Re: Version 3, POP3 and the number of messages sitting on the server..

2004-09-02 Thread Martyn Drake
Well, there is definately a problem with the way The Bat! deals with
the number of messages as I've just set-up another account which has a
fair number of messages on the server and it's just sitting there
doing nothing. Whether this occurs only for new account set-ups or
whether this will happen when I have large number of messages on the
server later down the road I just don't know..

Version 3, POP3 and the number of messages sitting on the server..

2004-09-02 Thread Martyn Drake
Have just purchased version 3 (probably against my better judgement,
but one can only hope things get better - right? ).

I decided on a completely clean set-up and once again encountered the
problem of connection problems (see my previous posting to TBUDL about
this) via POP3 when I set-up my second POP3 account. The Bat! just
hung when "Checking the number of messages.." and I couldn't abort or
delete the task. The only way out was to use Task Manager to kill the
whole thing. I tried turning off TLS/secure connections, changing the
authentication types to Regular and so on. Nothing would fix it.

I've since discovered that the ONLY way around the problem was to log
in via webmail and delete all of the messages (637) from that account.
The Bat! seemed happy with that and I can now check my second POP3
account again. And it's receiving new messages just fine now.
However, I should have had to do that.

Another problem - tried to import Outlook 2003 messages and The Bat!
happily created the folders but didn't actually import any messages.
Needless to say I've sent in a Bug report via the Help -> Feedback
option on both occasions.

Martyn

Simple questions (I hope!) about version 3..

2004-09-02 Thread Martyn Drake
Hi,

A couple of (I hope) easy questions to answer. Still trialing The Bat!
version 3. Firstly, just how do I get to view remote images in HTML
documents as it isn't doing so at the moment and I'll be darned if I can
find a switch/toggle that allows me to do this.

Secondly - is there a way to program the check mail button to check ALL mail
accounts rather than having to do the drop down menu and select 'check all'
or press ALT-F2?

Martyn

The question is - when will the Micro Ed editor have the ability to
properly re-flow quoted text without the need to use the justify left
(ALT-L) keyboard shortcut?

It's irritating when an email client (not just The Bat!) doesn't do it
for you - more so in Thunderbird than any other client. When you do
Rewrap (or ALT-L in The Bat!) it does it wonderfully - but why can't it
do this when you hit the Reply button so that the user is left with a
beautifully formatted email ready to reply to? :)

SSL cert store in The Bat! 3?

2004-09-01 Thread Martyn Drake
Well, I think I've figured out what the cause of the problem was with
The Bat! version 3 not being able to pick up mail from my cPanel server
earlier this morning.

As the certificate contains a different host name to that what I'm using
for the server, I must have somehow just clicked 'continue' without
adding the certificate to The Bat! and consequently it was getting
confused. However, I'm unable to find any certificate store/settings
within the program to make amendments to what I've already approved.

I've hijacked another account within this set-up, changed the server's
hostname to an aliased name within DNS and chose the regular setting.
I'm able to pick up my mail just fine.

Is there an email address which I could send this to at Ritlabs for
their inspection/support (and yes, I'm sure I'm going to get back
responses which states "good luck" or of similar ilk ;)).

It still has a few annoying issues, such as I can't touch any messages in
the Outbox once I've sent/queued up messages - if I try to do so I can't
send it at all without deleting it from the Outbox and starting again. And
this is with Office 2003 Service Pack 1 as well!

I think that's a bit harsh - I wouldn't wish anybody to be unemployed.
People do have the choice whether or not to buy it - the upgrade is not
being forced down anybody's throats.

I joined this list because I saw the announcement and thought - perhaps they
fixed the smart word wrapping/justification issues within the Micro Ed text
editor and also fixed some of the other issues that put me off using version
1.x so many years ago. I downloaded and thought the new interface looked
quite good, but still pretty clumsy. It is an improvement, however - at
least to me. Whilst the word wrapping problem still persists, the overall
interface improvements since 1.x and a few other bits and bobs almost made
me reach for my credit card. What stopped me? The flipping thing doesn't
pick up mail at all from my cPanel POP3 server, but it does from my MDaemon
box. I've tried regular and both STARTTLS and SSL connections but the POP3
connection always fails. I've tried it on two different workstations now
and it still doesn't work. Thus I've confined TheBat! to the bin.

These days I use a combination of Outlook 2003 (eeew I know - but somewhat
more managable with the Outlook Quotefix program) and Barca and/or PocoMail
(http://www.pocosystems.com). It's well supported and works well (IMHO).

In the message composition window, select the View menu and then choose

D'oh - didn't finish that sentance off properly. I was suggesting
that perhaps it might be a better idea to put that option somewhere
like the Options menu or perhaps have an Message Preferences menu
under the Options menu, so that all settings that affect the message
window can be found in one place to offer consistancy between making
Bat-wide options to the message window rather than having to do it all
through an open message window.

I hope that makes some sort of sense to someone :)

The unusual aspect of it all was that my archived copy of The Bat! 1.39
was running just fine under Windows 2000 when I decided to start from
scratch and import all of my old Outlook stuff over which is slightly
more up-to-date than what I had with The Bat! That's when the problems
started.

I will do another clean install of Win2k at some stage with a
completely clean install of The Bat!. If that doesn't go well, then
I've wasted 16 UK pounds for a product that has potential compatibility
problems with Win2k. I've currently purchased and am using PMMail 2000
which is currently working well for me.

For the most part, things are running extremely smoothly under Win2k,
but I just can explain what the heck has happened with my copy of The

Misc. problems & Windows 2000

2000-03-20 Thread Martyn Drake

I'm not entirely sure what I've done to my Windows 2000 systems, but
I'm having a tremendous time trying to persaude The Bat! to import
messages from Outlook Express 5.0 or Eudora Light 3.06.

Whenever I try to import more than one folder, The Bat! does absolutely
nothing. It appears to work just fine when I import one folder at a
time, but this is extremely tedius. Also, whenever I try to alter an
account's properties, the folder icons that appear to each catergory
are missing.

I've suffered problems with checking mail - The Bat! just locks up and
even restarting the machine and re-opening The Bat! brings up a blank
screen with just the top menu options, but no message base, nothing.

I've tried uninstalling, deleting the RIT entries in the registry,
nuking The Bat! Program Files directory, plus all of them in one go,
and absolutely nothing gets around the problems described above. I've
tried this with 1.36, 1.38 and 1.41 to no avail. I did have 1.42/Beta
1 and 1.42/Beta 2 on these systems (BTW, I can reproduce these on two
different Windows 2000 systems) if that would suggest any problems with
my uninstalling techniques ;)

Can anybody suggest a way of getting The Bat! to work once again on my
system? I'm currently hitting my head against a large frying pan in
frustration ;)

I agree with that. I finished with Eudora Pro 4.x as they refused to
acknowledge genuine bugs and fix them, the integration with Internet
Explorer was terrible and it's a beast of a program now.

I needed to find a client which handled "proper" quoting, had decent
WYSIWYG word wrapping, the ability to open a seperate reading window
per message (plus the ability for said window to stay in the same
place each and every time), and support multiple accounts. Oh, and it
had to be cheap :)

The Bat! has lived up to that criteria and added so many other decent
features I would gladly recommend this program to anyone.

Auto-wrap of incoming text revisited

2000-01-09 Thread Martyn Drake

Just to clarify things for my tiny mind - if the auto-wrap option is
ticked within Options -> Editor Preferences, all incoming mail should
be wrapped regardless of window size? Does this option have any

Any suggestions to help diagnose this problem is greately apreciated.
