TB + GPG != love
Hello, Haven't used GPG with TB since v8.X, just tried on v9 and it seems like TB! is not calling Pinentry properly if user's key is on a card. ``` gpg: using "and...@savchenko.net" as default secret key for signing gpg: signing failed: Bad PIN gpg: [stdin]: clear-sign failed: Bad PIN ``` The very same card works via: 1. `gpg` ELF 2. `gpg.exe` on Windows 3. TheBat! advertises support of insecure TLS cipher suits
Hello, While trying to make sense of the appalling connection success rate in v9.2.3.0, I have looked at the TLS session and observed the following: 1. After receiving ACK, TB! starts ClientHello advertising support of 26 different cipher suits. Some of them look questionably at best and concerning at worst. 3. In particular TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_MD5 is prohibited by IETF (see the RFC 7465) and 3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA has rather limited use in 2020. I am not quite sure if this affects failing sessions, but perhaps RitLabs can restrict the list to something more up-to-date? For example: 1. ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 2. ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 3. ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 4. ECDHE-ECDSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305 5. ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305 6. DHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 7. DHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 Additionally, I would check if TB! has TLS 1.0/1.1 disabled. v1.2 has turned 12 years old last month :) -- v9.2.3.0 x64 on Windows 10 18363 Current version is 9.1.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

v9.2.2 does not delete mail on server as scheduled
Hello, After resurrecting TB! by reverting back to v9.1.X I have noticed it has started re-downloading all e-mails again. This is a well-known bug and affects number of people at random. You can find more details at https://bt.ritlabs.com/view.php?id=1779. After logging into the Webmail interface, I have found that TB! wasn't deleting old e-mails despite the option "Keep messages on server" being set to 1 day. MX is managed by "mailbox.org" which is rather well-known operator and so far reported no misconfigurations on their side that would introduce such issue (e.g. MTA reporting message as deleted and failing to actually remove it from the base). TheBat does not use ASLR?
Hello, Under "features" section, RitLabs claims: > The Bat! uses Windows Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) and > Data Execution Prevention (DEP) to protect your computer from viruses > and malware spread via email. However, looking at executable, it sits at the default image address (0x0040) and ProcessExplorer reports ASLR being disabled. Is this a one-off glitch that has occurred while linking a specific build, me looking in wrong places or a false advertisement? Have filled the ticket with RitLabs, let's see what comes back. Column width / UI bugs
Hello, I am fighting the battle with the quirks of TheBat! interface and it seems like I am not exactly winning here. The interface is not adaptive and riddled with tiny annoying glitches that get on your nerves daily. I am aware of the "switch to summary view" option, that is not it. If I have to summarise, the most annoying ones are: [1] Lack of "automatic" width scaling. Ever used Total Commander? Does not matter what windows size is, there are no ugly gaps on the sides. If window is resized, TC would automatically adjust width of the "Name" column while leaving Date/Extension/Size the same. If window is resized back to its initial scale - TC returns to precisely the same layout without user's intervention. Logical? Yes, very much so. What TheBat offers instead? You have guessed it right, horizontal scroller... [2] Column width is constantly changing when switching between folders that share the same "View Mode". I have no logical explanation here. Have tried to delete all custom views and set two folders to the "No View Mode" setting - still the same, width of columns changes seemingly at random. [3] Daily "access violation" errors. Most of them refer to thebat64.exe attempting to utilize non-existing object (reading FF/00). Logs and screenshots submitted to Mantis. While I do not want to complain, this situation leaves me questioning own life choices. I have paid for a commercial software in hope it will offer certain advantages over an open-source and free-as-in-beer MUA* I have been using previously. To the day, it has been a fight with non-operational GPG (v8 builds), appalling testing of releases (or lack thereof) and above-mentioned interface nuisances. * Claws Mail. -- Cheers, A Current version is 8.0.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Cleartext leaks in encrypted TheBat! setup
Hello, If someone is running TheBat! with master password enabled, could you please check: 1. $MAILDIR/UserDics contains *.udc files with unencrypted user dictionaries (words added to the dict.) 2. $MAILDIR location and username in .TBK backup are stored in cleartext. Try `string *.TBK* | head -20` to see it somewhere at the beginning. -- Cheers, A Current version is 8.0.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[2]: encrypting messages
Hello Christopher, Thank you for the well-constructed and informative message, I just wanted to add one small point to the below: >> What I would like to be able to do is send password-protected >> messages that can only be opened by the receiving party who has the >> password. Is that what this process does? > Neither S/MIME encryption nor Open PGP encryption password protect a > message. (Encryption doesn't require password protection, and > password protection doesn't imply encryption.) > S/MIME and Open PGP use asymmetric cryptography (public & private > keys). There is no "shared secret" or password between the two of you. > A shared password would be a use of symmetric cryptography. I'm not > aware of an email encryption standard that uses symmetric cryptography. It is *technically* possible to use GPG in symmetric mode for messaging purposes. ``` $ echo "Hello World" > cleartext $ gpg -o encrypted -c cleartext ``` ...Then one needs to wrap the routine above into something palatable for e-mail usage. I could imagine doing it with (neo)mutt et al., but not with TheBat. -- Regards, A Current version is 8.0.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Two things: 1. Screenshots are (apparently) stripped from the messages posted to this list. 2. Somewhat desirable behaviour can be achieved by disabling tabs altogether. Then, clearing "Quick Search" returns view to the message list and temporarily created tabs survive only until TheBat is restarted. Menu --> Workspace --> Untick "Show message list tabs". Automatically close tabs upon clearing "quick search" field
Hello All, Every time I search for something using a "Quick Search" toolbar, small tab with the results appears underneath the message list. Those tabs are not deleted automatically and stay there as a useless reminder of past attempts to find something. Worse, entering new text in the "Quick Search" creates a search-within-a-search scenario. Similar to "cat blah | grep something | grep whatever" in a shell. Questions: * Is anyone aware of a way to disable automatic tabs creation? * ...or maybe there is a way to close them all automatically? * ...or (as the last resort) create a hotkey that nukes them all? Checked the settings, not much in there. Screenshot attached. -- Many thanks, A Current version is 8.0.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

[Feature] Tabs support
Greetings, As an avid Zimbra user (as well the TheBat user!), I wonder if anyone else is missing "tabs" in the interface? Imagine fairly typical situation: you are working on several letters at the same time and need to quickly skim through something in the Inbox. On *nix, one could use tiling WM and Claws to create nested layout. Or just use Thunderbird. Zimbra offers tabs out of the box. TheBat... As far as I can tell, tabs are not supported. TheBat! development pace, RitLabs support, Bugs.
Hello All, I am evaluating TheBat for a bit more than a week and, so far, have mixed feelings. While software certainly has a sheer amount of user-exposed functions and allows fair amount of adaption for a particular workflow, there are bugs that make me question QC process at RitLabs. Concerning the latter, reading "Credits" dialog, company seems to consist of /approximately/ 5 people: > Analytics, Testing and Support: > Alexandr Petrari, Julia Buzmacova, Ecaterina Dubceac. > Programming (version 8): Maxim Masiutin, Andrei Sliusarenco. 2 developers, 3 in operations. Ok, no panic, please. They've been in business when some of the fellow members were still attending a high school. However, certain issues make me wonder about priorities. Some examples: 0001793: Message corruption if private key is not available for automatic decryption 0001794: Having space before ">" symbol prevents TheBat from recognizing line as the quote 0001795: Signature is stripped after "Decrypt message" action 0001799: TheBat! does not work with GnuPG keychain 0001792: Do not add "(decrypted)" to the subject line Numbers are from the Mantis tracker. And this is after a week of usage. I understand that development team (two developers?) are busy shipping the version 9, but some of the reported bugs might belong to the "showstopper" category and others, like #1792 or #1794 should be fairly trivial to fix. Therefore, my questions are: 1. Is there a model of community engagement and some transparency to the development process? Mantis looks almost completely abandoned. Another user responds at https://bt.ritlabs.com/view.php?id=1798#c5381, "That is a missing feature since many many years" and this passage receives zero feedback from "Analytics, Testing and Support". 2. Does anyones have a reliable communication channel with the office in Chisinau? 3. If the answer to the question directly above is "Yes", - have you been successful in having a chat with mr.Masiutin regarding the future? I would _love_ to see TheBat! as the successful MUA and willing to tolerate its commercial nature, but it implies having reliable support from the company that stands by their own product. Otherwise, safer bet would be to go with the OpenSource solutions (Claws, Thunderbird, etc) where community is active, developers are within the reach and fixing the bug can be achieved by either helping others or submitting a pull request by oneself. Yours truly, A Current version is 8.0.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
