Sorry Allie, should've really mentioned that I did check this too. There was actually no font selected in the above preference so I selected one and it changed in the preference window but didn't do anything in the main TB gui (very confused). At this point I re-installed the whole thing (hoped to avoid this but...) and it's all ok now. Just wanted to say thanks for the reply.
