If you leave mail on the server then you should have no problem with
using this option. It's just that if you enable deletion of mail from
the server after download in the account properties, the messages that
exceed your size limit will also be deleted from the server.

Personally, I delete messages from the server using my filters and use a
message size limit. The option to delete from the server is in the
filter actions section. The messages to which the filters are applied
are deleted during the next mail check. This works very well for me
since all my messages are filtered via my spam filter system. With this
method, the only messages that remain on the server and aren't
downloaded automatically, are messages that exceed the size limit. I can
then use the message dispatcher to inspect and download/delete as I
desire. Advantages of this method are that if you have a limited mailbox
size, it keeps your mailbox level down, and it avoids clutter by
preventing having to search through a lot of mail to find those with
large attachments (mind you, the sort by message size option in the
dispatcher eases the pain of the latter).

AFAIK, the 'delete received messages from server' option in the account
properties is indiscriminate in that it will delete even those messages
for which only the headers have been downloaded.

In fact, I just ran a check and this is still the case!!

Be careful with this option!!! If you wish to be able to download large
attachments via the dispatcher while restricting the initial download of
large attachments, *do not* enable 'delete received messages from
server'. You will lose all your large attachments.

As you can tell, I don't use the 'if over X bytes' feature. The first
time it happens without prior warning, I politely tell the sender I'll
knock them out and tattoo 'Satan's Spawn' on their forehead if the do
it again (I'm at 21 kbps dialup at home).

words of wisdom:

S I just tested this out a little and it works fine, if I immediately
S go and check the large message, before checking for new mail again.
S Otherwise that message gets deleted, since it's covered by one of my
S filters.

Have you enabled leave messages on server and define like 2 days as the
keep time limit? Large messages are not deleted for me unless the server
time expires (2 days for me) or I manually delete them with the
dispatcher.

S I guess there is no setting somewhere to save these larger messages
S for a day or so? Or can I accomplish this with a specific filter
S regarding size and override all my other filters?

This is what I do exactly:

In my account properties, mail management settings I have:

Leave messages on server.

Keep messages on server for 2 days.

Receive only headers if message size exceeds 150KB.

I then enable delete message from server in all my filters.

What is really happening here is that TB! will not delete any messages
from the server unless:

a) the message has exceeded the defined duration of stay on the server.
The duration being defined by the 'keep messages on server for x days'
option.

b) directed to do so by a filter. A filter will not delete a message
from the server unless it has actually filtered the message.

Messages that exceed your defined size limit do not reach the inbox, so
they shouldn't be deleted.

WAIT, hold a minute!! I think I know what is wrong. You are filtering
the large message notification aren't you, and the filter that catches
these large message notifications also has the server delete option
enabled right?

Do the following and see if it helps:

Create a new filter and place it at the top of your filter list. I named
mine 'large message notifier'.

Source Folder : Inbox Destination Folder: Inbox

Filter strings:

String: "The Bat!" ; Location: Sender ; Presence: Yes

Do not enable 'delete message from server' for this filter.

Large message download (was: Re: Blocking mail from specific sender?)

2000-12-30 Thread Thomas Fernandez

No, that's fine. I liked the way Eudora Light handles large messages
when I still used it (I don't remmeber what version that was):

You set "delete messages on server".
You set "download messages up to a size of xxx KB".

When a larger message comes in, only the headers will be downloaded,
plus an icon indicating that the rest of the message is still on the
server. If you click on this icon, the full message will be downloaded
at the next mailcheck. If you do not click on this icon, the message
will be deleted from server after a while (two days or so?), and the
icon will disappear from the message.

I find this the most elegant solution I have seen so far.

Account / Sorting Office / Selective Download. Create a New filter and
select Kill under Advanced.

Disadvantage of selective download filters (if you have at least one)
is that TB will download all headers first, check them against
selective download filters, delete messages on server if appropriate,
and then only start downloading the messages. So if the sender sends a
lot of messages, or very long ones, this may make sense; otherwise, I
would create an incoming filter and choose "Delete" under the action
tab.

S So, I have a choice between slow downloads because of this person

Well, in that case (attachments), you could just go into Account
