Re: Synchronisation problem

2001-10-01 Thread Ciprian Tutu

K At that point, it seems that my notebook computer now has on it the
K new messages and folders from the desktop, but the filters are the
K same. For example, this weekend I added some new filters and modified
K some others. None of those filters or changes are on the notebook
K even though I afterwards synchronized as set forth above (all
K synchronization boxes were checked off so it isn't due to not checking
K off some boxes).

This happenned to me as well. I'm not sure, but it may be fixed in the
current beta version. You may want to check. My laptop just died on
me, so I cannot really test this now...

K Also, I notice that the synchronization *adds* new messages to the
K notebook Bat. It does not delete messages that I deleted on the
K desktop. For example, this weekend I read through about 1000 old

This is definitely the way it behaves. And it's a poor way to behave
especially since TB keeps track of _deleted_ messages as opposed to
messages that you never had, so it could easily do the deletion for
you. However, I don't complain too much about the deleted messages
because on my setup I delete them from server when I delete them from
TB so my other system, when connected will never read them (I never
have both my laptop and desktop read emails at the same time). Still,
the option would be really useful.

Another, more subtle problem, is filing the messages. I get all my
emails (except for mailing lists) in my inbox. I file it afterwards
depending on the topic, and I would like this filing to be
synchronized as well when I call synchronize. After sorting my
emails on the desktop, the synchronization to the laptop would add the
sorted messages in their rightfully folders, but it would not delete
them from the inbox (as they were moved). The remove all dupes
doesn't help either because it applies per folder not per account,
which would be another usefull option.

I guess I will send an email to the developers asking about these
options...

Re[2]: Synchronize features

2001-09-26 Thread Ciprian Tutu

CT 4. Can the synchronization be executed directly using a network
CT connection between the two clients?
A how is it done currently via direct local network? (I've never tried it)

Currently it's not done via local network. It's a 3-step process where
you first create an index of the account you want to update. Then you
bring this file over to the other computer and execute there step two
generating a file that incorporates the differences (actually the
additions only) that the second system has compared to the first one.
Finally you copy this file and apply it as the third step to your
initial system which will be updated.

I was thinking that it would be really cool to have the two clients
talk and execute this transfer without going through all these
steps. As I said, I realize this may introduce a lot of potential
problems and it means adding some capabilities that are not really
natural to a mail client. I will have to check how other systems
provide for synchronizing...

Re[2]: Synchronize features

CT 2. Could you add the possibility to synchronize the sorting filters as
CT well? I would rather set them up in one place (wherever I happen to be
CT as I need them) and then just update the other machine through
CT synchronization.

CT 3. Same for templates. Both system, folder and AB.

ACM This is already there. IF you look in the synchronisation panel.
ACM You'll see the options to synchronise AB and account properties.
ACM Templates are stored at various levels so if you synchronise the account
ACM properties, the quick templates will be synchronised. For folder
ACM templates, synchronising the folders will do this. For address book
ACM templates, synchronising the address book will do this.

ACM IOW's, you can completely synchronise the settings etc. I did this
ACM regularly between The Bat! and SecureBat! for some time.

How about the sorting filters. That is not really part of the account
settings nor the folder settings.

Also I generally avoid synchronizing the account properties. The
settings of a home/modem connection are quite different from those on
my laptop which sits on a lan. For instance I check the email every 2
min at work, but only every 5 or 10 at home.
I guess I can live with resetting that manually though. :)

Thanks,
Ciprian
