Januk Aggarwal was so glad to send me that registry key and now I'm able
to say that we still have no progress in resolving this weird .eml
problem... The registry key we are talking about belongs to a Windows
Session Manager, not any file-associating procedures :-(.

Add me too. On my home computer, where I never even installed Outlook,
clicking on the eml file even started the Outlook installation shield!

When I removed eml association from the registry on my office computer
and then associated it with TB, a new message window opened in TB with
this file as attachment. I then associated the extension with Notepad,
which works. Couldn't find a way to have it in TB's Viewer.

OTOH: do we really need this? Anybody sends me an eml file, he gets it
back (same as with HTML or Enriched emails) with the request to send
me Text/Plain messages if they want me to even read it. I have no use
for eml files. Do I?

Well, I am one of the ones who can open .eml files in TB's internal

anything remotely close to having to do with .eml files. I don't

As for me, .msg opens with TB! instead of .eml file. Trying to open an .eml
attachment cause system to invoke a standard Internet Mail application
that is a part of IE 3.0 which was shipped with Win 95 OSR 2.

Currently I have a standard .eml file association:

Description : Internet E-Mail Message
MIME Type: message/rfc822
Default Extension: .eml
Actions present : open (default):
   rundll32.exe C:\WIN_95\SYSTEM\mailnews.dll,EMLFileHandler

I removed this action (open) _without_ removing the whole
file association, then tried to open an .eml attachment in TB! again. It
asked me for the program which is able to open such files. I selected TB!
and it opened a standard message composition window with attachment
named, of course :-) "sample1.eml". There is no need to say that this
process seems to be endless.

Next I removed the .eml file association at all but achieved the same
(negative) result.

Today I'll try to experiment more thorougly.

Oh, I forgot to add:

Using:

No Outlook Express or Outlook installed (ever)
Customised IE5 version: 5.00.2919.6307C0 Cipher Strength: 128 bit

(As well as custom install of IE5 that didn't include any Outlook stuff,
Windows was installed with a batch script that also did not include any
Outlook or Frontpage stuff; a clean machine)

It is not surprising that this topic is of interest to all. I just took at

How-do-you-do,

Uwe Brockmann posted to [EMAIL PROTECTED] making the following comments:

U> (6) source of suggestion:
U> Simon, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
U> suggestion (paraphrased):
U> "Run TB! on a system on which Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft
U> Outlook Express have been installed."

I did not actually suggest this. I only declared my current setup - which never has
had Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express installed - as a means of raising
for discussion the possibility of my setup being 'a' reason why TB! is unable to open
files with .eml extensions. ;)

U> If you know the solution to the problem, please tell us!

Curious as to why some were able and some were not able to open .eml files,
I installed TB! on another PC (temporarily) with OExpress v5 AND Outlook 98
already installed but was still unable to open .eml files with TB! So,
whether, you have, have had, or have never had Outlook programs installed
has absolutely nothing to do with TB!s claimed .eml file viewing
capabilities.

My registry had an .eml key in the reg as mentioned (even though it has
never had Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express installed) in a
previous posting, and I backed it up and then removed it. Result: eml files
open with notepad, the default system viewer. Reregged eml extension and eml
files then open as attachement as before. I think this is more likely to be
a feature that TB! does not yet include.

(I even imported keys from the Oulook machine without success)

.

Just read Marck's response. Seems that his answer would be correct. However,
it does raise the question as to how some particular users are able to have
TB!s internal viewer open .eml files. This is indeed a mystery.

U> If TB! calls Outlook Express or Notepad or some other program to open
U> sample.eml then you have the problem.

U> If TB! opens a blank mail message
U> in an "Edit Mail Message" editor window and shows sample.eml as an

I would not say it was a problem as such as this has yet to be determined.
It could be a 'unique feature' to some individuals ;)

Ok. My version of IE is 5.00.2920.
   Cipher strength 56bit

I'm using a different build from yours and still OExpress
opens the attachment. Have the other Win2K users updated their IE
installations?

I have fiddled with the registry and file type definitions here to
make .eml and .msg files identical in definition as "msgfile" types.

When the registry contains a file type definition for opening
"msgfile" types, msg files are opened internally to TB and eml files
are opened using the external editor (I have set that to be TextPad
now, where it was originally a RunDll call for the OE Message Viewer
DLL).

When the registry no file type definition for opening "msgfile" types,
msg files are opened internally to TB and eml files are not opened (a
dialog box opens asking which application to use).

I have found "msg" as a known extension within the source code for TB.
"eml" is not mentioned.

My conclusion is that, in theory, no-one should be able to open eml
files in the TB internal viewer. Yet some can :-/. IMHO, it will take
a code change in TB to make this a cross platform / configuration
feature.

(1) Justin D. Paine, [EMAIL PROTECTED], NT 5.0 Build 2195
(2) Januk Aggarwal, [EMAIL PROTECTED], Win 98 4.10 Build A

(3) Roy Jackson, [EMAIL PROTECTED], Win 95
(4) tracer, [EMAIL PROTECTED], Win 98
(5) Allie Martin, [EMAIL PROTECTED], NT 5 Build 2195

So far nobody has solved the problem that people in the second group are
experiencing.

None of the following suggestions have allowed TB! users to solve the
problem themselves:

(1) source of suggestion:
Januk Aggarwal, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
suggestion (paraphrased):
"There may be different versions of TB! that are all numbered
1.41. Try downloading the latest version."
result:
No change.

(2) source of suggestion:
Januk Aggarwal, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
suggestion (paraphrased):
"Delete Windows' .eml file association."
result:
Windows asks for program to use when user attempts to open a
.eml file.

(3) source of suggestion:
Januk Aggarwal, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
tracer, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Marek Mikus, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
suggestion (paraphrased):
"Change Windows' .eml file association to The Bat!"
result:
TB! opens an empty file in "Edit Mail Message" editor and shows
.eml file as attachment. Clicking on .eml attachment
recursively opens another empty file in another "Edit Mail
Message" editor window. However, the contents of the .eml file
is never displayed.

(4) source of suggestion:
Dieter Hummel, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
suggestion (paraphrased):
"Wait for TB! version 2.0 which will provide for calling an
external editor."
result:
Calling an external editor would not solve the problem. Version
2.0 is not out yet.

(5) source of suggestion:
Oleg Zalyalov, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
suggestion (paraphrased):
"The authors of TB! should modify the source code of TB! so that
TB! wil treat .eml files exactly like .msg files. This
modification should be incorporated into version 1.42 of TB!."
result:
This should solve the problem. However, this solution can only
be applied by the authors of TB!

(6) source of suggestion:
Simon, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
suggestion (paraphrased):
"Run TB! on a system on which Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft
Outlook Express have been installed."
result:
This does not work for me.

(7) source of suggestion:
Allie Martin
suggestion (paraphrased):
"Run TB! on a system on which Microsoft Outlook Express has
never been installed."
result:
This was not necessary for Tony Boom ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and
Justin D. Paine ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) who both succeeded at
opening .eml attachments with TB!'s internal viewer.

(8) source of suggestion:
Alexander V. Kiselev, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
suggestion (paraphrased):
"The problem is caused by some versions of Microsoft Internet
Explorer or other installed software. Start search for the
cause of the problem by comparing installed versions of
Internet Explorer."
result:

Here is what I have according to the Version tab of the
properties of my IEexplore.exe file:

File Version: 5.00.2014.200
Created: Wednesday, February 24, 1999
Modified: Wednesday, February 24, 1999

If you think that Alexander V. Kiselev ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) has the
right idea, please feel free to state your version of Internet Explorer.

If you know the solution to the problem, please tell us!

I enclose the two sample files sample.eml and sample.msg as
attachments again. If TB! displays them identically with its internal
viewer then you do not have a problem.

If TB! calls Outlook Express or Notepad or some other program to open
sample.eml then you have the problem. If TB! opens a blank mail message
in an "Edit Mail Message" editor window and shows sample.eml as an
attachment (which you cannot open) then you also have the problem.

That must be a GEDCOM-file.

All genealogy programs have their own ways of storing/organizing data.
GEDCOM is an attempt to standardize transport of genealogy data between
different programs, and is (as far as I know), the only common format
for this purpose today.

You will ned a program like "Family Tree Maker" or "Brothers Keeper"
to open ged-files.

Hmmm. Interesting. I looked at my file types and see Outlook
Express registered to open .eml files. I changed it to TB! and when I
try to open the .eml file, TB! opens a new message with the file as an

Re: How to open attached files with ".EML" file extensions?

2000-03-14 Thread Alexander V. Kiselev

Hi there!

On 14 Mar 00, at 8:52, Uwe Brockmann wrote
about "Re: How to open attached files with .EML...":

Hello guys, I'm not even trying to shed some light to the problem discussed
by you (although if I were you, I'd first of all compare the IE versions you've
got outta there;-) IMHO, *.eml is one of the filetypes used by this
"application", which might or might not affect how TB works with these files,
depending on other M$ stuff you've got installed. FWIW, I've got win'95
OSR2 build b Russian, some traces (maybe) of MSIE 3.0 -- although I
did my best to get rid of it completely, and both MSGs and ELMs are
opened by TB internally here. Besides, no Outlook installed here;-)).

Now just in case I'm providing some information that might have escaped
you. Both *.msg and *.eml files are just "invented" by TB. For example,
when a message comes that has a message/rfc822 attachment, TB will
display this attached message as something like .msg. Note that
there were *absolutely nothing* in the original message that claimed that
this attachment needs to get this name (!!!). In my understanding, this is a
major shortcoming of TB internals, which has been discussed on this list
more then once, BTW.

Now as for the *.eml filenames. Again, these are "invented" (or, well, say
"introduced", it really doesn't matter too much;-)) by TB internally under the
following circumstances: *if* the incoming message has a message/rfc822
attachment, *which*, in turn, has a message/rfc822 attachment *itself*. This
latter attached message is denoted as .eml by TB (God knows why;-
))

So the dry remainder of all this discussion is: the person who has sent you
the message *did not* attach neither *.msg nor *.eml files to it (sic!).

Meanwhile, this your message I'm replying to reveals a (_serious_) bug in
TB treatment of message/rfc822 attachments. Look below.

> To illustrate the problem, I enclose two identical copies of a sample
> .EML file that I created with Microsoft Outlook Express. The first
> attachment is named "sample.eml". The second attachment is named
> "sample.msg".

...And here's how it looked like (my comments inside):

19111A12FA030F5
Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="sample.eml"
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="sample.eml"

 This IS a bug! A Content-type: message/rfc822 _implies_ (see
RFCs) that there the content-transfer-encoding is to be set to either 7bit or
8bit, other types are prohibited... But:

MIME-Version: 1.0

ZXJzaW9uOiAxLjANCkNvbnRlbnQtVHlwZTogbXVsdGlwYXJ0L2FsdGVybmF0aXZlOw0KCWJvdW5k
YXJ5PSItLS0tPV9OZXh0UGFydF8wMDBfMDAwNF8wMUJGOEQ2NC4zNDAxMjcwMCINClgtUHJpb3Jp

You see, this was supposedly a base64-encoded block, but
without properly set content-transfer-encoding this is nothing but crap;-(
Anyhow, the base64 was _not_ allowed for this part, see above and RFCs

19111A12FA030F5
Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="sample.msg"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="sample.msg"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

RnJvbTogIlV3ZSBCcm9ja21hbm4iIDx1d2VAbmV0Y29tLmNvbT4NClN1YmplY3Q6IA0KTUlNRS1W
ZXJzaW9uOiAxLjANCkNvbnRlbnQtVHlwZTogbXVsdGlwYXJ0L2FsdGVybmF0aXZlOw0KCWJvdW5k

OTOH, this part is all right, but _why_on_earth_ the content-transfer-encoding
has been set _twice_ here really escapes me!!!

So well, I'm CCing it as a bug report to RIT labs, of course;-)

Just for curiousity in general: how can you add another or more file

For EML extension is "Description of File Type":

"Microsoft MHTML Document 4.0".

Try to find it and change to TB.

Yes, I have Outlook Express and Outlook installed on here and neither
of them tried to open when I viewed both the .eml and .msg
  attachments.

TB opened both files identically with it's own internal viewer and
I've never changed any reg entries or file associations since I
started using TB. In fact I've never done either, ever.

I do have here an attachment that has been sent to me with a .ged

Off course, if like me, you have Notepad open everything that doesn't have
an association, then as soon as you delete the .eml class entry from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, eml files are now opened with Notepad. Even if you then
associate eml files with TB! they open as an attachment still.

Let me know your special technique Tracer :)

A capability for calling an external editor, while desirable, would not
solve this problem. TB! has both a built-in editor and a built-in
message viewer. The latter has no editing functions. You can use it
to look at messages but not to edit them. The problem is that there is
no way to call this built-in viewer to look at attached .EML files even
though the viewer is capable of displaying them.

To illustrate the problem, I enclose two identical copies of a sample
.EML file that I created with Microsoft Outlook Express. The first
attachment is named "sample.eml". The second attachment is named
"sample.msg".

TB! 1.41 can open "sample.msg" with its internal viewer but has to call
Outlook Express to open "sample.eml".

Why wait for 2.0 if the only thing that has to be done is to add eml
to supported extensions and treat .eml attachments the very same way
as .msg ones?

It is not a matter of associations -- there are no associations to

If I try to open a .EML file with thebat.exe, TB! opens an editor window
instead of a viewer window. The .EML file is shown as an attachment.
If I try to open the attachment, TB! recursively opens another editor
window which again shows the .EML file as an attachment. I can never
see the contents of the attachment even if it consists of plain ASCII
text!

Deleting Windows 98's .EML file association only delays my choice of
program for opening .EML files until the time I actually open one. It
does not provide me with additional choices.

I see the following choice of programs for opening .EML files:

(1) Outlook Express (ugly, but works)
(2) Notepad or other text viewer or editor (cannot handle
nested attachments)
(3) The Bat! (does not work!)

On my computer .MSG files are associated with Microsoft Exchange.
Nonetheless TB! opens them with its internal viewer which is what I
want. Therefore I suspect that TB! has a hard-coded internal file
association between .MSG files and its internal viewer that overrides
Windows 98's .MSG file associations. Unfortunately, TB! does not
provide a hard-coded or user-configurable file association between .EML
files and its internal viewer.

Unfortunately, TB!'s internal viewer cannot be called from the command
line thus making it impossible for the user to create a file association
between .EML files and TB!'s internal viewer with the Windows 98 file
association mechanism.

I suspect that the problem (of having to call Outlook Express from
within The Bat! to read some e-mail) can only be solved by modifying
TB!'s source code.

You've probably tried this, but have you tried deleting the
association for .EML files? Just do what you would to change the
.EML file type, but instead of editing it, delete it.

Or you can try changing the .EML file type to open in TheBat.exe
I'm not sure if that will work, but it might be worth a shot.

How to open attached files with ".EML" file extensions?

2000-03-12 Thread Uwe Brockmann

I am currently evaluating TB! under Windows 98. I sometimes receive
e-mail containing attached files with ".EML" file extensions. TB! calls
Microsoft Outlook Express to open them with the command

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1

That works fine. However, I would much prefer opening these files with
TB!'s built-in message viewer. Is there a way to do that?

So far TB! has been able to properly open all of my ".EML" attachments
with its internal viewer after I renamed their file extensions to
".MSG". Thus the problem may be reducible to getting TB! to treat
".EML" attachments like ".MSG" attachments.

I cannot solve the problem by changing Windows 98's ".EML" file
associations because I cannot invoke TB!'s message viewer from the
command line.

I do not want to open my ".EML" attachments with a dumb viewer or editor
such as Microsoft Notepad because some of these attachments contain
further nested attachments.
