Re: [TCP] Postings on TCP are being archived by another service

2007-10-18 Thread Chris Borokowski
The way such an archive attracts people is through searches for
specific topics. When they find a mailing list, they start to see it as
a source of information, and will join for the convenience in some
cases.

The site in question needs better spam protection, is all. It's not
terrible as it is. We are more likely to be exposed through flaws in
the mailing list software, and there's nothing any of us can do about
that (unless you feel like fuzz-testing the code).

Re: [TCP] Postings on TCP are being archived by another service

2007-10-17 Thread Paula Stern (WritePoint)
Sure there is.

You create a private email list - you don't let anyone else on but
yourself...bingo...a private email list - no spam, no harvesting, nothing.

As for the rest of the discussionwhat's a few more hundred spam messages
a day?

Just kidding...

I can understand the purpose of a private archive - as a service to its
members. With a public archive system - it's true it attracts readers, but
does it really attract members? Why join (and open yourself to more spam)
when you can read the messages without joining? At least if you don't plan
on taking part in the discussions?

All in all, I'd prefer a closed archive to avoid more spam - with an open
archive - you are hardly going to know where they got your address from or
anything else.

Having said that, I'm so bombarded with spam, I doubt one more list would
matter.

Both TECHWR-L and TCP have worse security than Yahoo lists, LISTSERV(r),

This is probably a really good idea. On another list I was on, one
member's disagreement turned into a fracas, and things were said that
should not have been associated with anyone's name (although very
politely and masked).

2007-10-16 Thread Seb
Hi Sue,

You may want to consider setting up another email address specifically for
mailing lists. That way, you can still participate in discussions while
preserving your anonymity. I do this myself so that my name won't show up in
web searches.

I like to fly under the radar :-)

2007-10-16 Thread Sue Heim
It's got less to do with my email address (as I do have specific email addys
in use). It has more to do with someone archiving what I post and someone
else being able to access what I've said. There are reasons I don't
subscribe to techwhirler, and why I'm (generally!) very professional on the
AuthorIT Yahoo group. All other lists I'm on are closed. Can't view posts
unless you're a member. And membership is screened.

What it does is kind of neat otherwise, which is redirect to a mailto:

Not speaking in defense of the company.

Re: [TCP] Postings on TCP are being archived by another service

2007-10-15 Thread Lisa Gielczyk (TCP ADMIN)
Hi Rhonda,

I did set up this archive service, because it has a search feature. I
didn't know about that button at the bottom that links to the poster's
email address. I'll check into it further.

Thanks for letting me know!

Warm regards,
Lisa G.

In the case of HATT it was archivesat.com who was pirating content.

[TCP] Postings on TCP are being archived by another service

2007-10-15 Thread Rhonda Bracey
Hi Lisa et al

I don't know if this is official or not, but I just got a Google Alert
for a posting I made on TCP, which is reproduced here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/tcp@techcommpros.com/msg02418.html.

I guess of most concern is that the "Email" button at the bottom of the
post opens Outlook with my address plain to see... Even though the body
of the message has "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".

Is this an official copy, or is someone harvesting the TCP messages
without your knowledge?

I know that Bill Swallow had a bit of a fight with something similar for
HATT a few months back. Don't know if it's the same 'service' or not.

Rhonda
