Hi Daniel

No, there isn't. But I'd rather make this via a server because I've
not running TB 24 hours a day. So, I've set up a perl script on my my
webserver to do such a job, but I didn't finished yet with all the
features. Because I've got a lot to do else...

Unfortunately, I can't make this service available to everyone,
because I don't want to have a big mail traffic on my server - only
for friends... :-))

But I'll make the script available for those who want it to install on
their own servers (freeware, of course).

No, I don't think so.

Email addresses are always saved in the default address book in the
root (I mean not in a subgroup). You've to edit the group membership

If you press enter, then the second (and third...) line will be
treated as individual cookies.

But you can use the new %WRAPPED macro (v1.49). Then you can insert
your cookies like this:
  %WRAPPED="%COOKIE"

Write your message in a quick template and mark the checkbox 'Use for
new messages/Mass mailing'. Then go to your address book, mark the
recipients and select the menu command 'File/Mass mailing using
template/[your_template_handle]'. Click ok, and your message will be
sent to all recipients (only with the recipients' name in the TO field
as you requested). Now you may delete your quick template.

Bug with %WRAPPED macro

2001-01-06 Thread Beat Strasser

Hi there

I'm very happy that Ritlabs finally have made the feature with this
%WRAPPED macro.

But there are 2 bugs:

You always have to use the %WRAPPED macro at the beginning of a line
and this is annoying. I want to use something like this in my reading
confirmation template:

%NOWRAPJUSTIFY
  To: %OTONAME <%OTOADDR>
  Date:%ODATEEN, %OTIMELONGEN
  Subject: %WRAPPED="%OSUBJ"
  Size:%OTEXTSIZE Bytes
  Message ID: %OMsgID
  Attachments: %WRAPPED="%OATTACHMENTS"

So, I've got 15 chars before the %WRAPPED text. This means that the
text isn't wrapped at 70 chars, but at 85 chars. I think this has to
be repaired. It would be even better, if the wrapped text would start
in my case at char 3 (or even 16? = where the macro started). This
would look like this:

Subject: This is a very large subject line and I don't know why
people are chatting so much in this line...
^^
2 chars space!

The other bug is that there is *always* a line break after %WRAPPED.

Just one question: does the signature separator '-- ' also count as a

Is my signature at the bottom 6 or 5 lines long (or 4 'cause there is

You've chosen a good MUA with TB, especially in view of virus
protection. TB does a great job with recognising possible virus
attacks: not allowing code in html mails, warning messages before
opening an attachment (default is saving, not opening), etc...

If you nevertheless have a virus infection, the virus had to be
especially written for TB, else a virus would never find your saved
email addresses or messages - so, you're safe with TB.

> how about spam mail, what can I do to stop it coming through?
> much obliged, just searching for a lifeline solution.

You can set up a filter that discards (or moves to special folders)
mails in which your email address is not listed as recipient. This
will recognize a lot of junk, but also some newsletters and mails from
mailing lists. So, you've to set up some specific filters that keep
these messages.

Your question concerning spam was asked some days ago also in TBUDL.
Look in the mail archive - if you don't have the messages anymore -
for the thread 'Spam filter' by John Phillips.

You're right, this has to do with the reply template which is editable
in menu Account/Properties/Templates/Reply. There you'll probably find
something like %Cursor. Move this string wherever you want, before or
after %Quotes which is the macro to insert the original text quoted.

I hopefully may give you another hint: if you're replying, it is a
good thing not to quote the whole message, but only these phrases
you're commenting or answering. It's also ok, to insert the answers
right between some quotes.

Yes. Templates are used instead of signatures. This is more useful
because you can put text everywhere you want and also the cursor, not
only at the end like signatures. There are two kinds of templates:

  - Message templates that you can edit in Accounts properties/
  Templates.

  - Quick templates that you can embed whenever you like (Utilities/
Insert Quick templates/...). These templates you can create in menu
  Options/Quick templates.

Go to Utilities/Auto Format (Shift+Ctrl+F). If you want to have this
feature always enabled, go to Options/Editor preferences and enable
the 'AutoFormat' checkbox.

> Format Block. Three paragaphs became one and I had to create the

A paragraph is recognized by TB only if there is a blank line between
them.
So, this is an example for a 'uncorrect' paragraph.

TB is in some things a bit tricky and special, but if you're used to
them, you'll love it and never want to go back to Outlook, Mozilla and
all that crap.

Yes, but there are solutions:

  o Type the name and hit Ctrl+ + or Ctrl+ -

o Don't type the name but the recipient's handle. As soon as you

I've installed v1.48 now - and the import of a X.509 certificate does
not work, neither with 'import key' nor with 'add sender to address
book'.

Can someone confirm this? The import of a friend's Thawte certificate.
I got an encrypted email from him, but I'm not able to extract, fetch,
take out his key. Please help, thx!

PS: Perhaps someone can send me a signed mail, so I can try another
key...

Yes. Go to the address book and choose 'File/Open address book...'.
Then look for a file something.ABD in your backup directory and open
it. This will restore your addresses.

Hope, it works.

Because I consider this as a security bug. You easily hit enter... and
you open a program you didn't really want to run...

> Any one had any success in getting rid of these pests?

I've just programmed a mail filter which does his job quite well. It's
a perl script that is executed each time when a mail arrives. A
message is treated as spam if the sender's ip is listed in ORBS or
MAPS. So, it does for each time two requests (example ip: 1.2.3.4):

  host 4.3.2.1.blackholes.mail-abuse.org
  host 4.3.2.1.relays.orbs.org

If the ip 127.0.0.2 is returned, the probability is high that the
message is spam. Because I don't delete the message, but send it to
another address, I take no risks.

Additionally, I check the subjects for some suspect strings.

So, I let a script filter my mails *before* they arrive in my pop
account.

The dummy address should be available - else you'll receive an error
message from the mailer demon. If you put something like 'Just for
laughs', the mail server will try to reach the following addresses, if
your email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] , [EMAIL PROTECTED] , [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If these addresses exist, you've just sent your message to people that
you never heard of!

To avoid this, I always put something like this in the TO-field:
  Dear friends <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
(in which [EMAIL PROTECTED] is a real address that sends all
 received mails to /dev/null )

Thank you for your reply. I didn't read the TBBETA list because I was
lacking of time and so I didn't hear of the ongoing updates. But
perhaps I'll wait for v1.48 because I don't like beta's very much...

Importing a X.509 certificate...?

2000-12-09 Thread Beat Strasser

Hi there

I just got an email that was encryptet with S/Mime. I could decrypt it
easily, but I'm not able to import the sender's key! If it was a PGP
key, it would be no problem, but with the X.509 certificates from
Thawte, I didn't succeeded.

I also tried to save the message and to import it then in the address
book.

Other email clients are able to import keys from a received message.
Is the Bat! not able yet to import such a public key?

TIA.

Can't confirm this. I work with IE.

The problem that I've now with 1.42c is that using Shift and a double
click on a http link won't cause IE to open a new window anymore. No,
this is opening IE in my hex editor! Not really useful ;-)

Can't upgrade to new msg base format!

2000-05-07 Thread Beat Strasser

Hi there

I tried to upgrade from v1.41 to v1.42. Before, I copied the whole
Mail directory to another harddisk.

During the message base format convertion I get always an error
'Couldn't write to message base. Check if there's enough disk space in
Temp and Mail directory'. But I've 1.2GB free disk space on each
harddisk. This can't be the problem. Once I choosed the option 'Delete
old message file' and it worked some seconds longer, but then gives me
the same error.

It's always the same folder that causes this error (not the first). It
contains about 550 messages and 6 subfolders and was compressed on
each exit.

Now, I'm running v1.41 again. I was glad to upgrade because of all the
new features, now I'm kind of sad...

WHAT should I do? Please help. I'd be very grateful.
