RE: Urgent ! Are there any window-Eyes users out there ?

2006-10-28 Thread Stephen Clower
Claude,

Right now, the overall accessibility of TB has really declined because of
the GUI toolkit being used. All I can suggest doing with Window-Eyes to make
the message list read better is to assign a trigger delay of about 1 second
to your up and down arrows, home, end, and delete key. Make sure that your
delay comes before the speak current line command when reassigning how
Window-Eyes handles these keys. If not, you might end up with that horrid
double-speaking of messages when moving through the list.

I've also found that a few controls can safely be reclassed, but here, you
must be careful. For instance, buttons reclass successfully, as do edit
fields. However, checkboxes will not read their current state regardless of
what you do. When tabbing through some dialogs after reclassing all of the
controls I could locate, I have seen TB crash and burn along with a WE hang
up. I can only guess that Window-Eyes is polling a control in a way in which
it was never designed.

It's by far the most powerful E_mail client out there, but until Ritlabs
acknowledges its significant blind user base, we can only speculate until
they do something about the Windows controls they use for TB.

If you like, I can send you some sets I made last year off list. They aren't
stellar, but they may help make TB more usable with WE.

Best Regards,
Steve

Subject: Urgent ! Are there any window-Eyes users out there ?

Hi all,

I'm very sorry for the cross post but it is very very very
important for me ...

I'm about to switch of screen reader.
I will let Jaws for Window-Eyes.
And as I plan, of course, to keep on using The Bat! I would like to
know if there were on one of the TB lists, a or several users of this
screen reader and how they did to customize tb with it ... are there any set
files (the equivalent of Jaws scripts) to use tb more efficiantly ?

Big thanks in advance !

plain avnilla interface?

2006-04-25 Thread Stephen Clower
Hi folks,

Given the vast amount of customization available in The Bat, I was wondering if
it would somehow be possible to replace the current interface with standard
Windows controls? i submitted this request several months back in the bugs
database, but so far nothing has yet been done. The reason I ask is that I'm a
low vision computer user so rely on screen reading software to translate the
information on screen into synthetic speech. Some areas of the application work
decently well, but others, most notably the configuration dialogs are much more
difficult to navigate these days. I know that the layout still looks the same,
but the underlying structure of the window classes has changed, and many access
technology products don't know what to make of them. I love The Bat, and
despite the change of accessibility I use it exclusively for my E-mail needs. I
don't ask for an immediate change, but something like the old 3.0 kind of
interface would be welcomed. What might be even better would be a completely
skinnable interface, so those of us who prefer the plain vanilla interface for
the sake of accessibility can use that one, while everyone who wants the more
appealing eye candy can still use it. I'm using a product called Window-Eyes
from http://www.GWMicro.com. Their developer's site is at
http://www.gwmicro.com/Developers/
Anything you guys can do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for such an
excellent product so far. I look forward to any future improvements.

-

'Good as it is, TB! has always been flaky'

Indeed. TB is very powerful and flexible, but, as you, say, a tad flaky
at times.

As intimated in earlier posts, I am having trouble getting TB's IMAP to
work just right... (Message bodies not downloaded on sync but they DO
download when a message is selected)

Its OK ...but Outlook Express, Thunderbird and Opera M2 do it (IMAP)
better for me on this score...

A bug...or lack of transparency in IMAP set-up. 'The transparency' bit of
course could include the operator not seeing the obvious... ;-)

But, I still play with The Bat :-)

PS I have found both AVG and avast! work OK with TB...but I don't use

MAPI and message.html

2005-03-22 Thread Stephen Longhurst
Hi all,

We've just had our office email switched over to Microsoft Exchange, so I've
switched to using the Exchange support (via MAPI) in TB! (3.0.1.33 Pro).
Everything seems to work fine, except that every message I send gets a dreaded
'message.html' attached to it, even though I have everything set to use plain
text. If I send a message through a POP3/SMTP account I have set up, then just
a simple plain text message is sent.

If I switch to Outlook 2003 and send a message, it sends a simple plain text
message (since I've turned off all it's HTML/RTF formatting), so I know it can
be done. I think there is some way that TB! is using the MAPI interface that
causes the HTML message.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Have I missed something and can I
prevent it from happening?

Thanks very much,

 Steve

AVG Certification Message

I am bamboozled. I get emails from others (not necessarily using The

No virus found in this outgoing message.

Is this text added automatically to The Bat messages or do I have to
write my own macro to add this? (The AVG plug-in works fine.)

In AVG 7 I have certify turned ON in both Incoming and Outgoing
mail.

I am still using Version 1.61 of The Bat!

Feature Request I'd Like To See in The Bat!

2002-12-24 Thread Paul Stephen
Hi Everyone...

I mentioned this feature request before, but nobody replied to my
post. sigh

When editing a message I'd like to see the status of:

Auto Format
Auto Wrap
Justify on Auto Wrap

displayed on the bottom of the edit screen where the character/line counter
is shown.

I have to mentally remember that I've pressed Ctrl-Shift-F when I
Auto Format a paragraph and then remember to turn that format option off.

I hope some of you die hard BAT! fans will ask the developers to add
this feature into the next release. I've asked, but if they get more
requests perhaps it will get a higher priority.

Perhaps there is some way to accomplish this already. If so,
please tell me.

The font setting is local to the Bat's editor. So you can have the

Re: Import .bmf filer from Becky 2

2000-05-08 Thread Stephen

All the message folders are there in a .bmf format that I can read with my
 text editor.

Any ideas how I can get them back?

I cannot think of anything, except asking the question on the Becky
user group mailing list. I see it is listed at the url you gave me
for the beta. Maybe you can get answer there, if not here.

Except that it can be applied or removed by a single-click of mouse,
that is, it is a mousey toggle? Also that it works in the Outbox,
wherein the application of color don't seem to work for me (grayed
out). Even the Ctrl-G for keyboard flagging doesn't work there.

You made good point about how when creating custom folders that
"flagging" column just appears by default, which is a bit unwieldly if
not interesting in using flagging column. It would be nice to be able
to set up default column headers for new folders, rather than just
have them given and pre-set, for I don't think I can create a default
'new folder setup' in advance. I personally would like to have the

"Use the Account Default Column settings" preticked for me, as I
tick it every time anyway.

Dear Bat folk

Some time ago I had problems accessing my mail with TheBat and switched
 to Becky! v.2.

Where do you get that version ?

As http://www.rimarts.co.jp/ says up to ver 1.26 Do you mean
revision 2 ?

Re: lost all messages in upgrade

2000-05-06 Thread Stephen

Dear Bat folk

The next step can be made easier by deleting one registry key.
Unfortunately I can't remember which one. If someone else posts the
"converted message base" key, you can delete that, launch TB and be
in business. Otherwise, folder by folder, use Tools - Import -
From .MSB files. And import the appropriate files. This is tedious,
but less so than exporting then importing.

So there is new import Tool (Import from MSB) in ver 1.42 to deal
with the old MSB files.

I certainly didn't see that. Yes, that works well. Except for
one (MSB). Bat chokes on importing this, and my experience with this
shows a kind of advantage in also having exported in MSG form re
backup.

With earlier version I had exported all folder contents to MSG,
and yet Bat also chokes and dies via import of this folder's x53 MSG
contents if I select them all. On testing I found 2 messages out of 53
that it just cannot digest on import (whether singly or collectively),
and it just hangs. They look the same as the others, (same size and
makeup), so I wonder what it is about them? If I select the other 51,
it will import them in one go no problem, but if I include either of
the other two, it will crash. So it is good to have the folder
contents in MSG form also, as thus one can pick and choose the files
if there is a problem with importing them all at once via single MSB
file.

Well whatever, thanks for the advices on this thread, as I have
learnt some very useful basics from it, and like the Bat more now. I
guess it is good-bye to the MSB files. I should be deleting them
soon. I don't know how I got into this difficulty with the upgrade.

I installed the beta initially about a week ago, and took option
of "keeping the MSB files". Then somehow at some stage a day later it
was as though Bat had reverted back from the Beta, to ver 1.38 message
base or whatever. It didn't seem right, and I wasn't systematic
enough to grasp the issues properly at all; and sure enough, when
later I did the upgrade to the final 1.42 I think Bat install got
confused as much as me. :-)

I did the Ctl-Shift-Alt-L deal of course, but it wasn't missing any
folder, just showing no messages in any. And rebooting the registry
etc, didn't make any different. Ancient history now. I was just too
tired when installing the beta to be at my intuitive best, but it
turned out well.

Re: OT: Re: Email Virus' and .vbs files

2000-05-06 Thread Stephen

What are these .vbs files "officially" for anyway?

Think of it as a second batch language for the OS (operating system).
The other one is DOS batch language, with extension .bat (another
one NOT to click on in a hurry). To run .vbe files as macros you need
to have WSH (Windows Scripting Host) component installed. This is
bundled in Win98, but just like any other optional component you can
install it or remove it at will.

VBScript can also be designed for HTML documents (placed inside
script tags) rather than run on Win98 itself, but these commands
would have to pass Internet Zone security settings in your browser,
and assuming you have normal security setting you will be likely
prompted if anything much risky is programmed.

Bat seems safe, even with the most harmless script.

I sent myself a HTML email with script

SCRIPT language=VBScript
MsgBox "Hello World!"
/SCRIPT

and bat doesn't even display Hello World, whereas loading the same web
page without browser does display message (without prompt) via
auto-popup.

Re: OT: Re: Email Virus' and .vbs files

2000-05-06 Thread Stephen

I sent this script to myself and fetch the mail with Outlook Express
 5. Nothing happens. When double-click on the attachment, the
standard IE browser dialog appears (... What would you like to do
with this file ? Open it / Save it to disk). Opening has no meaning
now (gives an error), as the script works in browser only.
However, seems nothing happens by itself, not even in OE.

I fear I am getting SOT quickly, but quickly if you wish to demo to
yourself what I meant, then use OE5 to create the message. You need
to create a multipart/alternative one, not a multipart/mixed.

Have your mail-sending format set to HTML mail. When composing, make
sure "Source Edit" is available, (via View). Click on the Source tab,
and throw in your script (either in header or in body of html). Then
send to yourself (OE) and also CC to another account so you can pick
it up via Bat also. You'll see that the script runs without prompt in
OE upon viewing the message, but no scripting happens in Bat.

BTW: typo in my previous post where I wrote

and bat doesn't even display Hello World, whereas loading the same
web page without browser does display message (without prompt) via
 auto-popup.

should be "web page within browser" (within, not without).

lost all messages in upgrade

2000-05-05 Thread Stephen

Dear Bat folk

I got ver 1.42 today, and installed it over an earlier version and all my messages
disappeared. What did I do wrong I wonder? All the folders were
there, but all of them showed 0 (zero) messages.

I had a backup of the registry and MAIL folder, so I removed ver 1.42
and reinstalled ver 1.38, but I would like to use 1.42 for the
flagging.

Any advice?

S So I think the title bar should at least say something like - View
S Folder Bat of ServNet Sorted by Receive Time (Ascending)

TF ServNet - Bat View Folder (...)

TF Why not mention the name fo the folder first, as Netscape mentions the
TF name of the web site first? This way, you don't have five buttons in
TF the task bar saying "View Fo..."

I didn't realize the taskbar uses the same material as the title bar
of the window. Thanks for the heads-up. Yes, your idea is a good
one, except I would put the folder name first, as that may be all I
get to see in the taskbar. So I'll try again (below) for the title
bar text idea.

Re: TB! WishList

2000-05-01 Thread Stephen

Dear Bat folk

Hm ... what's the use for keeping those message lists separately each
 other ?

Flexibility? I thread some of my view folder message listing while I keep
the mail list unthreaded. If there was only one list then I couldn't do
 this.

IMO the Bat-cave of sorting and navigation would more quickly become
intelligible (and navigable) to the average user if able to see in the
folder title bar what sorting is in effect for a particular folder. As
it is, one has toggle/view the message list to recall the sort, and
AFAIK Bat doesn't even allow viewing of message list by a simple click
of an icon, or a straight-ahead keyboard shortcut, such asL

So I think the title bar should at least say something like -

View Folder Bat of ServNet Sorted by Receive Time (Ascending)
