How big is the messages.tbb of the inbox? When it's no so very big,
you might have a corrupt messages.tbi that can be deleted without
problems (or for safety's sake replaced to a secure location) and that
might fix it.
When your old inbox is very big and that wouldn't surprise me,
considering the 1134 messages you mentioned that were located there,
you might run into trouble.
That's why I asked in my previous message how big the messages.tbb was
(I'm talking MB's now, when you're in the GB ranges you're definitely
in trouble)
How much free space have you got on your c: drive (where your
temporary files are being stored) and how much free space have you got
on the drive where your message base is stored.

That's okay. When TB doesn't delete its own .tmp files that's a
symptom of other problems, but it causes problems on its own, thus
making everything worse.

AJ> I tried to manually compress the Inbox but the program hung up.

That might be because you're out of free space to copy your
messagebase.

AJ> When I try to exit the program it also hangs.

That's probably because you've turned on compress on exit for some
folders that can't be compressed anymore.

When we've solved the problem, remember for the future that it's not
wise to store messages permanently in a high traffic folder. Your
inbox is the one folder with the most traffic, therefore it's the
first one top cause problems.
Of the 26500 messages in my account (I'm exaggerating, there are only
26416 of them), I've got only 58 stored in my inbox and I wouldn't
lose any sleep on losing all of them. Any message that you'd like to
read more than once should be moved to another folder.

OK Roelof, thanks for the help. I tried your suggestions. Here's the
result. I created a new folder, exited TB and moved the .tbb and tbi
files to the new folder. Restarted TB. I am now in the process of
fetching the new mail. It is running very, very slow. It seems to be
sorting the new files into the proper folders. I will report back on
progress.

Now how do I recover the files in the old Inbox?

Earlier today I got an error message after fetching new mail. "Could
not store message/filename C:\DOCUM~1\Owner\LOCALS~\Temp\batDC.tmp"

I looked in that location and found over 600 bat*.tmp files. I deleted
all of them plus some other tmp files I found as well.

I tried to manually compress the Inbox but the program hung up.

When I try to exit the program it also hangs.

All other accounts work fine.

It looks like your inbox is rather big. Might be due to lack of
compressing, you ought to realize that in order to compress a folder
you as much free space as the folder uses before compression.

First we need to get you up and running, try this:
Create a new folder in TB
Close TB
Move the messages.tbb and messages.tbi files from your inbox to the ne
created folder.
Start TB
Since there's no messagebase in the inbox, TB will create a new
messages.tbb and .tbi
Configure TB to compress the inbox on exit.

Before we start to salvage the messages from the original inbox, how
big is it? When did you do your last purge and compress, when your
last scandisk or defrag? How many free space have you got on your
harddisk and how many bat*.tmp and other files in your temporary files
directory?

Cannot display Inbox messages

2004-06-28 Thread Al Jacobus
This just started tonight. All of a sudden I cannot display any of the
Inbox messages in the message auto view window. When I click on the
Inbox folder, the other two windows are empty. The Inbox contains
1,134 messages as shown in the account tree window. I can click on any
other subfolder and display its contents. The fetch function is
running extremely slow. I have shut off all of the Bat!'s virus
functions. I tried turning off the McAfee virus checker and the
ZoneAlarm firewall. No help. I tried Refresh Folders. No help. If I
try to compress the database it hangs and I need to use ctrl-alt-del
to exit it. It only occurs on one of the two accounts on that
computer. However, the fetch function is slow on both accounts.

Any help would be wonderful. We use The Bat! in our business and right
now we are shut down.

I know we are running an old version, but don't need the functions of
Version 2 so we are staying with the old one for now.
