No, you didn't "offend" anyone, but you changed your tune. Not a biggie. But
"diacritic mark" is WRONG. It's like saying, "Bill Gates lives in a mansion
house."

I wouldn't necessarily generalize that way. Did I offend?

On the scale of global technical writing problems, 0 being nothing at all and
100 being, I dunno, two spaces after a period, I consider accent versus
diacritic to be ... a 2. A Friday trivial thing. No battle actually, not even a

Does that put things in perspective? And so it goes

Wow. We don't argue these things at work. We're too busy orchestrating
the developers' efforts in documenting their C# code using doc
comments and chasing after business cases from which to design the
documentation. ;) I'd honestly call it an "accent mark", much for the
same reason people call "it" a "PIN number". Familiarity. Translators
know what you mean and adjust accordingly, unless your translator is a
machine, in which case abandon all hope. LOL!

I write in general, I use accent.

I'd do exactly what you're doing... keep using accent, snicker into your
hand, and let 'em go off on their merry way.

How are you using it? What's the context? Are you using it to inform
translation peeps that such and such a letter requires an
accent/diacritic? Or do you actually use that word somewhere in your
app?

Well, except if you're being all anal and grammar-proper and all
that, then it *is* diacritical mark or diacritic. Diacritic mark is
grammatically incorrect.

Accent or accent mark works for me. Depending upon the audience,
diacritical mark might cause the reader to pause.

Diacritical mark or accent. I have never seen "accent mark."

You're right that "diacritic" means " a mark near or through an
orthographic or phonetic character or combination of characters
indicating a phonetic value different from that given the unmarked or
otherwise marked element,"
so you might want to direct the decision maker to M-W 11.

Can you at least get them to say "diacritical mark" (i.e. using the
adjectival form)? That's be a small improvement.

[TCP] I lost the battle but thoughts

2007-07-06 Thread Brierley, Sean
Hi,

I lost the battle but what are your thoughts?

In our tech docs we are using the term "diacritic mark."

I argue that we should say "accent mark" because more people know what
that is. Also, diacritic is not an adjective. So, it should be
"diacritic" not "diacritic mark."

I lost. And am okay with that. (Am secretly using "accent mark" in my
documentation, bwahahahaha. )

Any thoughts from any of you who translate, are having a slow Friday, or
both?

Cheers,

Sean
