In TheBat click on the "Inbox" for the Hotmail account to highlight it. Press F2 or Account->Get_Mail to start the retrieval. It is a little slow on starting. If you have a personal firewall (Kerio, ZoneAlarm, BlackIce, etc) disable it for the test. If you are successful in retrieving data, re-enable the firewall, send a message to your hotmail account from you regular email (isp) and try to retrieve it again. That's about it. Good Luck. But after killing it and restarting from the START menu it worked fine. The flame in the tookbar icon will "flicker?" while it is downloading the mail.
