bat. I cannot get Internode to work either.
If I can get both services to work fine with Thunderbird on the same
computer, why do they not work with The Bat?>

I have tried them both months ago and had the same problem. It is
something wrong with The Bat.

Thanks

Greetings Scott, 07:20, Thursday, November 20, 2008

I had exactly the same experience with Gmail. I tried all combinations of
STARTTLS and TLS, port 465 and 587. It simply refused to send mail. Very
frustrating.

Some weeks later, however, I tried again and it worked the first time. My
guess is that once it gets set wrong, something (in The Bat or Gmail?)
doesn't get reset.

Try deleting the account and starting with a new one. The settings Roelof
recommends really do work.

Crikey - TB! doesn't like ">" appearing in quoted text!

Thanks for the response, I'd been doing a similar thing with Outlook
(which I still use for contacts).

This is definitely one step closer, but I was hoping that there was
some cunning way to do it from a quick template or similar.

I'll be using this method in the meantime though :-)

Do as you're told by both servers and enable authentication
This works for me with gmail.
smtp server: smtp.gmail.com
connection: secure to dedicated port (TLS) port 465
Authentication -> Perform SMTP authentication
Same user/password as for Mail Retrieval

Ad from what I saw at Internode's, the same setting should work there,
except for the smtp server, that should be: securemail.internode.on.net
