To be fair to the plugins, I rescan a significant amount of spam and
ham. I save all spam from my various accounts and rescan the last
couple of months. I do the same for my received messages both personal
mail and list mail. I never have to do this for SpamPal, which seems
to work right out of the box.

What I've noticed is even after a couple of weeks, the performance
never seems to improve. At least this is my personal experience.
Typically I'll get 50-60 spam/day between my various mail accounts. On
the plus side, the plugins seem pretty good at not erroneously tagging
ham as spam.

I've never tried K9 but from what I've read its similar to SpamPal. I
run SpamPal along with GPGrelay without any problems.

Specify the "Remote Server" in GPGrelay and not The Bat!

In The Bat!:

 POP server = localhost
 POP port = 110
 User field = [EMAIL PROTECTED]:yyy

Where xxx would be your full email address including the "@" sign.
After the colon would be the same port number that you declare for
local port in your GPGrelay.

ie: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@localhost:6110

Realistically I don't think I would rely on any AV software to be my
sole defence. While its true you often get what you pay for, I think a
reasonable defence can be built for free. Not all AV programs are
effective for intercepting spyware. If one uses several product some
reasonable wall of protection can be built.

ie: router
software firewall
MS Antispyware (active)
Spybot SD (resident)
SpywareGuard
SpywareBlaster

Ad-Aware with frequent scans
Firefox

All should be updated frequently and scanners should be run on a
regular schedule.

It also helps to use a free utility like Active Ports to examine which
software is using inbound/outbound ports. If wireless, something like
AirSnare is useful for ensuring no unauthorized systems are connected.

Most of us spend a fair amount of money on our hardware and Internet
access. Buying a decent AV package should be part of the process. Yes,
you can do it for free, but is it worth the risk?

I would still use the auxiliary measures listed above no matter what
AV I selected. In today's world, there's no such thing as too safe.

I've been receiving these daily for a couple of weeks now (on another

Mozilla/Thunderbird users have Enigmail which allows assigning keys
even though no matching e-mail address is contained. GPGrelay will do
the same thing. These programs perform key management functions.

Unfortunately The Bat! needs a matching e-mail address both on the
sending (signing and/or encrypting) and recipient side (when
encrypting).

You will have to add another UserID to your existing key containing
the new e-mail address. Unless RIT changes things, there must be a
matching e-mail address somewhere in the key. I hope they consider
adding this key management feature. Until then, you're stuck using the
GPGShell or PGP Tray Tool to sign or encrypt with this new address.

You are correct in that GPGrelay requires GPG and runs as a relay. Its
been quite awhile since I converted from PGP to GPG and honestly, I
haven't missed PGP.

One thing I appreciate about GPGrelay is that both the mail in my Sent
folder and any inbound mail are decrypted. This makes text searches
possible, and eliminates the worry about keeping old expired or
revoked keys in my keyring.

Its also quite convenient having a GPG manager. No matter which mail
client I send from, recipients inlined or PGP/MIME preferences are
respected. I don't have to think about it.

I never understood why RIT removed this feature. While I can
appreciate that some people need to keep things encrypted, many of us
have our own method of securing the data. Not giving the client a
choice didn't seem prudent. In my case, it drove me to seek a 3rd
party solution.

Currently as of v3.0.1 RC5 TB still does not offer an option to save
decrypted messages. If this is a major annoyance, consider using
GPGrelay. It works well here.

I've used SpamPal for quite some time and really like it. I've
experimented with BayesIt and Bayes Filter. The plug in idea is
appealing, not having to run a relay and having the spam solution more
self contained. I never received the accuracy of SpamPal with either
of these solutions. Not to mention the stability problems that recent
BayesIt versions have had.

I use the Bayesian Filter, P2P, RegExFilter and URLBody plugins with
SpamPal. It never misclassifies good messages as spam and rarely
misses spam. On the rare miss, I can open the reclassify window to
learn the missed spam. It works very well upon initial setup.

There is an older version of FreePOPs that supports SSL. I used it and

I believe the default also comes with plugins for Hotmail and Yahoo. I

I haven't spent any time with the Web interface. All of my mail

There are two way that I'm aware of.

FreePOPS
http://freepops.sourceforge.net/en/

gPopper
http://www.imizzy.com/gpopper/

Both are relays that you insert between The Bat! and Gmail. Both will
allow you to download your Gmail directly into an account that you
setup in TB. Only gPopper supports SMTP. With FreePOPs you'll have to
use an alternate method of delivery like one of the small SMTP servers
or your ISP.

- From tests that I've done recently, only FreePOPs will preserve the
message integrity allowing inlined or PGP/MIME message to be
downloaded and decrypted without difficulty. The current release of
gPopper changes the message content enough to alter PGP data. Whether
or not GPG/PGP compatibility is important, is up to you. I'm currently
using FreePOPS because I do use GPG.

For the most part, I kept the defaults in the filter itself. I did set
up a white list that included my mailing lists and my own addresses. I
changed the directory structure so BayesFilter and its logs and files
reside under /The Bat!. I found this makes it easier to clone my
notebook to my desktop using the 7zip archiver and a batch file. I
move suspected junk mail to the junk folder, rather than delete it.
This facilitates forwarding junk to SpamCop.

This isn't a keyserver but a mail robot. Melissa just created a mail
account called pgp_keys on gmx. Using The Bat's filtering mechanism,
if received mail to that address contains the required Subject and

After reading this thread I can begin to appreciate how undesirable
these C/R systems can be. While spam is definitely annoying, with
BayesIT or the many other solutions that work with The Bat!, C/R
simply isn't necessary. In this case, the solution seems worse than

Thanks for the background information. I'm not a fan of the C/R
philosophy. It seems much too annoying when controlling spam can
simply be resolved by having an efficient spam filtering system. Why
place the burden of controlling one's spam on their contacts? The few
people who I've attempted to e-mail who use this method I give up on.

After reading your message, the C/R methodology appears even more
annoying than I initially thought. The fact that RiskFreeMail is
unresponsive to complaints is particularly troublesome. I can just
envision flocks of the bored setting up temporary accounts with the
sole purpose of annoying list users and moderators.

I'm glad your probes found the culprit and hope there's a way to
prevent this type of problem from surfacing again.

I've ironed out my problems but not without some difficulty. I had 7
accounts with Thawte certificates, none expired. 2 accounts seemed
functional but nothing I did could massage the other 5 back to life.
Exporting again from Windows and re-importing into The Bat! didn't
work. Then I tried re-downloading from the Thawte site. Unfortunately,
I would get errors when trying import a copy of the certificates back
into IE from the Thawte site. I'm not sure what that was about, as the
message was not very descriptive. I'm assuming it was an error on the
Thawte site.

Rather than wait for a tech support answer, I went to CACert and
requested certificates for my 7 email addresses. Everything worked
fine and I imported into IE and eventually into my accounts in The
Bat! without any difficulties.

I did find something curious when examining each account's personal
certificates. 2 accounts had both mine and the issuers certificate as
you suggested. The other 5 only showed my certificate. I sent test
messages using all the accounts and everything seems to work. I just
am curious why all the accounts don't have or seem to need the issuers
certificate in the edit window. Perhaps it finds what it needs in the
Intermediate CA or Trusted Root CA address book. I'm also wondering
why all of this stopped working in the first place. As I've always
used The Bat's internal s/mime implementation, all the Cert
information should be independent of the Windows Cert store so any
problems shouldn't be Windows related. I've never changed the account
properties for the Certs since the last time when they were working.

Oh well, everything is working now. Let's hope it stays that way. Its
no wonder why I stick to PGP. :)

If I understand you correctly, in order to synchronize fully I must

After doing the above, most of the accounts on each system have the

I find the "mid:"; info useful when reading replies, but the gmane

handle this. I always liked this feature in The Bat.

I suppose that I could use pgp/mime like you have here and then the

I also use SpamPal with the Bayesian and URLBody plugins. Out of
curiosity, I switched to the BayesIT plugin for awhile (2 months). It
took about a week or so before it was trained sufficiently to detect
spam. After another couple of weeks it was successfully intercepting
most of the spam with no false positives. Every so often polling for
mail would hang but temporarily disabling BayesIT would resolve the
problem, so I think there was a definite correlation. It was
convenient not having to run another relay like SpamPal, as everything
was almost self contained with The Bat!/BayesIT combo. In spite of
this advantage, I still went back to SpamPal. I think SpamPal's
additional advantage of using DNSBL public blacklists makes the
difference between catching most of the spam vs all of the spam. I've
never had any false positives with SpamPal either. For me, SpamPal
seems to be a more thorough solution.

I did some experimenting and found that you can export a PGP encrypted
message (either inlined or pgp/mime) to a file in the Unix mailbox
format.

Edit the exported file with a text editor and _cut_ the PGP portions
to the clipboard where you can use GPG or PGP Tray to decrypt it.

Paste the decrypted text back into the exported file and save your
changes. Then you can use the Tools menu to import the updated Unix
file back into the message base.

The end result is a decrypted message complete with the kludges.

Although this method is certainly more labor intensive than using the
Memo field, it produces what I wish The Bat! could do automatically.

Hello TBUDL!

When reading unread messages in a folder, my place gets lost when new
mail arrives in that folder if automatic downloading is configured.
Its quite time consuming to try and find the message I was reading as
it is flagged as read and lost from view.

Ideally it would be nice if the message being viewed stayed in the
preview pane when new messages arrive. If this can't be done, perhaps
temporarily suspending automated downloads for the account in focus
until the focus is moved to another account would help. This may not
be desirable if a person has only one email account, so a
configuration switch would be helpful.

Just a thought.

I had this happen occasionally with the BayesIT plugin. When it
occurred. I had to kill The Bat! just like you.

Aside from that occasional problem, BayesIT worked fairly well. It
never classified spam incorrectly, but would occasionally miss new
spam until trained. Now that the spammers are adding new words to
confuse Bayesian filters, the amount of spam to be trained is
increasing. I found this inconvenient.

To make a long story short, I went back to the SpamPal that I had used
previously. I think that SpamPal's DNSBL lists filtering in
conjunction with its Bayesian and URL Body plug-ins is more effective
in intercepting almost everything. The net result is less work for me.
I also don't have the hang up problem that I did experience with
BayesIT.

The downside is that you have to run another relay and the self
contained nature of the BayesIT plug-in (easy to backup within the
bat) is lost.

I believe that the spammers already have this capability. The majority
of the spam I receive claims to be generated with Outlook or Outlook
Express. Perhaps they prefer an email client more HTML oriented.

As The Bat! is already considered by some as a spammer's tool (url
below) I really don't think that it makes a difference. I just wonder
why Outlook or OE isn't considered in the same category.

In any event, filtering spam based on x-mailer or user-agent headers
isn't an effective way to combat spam. Perhaps if more email clients
allowed x-mailer "adjustments" this ridiculous banning based solely on
email client used would be eliminated.

I'm not sure what "Habeus headers" are but you can create customized
header this way:

"Options|Preferences|Message Headers" Menu

Press the Add button

In the pop up box

Display this header field as=X-blablabla
RFC Name=x-blablabla
This field is an address list=off
Allow to edit this field in the Message Editor=on
Display this field on the scrollable part of the header pane=on

Save your changes

In your New Message and Reply Templates (on either account, group,
address book level), place the following:

%SETHEADER("X-blablabla","this is the blablabla displayed data")%-

If you would like to see this header if its contained in a message in
your preview pane Header Box, go to "View|Message Headers" and place a
check by your newly created header.

Good luck.

Some versions of pgp didn't have rsa support. You didn't specify which

I can't take credit for the web page which was downloaded from the
Files area of the Yahoo PGP-Basics home page. That's a good mailing
list for those interested in learning how to use pgp.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PGP-Basics/

The headers are created by GPGrelay, which is the relay I use to
handle all of my pgp functions.

http://sites.inka.de/tesla/gpgrelay.html

The Bat! can create the same custom headers with some limitations. The
most significant being a limit the length of the custom header, so
long lines for url paths may truncate. I hope they fix that.

I'm guessing that your pgp software is trying to download my key from

available for download on a web page (see signature line below).

After writing the last message, I disabled my newly created DSA test
key and re-enabled my problematic RSA key. The strange thing is, the
RSA key started working. Go figure.

During the midst of this testing I intentionally deleted /The
Bat!/MAIL/PGP.INI file which is where I thought cached pgp pass
phrases resided. I did this to ensure an old pass phrase wasn't
causing my problem. I still had the problem even after restarting The
Bat!, so that didn't appear to be the cure.

Now the "gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available" problem
seems resolved, but I would like to understand why it occurred in the
first place, and what fixed it. By the lack of responses here, I'm
assuming nobody else has experienced this problem.

Open PGP Problem

2003-10-18 Thread Kevin Coates
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello TBUDL!

Normally I use GPGrelay to handle pgp functions but while
experimenting with The Bat's built in open pgp support I have been
experiencing a problem. Specifically this error message appears when
attempting to sign or encrypt and sign:

gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available
gpg: [stdin]: sign+encrypt failed: secret key not available

This occurs using GnuPG. I installed the key into PGP 8.0.2 and
selected that PGP version in The Bat! and no problems occurred signing
or encrypting.

This problem only occurred in 1 of my several email accounts. They all
have different keys. The only difference I noticed was that the key on
the problematic account is an RSA key. I temporarily disabled that key
and created a DSA key with the same email address. The Bat! encrypted
and signed without a problem.

This leads me to believe that there is a problem using GnuPG RSA keys
with The Bat's open pgp handler.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any comments or
suggestions?

I just tried another test. The results were rather strange. I started
downloading and my temp folder went from 6 files to 6032 after the
download. These are bat.tmp files, all zero bytes. During the
download it said there were 17.7 megs of messages. After the download
I had 64 new messages all text (no binaries) and certainly not 17 megs
worth of data.

The Bat! has been downloading mail to the other accounts for an hour
or so before the test so the tmp files must be from the MyGate process
as that is configured to run manually.

I do have this account in The Bat! configured to delete downloaded
messages from the server.

I will check the X-MyGate-MID on the dups with the next download.

old.

My problem is that even though I have downloaded these messages,
MyGate periodically downloads them again. I'm not sure if this is
because the Sept posts look new to MyGate, even though they are from
Sept of last year. (Running The Bat! Folder Maintenance finds these
dups and deletes them.)

I also noticed that the "c:\documents and settings\user\local
settings\temp" directory was filling up with a tremendous amount of
bat.tmp files *only* after MyGate ran. I think when I noticed this
I had over 10,000 of them! Attempts to delete these files would fail
as long as MyGate was loaded in the tray. I believe MyGate still
retains some r/w access even though the downloading is finished.

Has anyone else reported something similar? Any suggestions?

Perhaps the capability to modify the X-Mailer header should be added.
Its unfortunate that some poorly implemented spam software has
erroneously categorized The Bat! I can understand how RIT is proud of
their product and would prefer to have it announced in the header, but
knowing that email can be blocked because of it certainly can't help
sales. The Bat! is powerful enough to do many things, having to run a
utility like Xray to ensure your mail gets through, seems an
unnecessary burden on the user.

Outlook doesn't support pgp/mime. I've experimented with it and found
the only way to get Outlook to work with pgp/mime is to use GPGrelay.
Then all is well. This would require the recipient having both
GPGrelay and GnuPG installed. Another alternative is sending pgp
messages signed/encrypted in-line. Any attached files would have to be

including the whole message in addition to your inline response, you
are doubling the bandwidth. As long as you keep messages in your

I've had the same concerns but I think because so many people were
affected, blacklisting seems unlikely. I think most isp people
understand that the mails are probably not from the source they appear
to be. Had it been a smaller outbreak, the blacklisting threat would
probably be possible.

JN> I assume this must be a fairly common problem, but there just

I don't think there is much anyone can do. I suppose one could change
their email address, but that would only be temporary until the next
version comes out.

I don't know what else can be done other than trying to educate those
who are oblivious to security. People like to blame MSoft, but many of
those I talk to who are infected are the same people I talked to who
were infected by something else in the past. They haven't changed
their clicking habits, virus signature update frequency, or system
security. The unfortunate part is that we all suffer.

My oldest mail account with bigfoot.com has been rendered useless. It
has a forwarding quota which has been exceeded daily for a couple of
weeks with all the sobig related mails. Fortunately I migrated
everything to a new address several months ago.

I feel sorry for those on a dialup connection as downloading the
garbage mail must be really annoying, time consuming and costly.

Who knows where all of this will lead. I'm not encouraged. :( Perhaps
this would be a good topic for the TBOT list. I'd be interested to
hear any suggestions.

Under SpamPal Options/Message Tagging my preference is to *not* check
"Mark subject lines.." or "Display X-SpamPal: header in subject
lines." This way SpamPal puts the classification information in the
message's hidden kludge area. I think it looks less tacky this way.

If you create a filter in The Bat to look for "^X-SpamPal: SPAM"
(minus the quotes) in the kludge or anywhere you can move the messages
to your spam folder automatically. Erroneously classified mail (if you
have any) will still have the altered kludge, but it won't be in the
Subject field which would look rather annoying.

If you place your SpamPal filter after your mailing list filters, and
your Known filter (people in your address books), I think you'll find
little if any erroneously classified spam. You might get an occasional
unrecognized spam that you can easily add to the Bayesian plug-in.

I've been running SpamPal for a few months and honestly don't recall
any mail erroneously classified as spam. I might get 1 or 2
unrecognized spam each week and average 45-50 spam/day.

To have your signature appear light gray and also allow replies to
strip your signature automatically the delimiter must have 1 space
following the dashes. (ie: "-- " not "--", minus the quotes)

I'm not exactly sure what you are attempting but I'm assuming you want
to post processing prior to the mail leaving your system. If that's
the case, I do something similar by having sent mail go through
GPGrelay, which handles pgp functions and then ADR which does the
actually delivery to the recipient.

Configuration is just a matter of assigning the word "localhost" as
the SMTP (aka Remote) server name (in my case in both The Bat and
GPGrelay) and ensuring that I assign ports that match the flow path.

For example:

The Bat SMTP port 725

GPGRelay Local Port 725
 Remote port 25

Advanced Direct Remailer port 25

Yes, one does have to keep all the messages. I don't tend to do that
in all of the lists. Whenever a new beta is released, I usually keep
everything for awhile in TBBeta and the "mid:"; certainly makes
referencing a snap .. assuming the poster includes one. :)

I haven't had to use the archives in awhile, but your idea sounds
quite useful.

Normally I just call my acquaintances or leave them voice mail.
Occasionally a quick message is best. I just hope that the spammers
don't ruin that media as well.

I don't own a palm device, but I do see their merit. I just wouldn't
have time to use one at work but friends who are in sales find them
indispensable. So does that mean you wont be downloading any binary
mp3s from the usenet newsgroups? hehehe

The Bat's filters, particularly when allowing those in your address
book, can isolate all spam. The downside is that mail from new
contacts will end up in the spam folder. I found that I still had to
look at the spam in order to sift out wanted mail.

Currently I am using SpamPal with the Bayesian plug-in available here:

http://www.spampal.org/

It matches against DNSBL lists (you can pick which ones) and in
conjunction with the plug-in catches almost all the spam, while
allowing new mail through. It seems to be a better arrangement for me
than using Bat filters exclusively. The Bayesian filter is trainable
and after a short time I'd say it catches 99% of the spam. I average
between 35-40 spam messages/day, so this freeware tool is quite
helpful to me.

Like you, I do report all spam to SpamCop. I don't know why. It
doesn't cut down on the amount of spam, but somehow I feel better
doing something. :)
