questions/suggestions for the bat...

2004-06-20 Thread Max Rydahl Andersen
Dear tbudl,

I have been using The bat for some time now and found it to be GREAT
;)

Still I got some questins/suggestions for it...

A. Message Finder is lying

When searching for messages via Message Finder the status bar always
immediatly says Search Finished. Found 0 messages and after a few
seconds or more e.g. 100 results come in and the status bar still
states it has found 0 messages.

Is this a known bug ?
Could we not get something like Search in progress. Found xx of yy
messages until now. xx would be found messages and yy the number
of messages scanned until now. And optimally the found messages should
be added to the result list on-the-fly so I can start using the
messages before the complete search has finished.

B. Configure default TO:/CC: for a folder ?

Is that possible ? e.g. I have a thebatlist folder for this
mailinglist and I would like to be able to select the folder and when
I press Create a new message that TO: would be set to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] per default.

C. Automatically create virtual folder for mailing lists / authors ?
Opera's M2 has a rather nice and unique feature (as I know of) that
makes it create a virtual folder (they call it Access point)
automatically for each mailinglist im on. They do it by looking at the
mail headers to decide if it is a mailing list or not.

Is this possible in The Bat ? (it would really safe me some time
configuring my filters ;)

Another nice possibility would be able to get an automatic virtual folder
per user in my address book so I could instantly go find messages
received/sent to them.

D. What is the Watched by feature in folder properties ?
I haven't been able to find docs on that feature - what is it ?

E. IMAP folders reset their ordering when new folders come in ?!
I love the ability in The Bat to reorder the sequence of folders so
that I can have:

Inbox
+ work
+ private
+ privatebiz
+ ...
+ ...

But as soon as I go to Manage IMAP folders that ordering is nuked
and the folder is now alphabetically ordered instead - is their a way
to keep this ordering and let The Bat just add any new folders at the
bottom instead of messing up my own sort ?

F. Quick-change SMTP server ?

I'm so unfortunate to have a laptop, so I travel alot between
sites: home, work, work-sites, family etc. At most of these places I
need to use a separate SMTP server as they have blocked port 25 access
to anyone else than the providers SMTP server.

Until now I have gone in and manually changed the SMTP server in
account properties on each of my mail accounts (3) when changing
location - and I do that at least 2 or 3 times a day (home/work/home)
and it gets rather bothersome ;( Is there a easier way ?

Thanks in advance for answering ;)

It's a list of _virtual_ folders, that watch this folder. You can't

MRA E. IMAP folders reset their ordering when new folders come in ?!

Is this a known bug ?

I think this has to do with IMAP since I began noting this after I
started using IMAP. I'm so happy that the search works at all that I
haven't made a fuss about it. IMAP is currently under heavy
development and they're trying to make new functionality 'serious
problems' free before ironing out the various cosmetic issues.

 B. Configure default TO:/CC: for a folder ?

Is that possible ? e.g. I have a thebatlist folder for this

You could use the %To= and %CC= macros.

These macros in the new message template invariably cause problems
since you could inadvertently send a private message to the list when
a new message is invoked with that folder selected.

 D. What is the Watched by feature in folder properties ?
I haven't been able to find docs on that feature - what is it ?

It shows which virtual and chat folders are monitoring the folder.

Your experience doesn't mirror mine at all. The folders stay in the
order that I placed them. Odd. shrug

X-Ray http://www.xrayapp.com/, a little utility for The Bat! has the
ability to choose SMTP server to use based on your machine's IP
address. Could that help?

Why am I asking? :) I know it can help.

You just need to know the different IP blocks your various ISP's use.
That's not so trivial but I can usually get this info by doing a
IP/Hostname lookup on the ISP domain.

If that is what it takes yes ;) My main wish is to say - hmm...what
mails have I sent to Alexander Gladilin and then just click on his

requiring me to add a virtual folder manuallyit's just a
question of easy-access and easy use.

May I make a suggestion? This could help while waiting for the
auto-virtual folder creation which could be a long time.

There are two features that could help you with what you wish to do.
I'm sorry that it's not a single point and click action and I agree
that being able to achieve the same thing by selecting a folder from a
bank of VF's would be easier.

Holding the Alt key while selecting any item in the message list will
list only those messages containing that particular item. So opening
your Sent folder and alt-clicking on the name 'Alexander Gladilin' in
the To column will list only those messages sent to that person.
Moving the mouse away from the list and back will lead to a popup
showing the number of messages currently listed (x of y).

If you don't see 'Alexander Gladilin' in the message list right away,
you can easily find it by starting to type the name with the message
list in focus. The quick search feature will be autoinvoked. The quick
search keeps selecting a message that best matches the search string.
CTRL-Enter will display other messages that match the string search.

So my usual action is to do a quick search for the name or subject and
then alt-click on the name. I now have a list of all messages to or
from the particular person.

I used x-ray for this purpose on my laptop, but found that after some
changes to the network at the office, which uses Exchange, the
connection to the smtp server for the office was always rejected when
it went via X-Ray, although it worked perfectly when I entered exactly

I have since found that my ISP offers SMTPAUTH for use when not

This is very convenient, as I can send mail via my ISP however I am

No, the default template will not change your folder templates if you
have manually changed them. One little trick I use to avoid confusion or
doubts in case folder or account templates are different but quite
similar, is to include this do nothing line as my last line in account
templates:

%COMMENT=This is default%COMMENT=

If this line dean not show when you look at folder templates it is
