To be fair to the plugins, I rescan a significant amount of spam and ham. I save all spam from my various accounts and rescan the last couple of months. While its true you often get what you pay for, I think a reasonable defence can be built for free. Not all AV programs are effective for intercepting spyware. If one uses several product some reasonable wall of protection can be built. ie: router software firewall MS Antispyware (active) Spybot SD (resident) SpywareGuard SpywareBlaster Ad-Aware with frequent scans Firefox All should be updated frequently and scanners should be run on a regular schedule. It also helps to use a free utility like Active Ports to examine which software is using inbound/outbound ports. Its been quite awhile since I converted from PGP to GPG and honestly, I haven't missed PGP. One thing I appreciate about GPGrelay is that both the mail in my Sent folder and any inbound mail are decrypted. This makes text searches possible, and eliminates the worry about keeping old expired or revoked keys in my keyring. Its also quite convenient having a GPG manager. Why place the burden of controlling one's spam on their contacts? The few people who I've attempted to e-mail who use this method I give up on. I had 7 accounts with Thawte certificates, none expired. 2 accounts seemed functional but nothing I did could massage the other 5 back to life. Exporting again from Windows and re-importing into The Bat! didn't work. Then I tried re-downloading from the Thawte site. Unfortunately, I would get errors when trying import a copy of the certificates back into IE from the Thawte site. I'm not sure what that was about, as the message was not very descriptive. I'm assuming it was an error on the Thawte site. Rather than wait for a tech support answer, I went to CACert and requested certificates for my 7 email addresses. Everything worked fine and I imported into IE and eventually into my accounts in The Bat! without any difficulties. I did find something curious when examining each account's personal certificates. 2 accounts had both mine and the issuers certificate as you suggested. The other 5 only showed my certificate. I sent test messages using all the accounts and everything seems to work. I just am curious why all the accounts don't have or seem to need the issuers certificate in the edit window. Perhaps it finds what it needs in the Intermediate CA or Trusted Root CA address book. I'm also wondering why all of this stopped working in the first place. As I've always used The Bat's internal s/mime implementation, all the Cert information should be independent of the Windows Cert store so any problems shouldn't be Windows related. I also use SpamPal with the Bayesian and URLBody plugins. Out of curiosity, I switched to the BayesIT plugin for awhile (2 months). It took about a week or so before it was trained sufficiently to detect spam. After another couple of weeks it was successfully intercepting most of the spam with no false positives. Every so often polling for mail would hang but temporarily disabling BayesIT would resolve the problem, so I think there was a definite correlation. It was convenient not having to run another relay like SpamPal, as everything was almost self contained with The Bat!/BayesIT combo. In spite of this advantage, I still went back to SpamPal. I think SpamPal's additional advantage of using DNSBL public blacklists makes the difference between catching most of the spam vs all of the spam. I've never had any false positives with SpamPal either. Edit the exported file with a text editor and _cut_ the PGP portions to the clipboard where you can use GPG or PGP Tray to decrypt it. Paste the decrypted text back into the exported file and save your changes. Then you can use the Tools menu to import the updated Unix file back into the message base. Its quite time consuming to try and find the message I was reading as it is flagged as read and lost from view. If this can't be done, perhaps temporarily suspending automated downloads for the account in focus until the focus is moved to another account would help. Open PGP Problem
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello TBUDL! Normally I use GPGrelay to handle pgp functions but while experimenting with The Bat's built in open pgp support I have been experiencing a problem. Specifically this error message appears when attempting to sign or encrypt and sign: gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available gpg: [stdin]: sign+encrypt failed: secret key not available This occurs using GnuPG. I installed the key into PGP 8.0.2 and selected that PGP version in The Bat! and no problems occurred signing or encrypting. This problem only occurred in 1 of my several email accounts. They all have different keys. The only difference I noticed was that the key on the problematic account is an RSA key. I temporarily disabled that key and created a DSA key with the same email address. The Bat! encrypted and signed without a problem. This leads me to believe that there is a problem using GnuPG RSA keys with The Bat's open pgp handler. People like to blame MSoft, but many of those I talk to who are infected are the same people I talked to who were infected by something else in the past. They haven't changed their clicking habits, virus signature update frequency, or system security. The unfortunate part is that we all suffer. My oldest mail account with bigfoot.com has been rendered useless. It has a forwarding quota which has been exceeded daily for a couple of weeks with all the sobig related mails. Fortunately I migrated everything to a new address several months ago. I feel sorry for those on a dialup connection as downloading the garbage mail must be really annoying, time consuming and costly. Who knows where all of this will lead. Under SpamPal Options/Message Tagging my preference is to *not* check "Mark subject lines.." or "Display X-SpamPal: header in subject lines." This way SpamPal puts the classification information in the message's hidden kludge area. I think it looks less tacky this way. If you create a filter in The Bat to look for "^X-SpamPal: SPAM" (minus the quotes) in the kludge or anywhere you can move the messages to your spam folder automatically. Erroneously classified mail (if you have any) will still have the altered kludge, but it won't be in the Subject field which would look rather annoying. If you place your SpamPal filter after your mailing list filters, and your Known filter (people in your address books), I think you'll find little if any erroneously classified spam. You might get an occasional unrecognized spam that you can easily add to the Bayesian plug-in. I've been running SpamPal for a few months and honestly don't recall any mail erroneously classified as spam. I might get 1 or 2 unrecognized spam each week and average 45-50 spam/day. - -- Kevin Coates Dewitt, NY USA X-Request-PGP: http://www.kcoates.com/0x434798B9.htm Using TB! v2.0 Beta/5 under Windows XP 5.1.2600 SP1 . -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- iD8DBQE/TYfjRbTFvUNHmLkRAhKhAKDrMPb9l4FH4ozBcScEiqcYn6UwHgCgrwxz bJCw1sHM03PEq7it8088r8A= =nLio -END PGP SIGNATURE- Current version is 1.62r | "Using TBUDL" information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

The Bat's filters, particularly when allowing those in your address book, can isolate all spam. The downside is that mail from new contacts will end up in the spam folder. I found that I still had to look at the spam in order to sift out wanted mail. Currently I am using SpamPal with the Bayesian plug-in available here: http://www.spampal.org/ It matches against DNSBL lists (you can pick which ones) and in conjunction with the plug-in catches almost all the spam, while allowing new mail through. It seems to be a better arrangement for me than using Bat filters exclusively. The Bayesian filter is trainable and after a short time I'd say it catches 99% of the spam. I average between 35-40 spam messages/day, so this freeware tool is quite helpful to me. Like you, I do report all spam to SpamCop. I don't know why.
