Filters, Spam and Edits

2003-08-28 Thread P . Johnson
Just in case I missed something, I'm wondering if there is a way to
edit a received message Subject. I use SpamPal and it marks suspects
with **SPAM** in the subject line. Sometimes the Bayesian filter is
incorrect (we are both still learning) but when I move a clean email
to an inbox it is forever branded SPAM.

If I alter the tagline for spam in SpamPal options, I'm not sure the
messages will be routed to the junk folder.

I realize from reading some of the archives that editing a received
message is for some reason controversial. But for cases like the one
above, or when a sender neglects to put a subject line in; or in the
message body when the formatting makes it difficult to read, it would
be a great help to be able to edit. If there is now a way to do so I
would be thrilled to learn how!

Best wishes,

Under SpamPal Options/Message Tagging my preference is to *not* check
"Mark subject lines.." or "Display X-SpamPal: header in subject
lines." This way SpamPal puts the classification information in the
message's hidden kludge area. I think it looks less tacky this way.

If you create a filter in The Bat to look for "^X-SpamPal: SPAM"
(minus the quotes) in the kludge or anywhere you can move the messages
to your spam folder automatically. Erroneously classified mail (if you
have any) will still have the altered kludge, but it won't be in the
Subject field which would look rather annoying.

If you place your SpamPal filter after your mailing list filters, and
your Known filter (people in your address books), I think you'll find
little if any erroneously classified spam. You might get an occasional
unrecognized spam that you can easily add to the Bayesian plug-in.

I've been running SpamPal for a few months and honestly don't recall
any mail erroneously classified as spam. I might get 1 or 2
unrecognized spam each week and average 45-50 spam/day.

Yep and the subject is part of the message.

PJ> If there is now a way to do so I would be thrilled to learn how!

Well, actually it is possible, but not solely with TB:
Export the message
Edit the subject with Notepad or another text editor.
Import the message back into TB.
Now you can delete the original message.

One disadvantage of this method is the the received time/date gets
changed into the time you've imported it.

Don't forget to enable 'regular expressions' in the filter options. The
search string defined is actually a regular expression.

Over here, all formats (.msg, .eml, .mbx) appear to be plaintext and
can be edited with any plaintext editor.

This is actually a redirect operation that you've executed. The official
shortcut is CTRL-F6. However, at times there are times when a single
operation is bound to multiple shortcuts and you seem to have stumbled
on one of them.

For editing messages, I've created two filters. The first filter exports
the message and opens the exported message in my favourite text editor.

I edit the message, save it and then execute the next filter that
imports the exported messages (now edited). I import to my imports
folder. I then move the message to the desired location.

The first filter follows. Simply copy it to your clipboard, including
the 'beginfilter' and 'endfilter' lines. Paste in your filter set. Use
the replied or read filter set. Before copying, you could alter the
paths for the 'extcmd' and 'Extfile' to reflect your preference. You'll
also need to assign a hotkey for it.

BeginFilter
Name: Export for editing
Active: 1
Source: \\alliem\Inbox
Target: \\alliem\Inbox
CopyFolder: none
MainSet: 40'e'
Actions: faExport,faExternal,faoExportOver,faoManualOnly,faoHotKey,faoSaveUnix
ExtCmd: C:\Applications\TextPad\textpad.exe C:\Backup-cmds\edit.txt
ExtFile: C:\Backup-cmds\edit.txt
AddAddrItems: afiFrom,
DelAddrItems: afiFrom,
HotKey: 49241
EndFilter

The second filter that imports the edited export follows:

BeginFilter
Name: Import after editing
Active: 1
Source: \\alliem\Inbox
Target: \\alliem\Inbox
CopyFolder: none
MainSet: 40'e'
Actions: faExternal,faoRunDetached,faoManualOnly,faoWaitCompletion,faoHotKey
ExtCmd: c:\backup-cmds\import.bat
ColourGroup:
AddAddrItems: afiFrom,
DelAddrItems: afiFrom,
HotKey: 49225
EndFilter

The import command is actually run via a .cmd file containing the import
command:

"C:\Applications\The Bat!\thebat.exe" /IMPORTF="Imports";X;IN=C:\backup-cmds\edit.txt;R

"Imports" is the name of the folder I wish to import to. You can read
up the syntax of the command in the help.

Currently, to refine things, I have those two filter actions to be run
via two PowerPro toolbar buttons.

Can you tell me exactly how I would export and import back? I see an
export option under Tools but neither the msg or eml formats seem to
be editable. I'm sure it's obvious but I can't figure it out.

There might be a better way. A new user asked about the ability to
edit received messages. Without testing, I replied, "Try Ctrl-E". So
today I tried it and thought I had provided bad advice.

Ctrl-E opens the message for editing as I said. But when you try to
close the message, TB asks if you want to save it and, if you do,
demands an entry in the "to" field. Then it places the saved message
in the outbox. It's a "pending message", so it won't be sent unless
you send it. (I specified "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" just to give it a
valid-looking address.)

The message is parked (although it's marked with a "pending message"
icon instead of the usual parked "P" icon). I thought that was the end
of the story, but it's not.

You can then click the icon in the PARKED column to change the icon
back to a blue dot and drag the message to a folder of your choosing.
Once again TB proves that it's capable of just about anything!

It doesn't even need a valid address. I usually put "test" in my
messages that are drafts and it will save it just fine.

You can also:

1. Drag the message to your Outbox folder.
2. Open it (double click on it)
3. Edit subject
4. Save it (don't send it)
5. Move it back to original folder

A bit cumbersome, but less so than exporting and importing.

Good point. The solution is not perfect, but likely suffices in
most situations. I "solve" (actually avoid) the problem by not
adding the e-mail classification to my Subject: line. This was
already suggested.
