Unfortunately however whenever I try to
access my IMAP account at Fastmail The Bat! appears to complete all
the downloading and then crashes with an Access violation error.

As you've discovered, Bob, IMAP is still a "work in progress" in TB! I have
so many issues with performance, implementation and stability that I rarely
use the prog these days. For a better discussion of the current state of
IMAP take a deep breath and have a look at TBBETA.

Frankly, rather than implement yet another feature that won't

I have just responded to your other message. Some of us have to sleep

This happens here but it's probably one of the least frustrating bugs
in TB's current IMAP performance. It's probably the same phenomenon
that makes TB so slow at fetching and displaying IMAP messages and
part of the way the protocol is implemented in the prog.

Just another example of TB's still rough implementation of IMAP, I

I assume that I can have different folders on the server for day to
day filtering? And then selectively pull down emails that I feel need

to be on the local machine.

You can (should be able to) set up a folder structure on your server
much as you can with a POP account, depending on the capability of your
remote server. However, TB! has a number of problems defining and
administering new folders that have been aired here over a period of
time and it's one of the reasons I don't use TB! very much at the moment.

You can copy/drag individual emails to local folders, and if you've got
OE or Thunderbird on your system you'll see how easy it is to do but I
still don't see why you'd want to do it on a day-to-day basis.

I also like the idea of downloading mails from the server to a local

Ask yourself what would happen if your machine crashed or was stolen.
How would you rescue your mail? I certainly trust that my mail service
(FastMail) has a more robust backup system than I have!

For me, this is one of the great benefits of IMAP, the other being that
I can access identical mail structures from wherever I happen to be
without a lot of fiddly synchronisation every day.

Thanks, Martin, But the problem is that FastMail haven't changed the

This is my number one issue with TB and IMAP. I just wish Ritlabs
would accept that messages should be flagged as deleted (as Outlook,
Outlook Express, Mulberry etc do) and not just hide them from view.

When I'm using Mulberry I take the opportunity to tidy up deleted

The only issue I have with smilies is that it's impossible to ignore
the ):( type characters in the text - and that's just as annoying for
me as seeing the actual graphic (but maybe I am a grumpy old s*d as my

I'd be ecstatic if the next version of TB could filter these

Have a look at FastMail's features. Go to www.fastmail.fm and click the

with any account you set up and forward mail into and from your account
(POP only with paid accounts). Its web interface is quick and

I've just mentioned to Jim that FastMail or Mailsnare offer extremely
good POP, IMAP and forwarding facilities for external mail.

For me, the combination of FastMail and Mulberry, with mail from the odd
POP account I have being collected by FastMail, gives me all the benefits

If that works for you, Jim, fine. But if your system is designed to

to use a mail client (or web interface such as FastMail or MailSnare)

Managing IMAP folders

2004-04-28 Thread Clive Taylor
I've just come across an interesting little free prog that may help some
of you having problems with TB's IMAP working. Here's a description of
what the prog does:

"IMAPSize concentrates on providing means for maintaining your IMAP
accounts, rather than using them. If you are using an IMAP client that
offers less features than the main players, you will find IMAPSize very
handy (if not necessary...). IMAPSize also offers some features not
found in other clients (e.g. the attachment deletion area, global
searches, etc).

It's a late alpha - but stable - can be downloaded here:

I know this topic must be boring the pants off non IMAP users but

I've been using Mulberry for all my domain traffic exclusively for a
month now and I'm sooo impressed with the way it handles IMAP (I know
you've experienced performance probs but it's fine here). What I miss
about TB! are some of the little functions I've been taking for granted,
though. Things like the ability to reformat quotes in replied messages,
the address book, the interface, the editor (really!).

The bottom line though, is that I can rely on the prog: it works without
any drama and I can get on with my work.

TB! is now relegated to POP list-traffic type operations where I don't
require constant access to the information. Shame really, but I'll
persevere with updating TB in the hope this area improves. What I won't
do though is pay for another upgrade to access a set of features that
don't work!

With focus on the folder you wish to purge, go Folder|Compress.

Sorry, had a brain slip. There’s no right click option for this.
Instead go folder|compress with the focus on the folder you want to
operate on.

Have you tried running folder|compress on the individual folder (right
click option)?

IMAP is not well implemented in TB so far this version. I regard it as
work in progress and have given up using it until the various issues,
some of which you describe here, are resolved (which I'm sure they
will be in due course).

It works here. How are you copying and pasting the address, ctrl+C,
ctrl+v?

Hi Melissa,

Nope. F2 does check the current account. F3 does diddly squat except
when invoked from the dropdown menu.

I've found by experimenting though that F11 *does* work. Strange.

Odd. F3 does nothing from my keyboard yet, from the dropdown menu
(next to the 'get new mail' icon), F3 is there and the command works!

You don't need a password for V2. The easiest way to ensure you are
entering the right key and checksum is make sure the email containing
these details is open and go to help|registration code.

You'll find the details are filled in for you.

You couldn't be more wrong, Vishal.

I provide support and training for home-based PC users, 95% of whom are
on dial-up around here.

I can tell you that it doesn't make a jot of difference how they
connect - the vulnerable ones who contract viruses and worms are those
who don't or won't install or update their AV progs or Windows.

End of story.

It's not your authorisation details for the news server, is it? That's
the only other area that could be wrong, as far as I can see.

Yes. I'm sure they are, but HERE MyMail won't work other than with
110. It might be a firewall issue (but I don't think so) but it works
as is!

I had the same problem and found that I could get MyGate to work only
by setting the local port to 110 in both TB and MyGate (NNTP on 119).
Any other combinations just wouldn't work.
