Re: [TCP] Fwd: NYTimes.com: Amusing, but Not Funny

2008-10-15 Thread John Hedtke
Along similarly off-topic lines, I want to suggest something for the
group: Christopher Buckley (Bill's son) decided that he was going to
vote for Obama, published that in his column in the National Review,
and basically got fired for it. The point of this is not so much the
occurrence or even his choice, no; what's particularly enjoyable is
reading LITERATE responses to his column. (Remember
those? Literate, thoughtful things that were spelled correctly and
brought up things you might not have thought about instead of Faux
News barking?) I actually felt CALMER reading the responses to his
column during a break this morning when I had to stop spell-checking
so my eyes 'd refocus. It's nice to know that there are people who
can write and think left.

Re: [TCP] Do lights blink, flash, or both?

2008-03-31 Thread John Hedtke
Run enough juice through them and they pass through a transitional
state of being a Noise Emitting Diodes (NED) followed by a
permanent change to a Darkness Emitting Diode (DED). :) :)

To actually answer your question, I'd agree with you: a consistent
on/off (particularly an even one, but that's probably just me) sounds
more like flashing, whereas a specific number of times lighting up
would be more like blinking. I've a feeling that this may be a
distinction without a difference, however. By any wild chance,
does... oh, the MS Style Manual or the CMOS have anything to say
about this? (I seriously doubt the latter does; the former just might.)

I've been using the word blinking consistently, but now I'm
second-guessing myself. Would a consistent on/off pattern be flashing
while a specific number of times lighting up be blinking? Or is one
word correct in both instances?

Thanks in advance!

[TCP] Interesting stuff for online help tools

2007-11-20 Thread John Hedtke

W/R/T the recent discussion here about RH2000 and would it do Word
2007 and then the (very surprising) recent statement that RH7 won't
(which I'm looking into), I just discovered that there are live demos
for MadCap Flare, Blaze, and Analyzer. Info's here:
https://www.madcapsoftware.com/training/flaretraining.aspxhttps://www.madcapsoftware.com/training/flaretraining.aspx

. I am fairly sure that Flare does Word 2007.

I did and you're right. Marilyn (who is a Smart Cookie) immediately

We keep thinking that it's so nice that the actress has good work

And here I though they didn't make comedians like Bill Murray anymore.

:D I ~just~ got in the mail yesterday a DVD of Loose Shoes, which
I've wanted to see for ages.

Ray Wise is perfect.

Yup! Agreed. :)

Re: [TCP] OT Vent re: STC

Last I heard, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. And until any
of us have walked in Paula's shoes, I think it's plenty disrespectful to
discredit her opinion.

Paula was very active in STC, and very vocal about her issues. But STC never
listened.

STC was very good about not listening in them days. It's why I
became a Board member. They're better about listening now.

My opinion? She's right... STC is not about furthering technical writing but
is instead about furthering the organization. And although I think it's less
so now, many of the leaders within the organization are more about
furthering themselves than furthering technical writing. It's why I resigned
my membership (specifically, as a direct result of the director-sponsor of
my region). Although I do see some improvement, I don't see where being a
member benefits me, as a longtime writer. So I've yet to re-up, and dunno if
I will. The jury is still out.

At any rate, my point is... I agree with Paula. Although it's her opinion,
it's actually quite accurate.

I think you've both put a great deal of thought into this and, given
what you're saying here, I agree that the STC is definitely not the
organization for you.

Re: [TCP] Does STC only care about itself?

2007-11-12 Thread John Hedtke
At 08:56 AM 11/12/2007, you wrote:
I don't drink the Kool-Aid. Sorry, but I just don't. I do see improvements.
But not a single one of your arguments are enough to want me to re-up. In
fact, most of what you mentioned should have been done years ago, or else
don't apply to me (the publications, for example, didn't really provide much
for me). So the current leadership is finally doing something about what we
do. For some of us, it may be too little too late.

And if it is indeed too little, too late, I'm unhappy about that,
but, as you say, it's too late for anything we're going to be able to
do in the next few years to change your mind. It's a shame but I
must accept that this is so.

For those who are not completely disgusted--which almost included me,
btw; it's why I ran for a Board seat a few years ago--I think we're
already seeing changes in a number of venues that are very
positive. The Executive Director is dazzling (my ability to even use
that word in this context says something) and we're actually able to
see where our money's going. And, thanks to the new IMIS software, I
am probably about to have my long-time dreams of a speakers bureau
and a newsletter article/writers directory become reality. Those
were two of my strong goals for running for office. There's a tiered
dues structure in place, a much more intelligent method of
distributing money to chapters and SIGs, and a completely
restructured conference. I'm happy about things and getting happier
the more of the old horseshit we get shoveled out and cleared away.

Again, we ARE entitled to our own opinions. I would prefer to see someone
respond who's not in an active leadership role.

Damn straight you are! Someone who's not in an active leadership
role should stick their oar in here, too. (This may be a smidgen of
a challenge on this particular list, since it's somewhat filtered for
senior people, but there's gotta be someone.)
