Filter to remove duplicate messages

2002-07-25 Thread Anthony Xin Chen

Hello All,

I would like to remove duplicate messages, cross posting to
multiple mailing lists I am on, in an incoming filter. But I am running
out ideas.

Any suggestion?

Hi Anthony.

At 2:33 PM on Thursday, July 25, 2002 you wrote the
following about [Filter to remove duplicate messages]:

AXC I would like to remove duplicate messages, cross
AXC posting to multiple mailing lists I am on, in an
AXC incoming filter. But I am running out ideas.

If no one comes up w a filter, you can always resort to
the main menu: Folder - Kill Dupes in all Folders

That shouldn't work (I think) as the two emails will be different, ie,
one will come in from one source, while the other from another... this
would mean they aren't duplicate emails (duplicates being identical
emails including headers, body etc).

I know this trick and it works. But I am lazy so I would like to automate
it;-)

They are the same if the mailing lists are hosted by the same server, for
example yahoo groups, or company internal mailing lists.

Now, that is interesting. I thought dups were determined by the
references in the kludges. So if I put tbot on the To: line, I will
get 2 of this msg. Now, will kill dups kill one? Let's see...

When you say references, do you mean To, msgid, From etc? Msgid's can be
changed by servers (not often the case, but does happen sometimes), the
rest I guess is fixed ;) If however you mean references as in the
X-References and X-Reply-To headers, then no... they don't appear on new
messages ;) But I guess you're right, we'll find out when you post your
findings shortly ;)

AFAIK, this cannot be done since the only reference we can make to
other information when filtering is with the address book. There's no
option to filter based on what's in the message list which in your
case would be messages having the same message id as the incoming
message.
