Bug? That's not a bug; that's a feature.

I have the same problem here with the German ISP 1und1.de.

I corresponded with their support about this, but they insisted on the
header being forged, because their spam filter reported
"FORGED_MUA_THEBAT_CS". I had to disable their filter for one account.

Peculiarly it only happens with the German lists, and then mostly, but
not restricted, to users of TB! v1.x or 2.x. For the English lists I
only have to whitelist the senders with (too many) numerals in their
address. The TB! header doesn't seem to matter... hmm

Erm. The only thing "still going on" is that spammers fake their mass
mailings' X-Mailer header - and it will probably be that way as long as
spam exists.

The logic of ISPs blocking mails according to the content of the
X-Mailer header is beyond any comprehension - how many of your 189 spam
e-mails claim to be created by Outlook/Outlook Express?

Conclusion: I'd ask the ISP that blocks TB messages to block all
Outlook/Outlook Express messages as well.

Actually, some spamware uses TB's X-Mailer header, which caused the
confusion.

Untrue. There was a spam remailer software package that offered a The
Bat! X-Mailer header as one of its camouflage options. Along with
Outlook Express and a few others. The spam was sent by this mean and
not by The Bat!, making ignorant ISP techs react in an insane manner.

The option exists freely and I have use it. Check my headers.

I suppress the X-Mailer header by the configuration option and use
this macro:

%SetHeader("User-agent","TB/%THEBATVERSION (by RITlabs)")%-

To insert my own variant. I am proud to use TB, but have to
acknowledge that some very poorly educated ISPs out there are behaving
irresponsibly.

This is the reason that the option even exists under the options menu to

Due to spectacular malfunction in the process of deductive reasoning. An
excellent material for anthropologists of 21st century.

Besides, and apart from this, Laurie, since you are new to TB, if you
don't like the smell of a (not very fresh) trout, then you shouldn't
top-post when you reply to a message (only bottom-posting is acceptable
after the rules of the list), and you should have so called cut-mark, at
the end of your message.

The "cut-mark" consists of two dashes and one empty (letter) space, at
the beginning of the line, after which you hit the enter button: "-- ".

  ***

(It would be also very good if someone would include eventually these
two basic informations/rules in the famous "Mission Statement", together
with needed explanations what they serve for and how to apply them, so
the new people could have a chance to avoid trouting for nothing. I
suppose that such things have higher priority than those about "The
Roguemoticon Project" and on how thus to enter The Bat Cartoon Network.

Actually, is there something like that in a message every member gets
after just had been subscribed to the list? I vaguely remember that
time...does such a message still exist in these modern times?)

X-Mailer cannot be edited or otherwise changed from within TB! If you
want to modify it for selected recipients, you will either need an
external application like X-Ray Mail Assistant (http://xrayapp.com),
or use the "User-Agent" header for your mailer information (see the
headers in this message).

Otherwise just turn it off from Options->Preferences->General. Uncheck
"Use X-Mailer header in messages (for administrative purposes)".

I am on a lot of mailing lists. I finally had to
simply remove it altogether rather than chance
further problems. There are several large servers
that out and out refused to allow my mail through
when it listed TB!.

I've recently had a couple of emails blocked from two different ISP's
who claim The Bat is a known spammer. Of course I know this is
bull, and I forwarded the info at Ritlabs on the subject to their

this won't stop future problems at unknown servers, but I email these
two people frequently and it is a real pain to login to Yahoo Webmail
