Is there a way to change the character at the beginning of a reply line (">")?
Perhaps disable it or use a different character?

I'm not an expert on these things, but my guess is the server is telling TB
that your POP session is locked and it's just relaying the message. I'd check
out the server side. Maybe the last session you run at night is staying locked

It's a preference thing. I can easily see the arrow at the top of the column
to know what column is sorted. In addition, it wreaks havoc on my VNC session.

Just for clarification... In your message list viewer, you can sort messages
by a column. I would think most people sort by date (either Created or
Received). So whatever column you sort by has a distinctive shade to it so it
stands out as the column that you have chosen to sort by. Hopefully that made
sense.

Then create a virtual folder that will list all flagged messages in

For now, I am saving it as a draft and then marking it as unread

This keeps it consistent with the other folders where the folder only
displays bold if there is a message that has not been read. The Outbox
only displays bold if there is a message that has not been sent, and
not just if it contains a message. Folders that contain messages that
are read do not display bold.
I understand. I'm a busy person and always running in a lot of

for me to be completed and sent to a recipient. I saw the feature in

Re: Date of a sent message ?

2004-10-26 Thread Mike Dillinger
Message from "Roelof Otten" on 10/25/04 05:21 PM PT quoted:
I'd be very surprised if such a wish would be fulfilled.
It would be a departure from the current way of thought behind TB.
It would mean TB would change messages after/on sending them.
TB's strongest feature until now is that it doesn't do that.
Apart from that, you'd need an option to add the time/date of sending,
would this kludge be inserted before sending (when you don't know yet,
whether sending is gonna work) or after sending, so you'll save
another message than you'll actually have sent.
No, the best way to keep track of when you sent your message is to BCC
it to yourself. It'll have a Received: header from your ISP and it's
the same as what you sent.
There's also some variables that being overlooked with this potential new
feature.

The big one that stands out to me is the fact that the client PC sending
the mail is most likely not time sync'ed to an NTP server. I get way more
emails than I should that are many minutes off, and in some instances, days
off, months off, and years off. You can't rely on the client PC to have an
accurate date - unlike most SMTP servers that are sync'ed with an accurate
time of day.

Two more variables that stick out to me are time zone differences and
network glitches.

I'm not an e-mail header expert, and I don't play one on television.
However, I think you'd have some success with looking at the "Received"
headers in the e-mail message. There is a time/date stamp for each server
that sees the mail, and I'm thinking that you can trace it back to the
originator's SMTP server. Perhaps someone on the list could confirm/deny
this as a possible solution.

On paper, I think this is a cool feature. My personal opinion is that a
lot more thought needs to go into it before implementing it.

AntiVirus / X Header Question

I have uninstalled Symantec completely (LiveReg, LiveUpdate, NAV, etc).
Yet I still see this header.

I'm thinking it's hard coded somewhere? If so, where can I change this?
If it's not hard coded, does anyone know why my AVG plugin isn't adding

Possible Help for Extreme CPU Usage and Slowness

2004-06-22 Thread Mike Dillinger
I had a situation where The Bat! v2.0 (running on Win2K SP4) was using
100% of my CPU and taking forever to check mail and start up. So I got
a little experimental, and I started perusing the various paths that The
Bat! uses and found that my ACCOUNT.CFG file was 47MB. That seemed a
tad bit odd to me. So I closed The Bat!, renamed ACCOUNT.CFG to
ACCOUNT_BAK.CFG, started The Bat! up again, and have not had any
problems since. The CPU issue and the slowness issue have disappeared.
There were also no ill side effect as far as I can tell. I performed
this experiment a couple of months ago when v2.0 first came out and
everything has been fine since.

I asked the list what exactly ACCOUNT.CFG did, and specifically, what
would happen if it was absent. I didn't really get any replies so I'm
not sure if it hurts to not have it. All that I can say is give this a
try and keep your old file handy just in case. I would also highly
recommend performing a backup in case you experience ill side effects.

The one advantage of IMAP that I might like is that the mail is stored on
the server. So if I have a PC crash, my mail is still on the server and I
can retrieve it. Although if your provider crashes, are they backing up
their mail servers? Maybe not. Something to think about.

I also have the option of POP and IMAP, and I go with POP. I just leave
the mail on the server at all of my mail client locations, except one where
it downloads the mail and deletes it from the server. That way, I can
still see e-mail wherever I'm at.

Regular folders are specific to each POP/IMAP account. Common folders are
independent of mail accounts. So for instance, I have a Common folder
called "PERL" for my PERL related stuff. Since I receive PERL related
material from a mixture of my POP accounts, I have a filter set up in each

When I open a message and start browsing with the Next/Previous buttons,
they work backwards. So for instance, if I click "Next", I get the next
OLDER message instead of the next NEWER message. Same applies to "Previous"
and the delete arrows as well. Does anyone know how to fix this and/or
experience this problem?

I'm using The Bat! v1.60h.

Thanks,
-MikeD

Yes, but as someone else said, you must visit each folder one at a time to
enable the default columns. It's a one-time deal that's a lot of work, but
after that, they're all set together.

Right click on a folder and select "Properties". Under the "General" tab,
select the option "Use the account default column settings". Now any
folder listing you modify affects all of the other folders that have this
option selected.

Some people would like the HTML writing capabilities, like me. I find it
useful to included numbered lists and bulleted lists.

I think at any rate, it should be included, but have the ability to turn
on/off when writing messages.

I had the same problem. I could NOT unRAR the 1.60k release.

Are you using Outlook/Exchange? I had a similar problem and here's how I
fixed it.

I had to open up Outlook and leave it open while I was importing my
messages and address book into TB!. I noticed while I left it open, I got
a prompt saying something along the lines that an external program was
trying to read my mailboxes and address book, and if I wanted that to allow
this to happen. I granted the program 10 minutes of access (which was the
max allowable in my version of Outlook). Everything went fine. But if I
kept Outlook closed, the Exchange server just rejects any access by TB!.
TB! just froze until I opened Outlook and allowed the access.

Hopefully that helps,
-MikeD

RO>

Well oddly enough, the feature is there for multiple address books, so I'm
using it.  Call me weird.

The reason for having it separated is I have one for work, one for
personal, etc. So I'd like to e-mail a group for "softball", and by golly,
there's people in both the work and personal address books that would like
to play softball. So I guess I won't use the multiple address book feature
then.

I've always kept them separated. I find it easier when I can't remember so
and so's name from college, but I have a nice neat sorted list of college
buddies and I can scroll down a much shorter list (as opposed to a couple
hundred in one address book), and find the person's name in a expeditious
and efficient manner.

And yes, your point about having one AB with all of the groups is also more
efficient, which was what I originally tried to do.

As I said, call me weird then I guess.

Address Book Groups

2002-05-15 Thread Mike Dillinger

Folks,

Sorry, I've got a lot of questions. :)

Am I correct in assuming that you cannot address contacts to your group
unless they are in the same address book? I have multiple address books
for maintenance purposes. I'm having problems adding contacts to my group
unless they are in the same address book that the group is in.

Thanks,
-MikeD

The ">" Character

2002-05-15 Thread Mike Dillinger

Folks,

I've noticed that The Bat! will format an entire line as if it was a
reply if it finds the greater than character ">".

This is tough on me because I am on HTML and PERL mailing
lists, and as you may know, that character is used extensively in
both languages.

Is there any way I can force The Bat! to just look at the first couple
of characters in a line to determine whether it's a reply or code?

Thanks,
-MikeD

Word Wrapping

2002-05-14 Thread Mike Dillinger

Folks,

I've got a question about word wrapping with The Bat! I'm using version 1.60h.

I'd like to be able to word wrap locally, but not wrap the message, if
that makes sense. So for instance, when I send a message out, I don't
want the recipients to receive it word wrapped (that allows their
e-mail client to do what they want with the message), but for neatness
purposes on my end, I'd like to word wrap here. Hopefully this makes
sense.

Is this possible? I can only see either word wrapping everything or
nothing.

Thanks,
-MikeD
