Re: [tech-cord] XP Pro

2002-09-05 Thread Steven Scarbrough

We've got two workstations on XP and Novell and they seem to like Netware
very well.

Then there's BVU, where all their 200 new laptops have XP. (Old lease
expired, now have Gateway 1400s) If you want, we could ask one of their
techs come out and talk about how they manage. Might be interesting, but
it might have too much a Novell slant for some.

>From what I gather, the original thread asked for info on managing
policies in XP. I'm not sure they do much of that, other than using
Zenworks to manage the MAC addresses in their WAPs. It seems to me that
the summer HD load has all their printer drivers, but gives students total
Admin access to the local OS. Let me know what you think and I can
pursue this if you like from my end.

Re: [tech-cord] XP Pro

2002-09-05 Thread Tim Buenz

Hi,

We are using VCasel 2000 on our W2K Pro workstations at our HS and things are working
very well. I would be glad to demo the system if you want to come and visit. The VC
website is: http://www.vcasel.com/vc2000.htm

Under FEATURES you can watch video demo's of the program options. Scott F. has been
trained on this product and Beacon is an authorized reseller (Chet has also been thru
training and done several installs). The VC company is out of Illnois and great to
work with.

Re: [tech-cord] XP Pro

2002-09-05 Thread Scott Fosseen

I have been looking for any information on this. The trouble is that XP is
designed for a business model, where it is one person per workstation. All
the information I have came across fits in that model, not the school model
where users move from system to system. A similar problem to how Microsoft
handles home directories. That was a simpler solution to solve though to
match the needs of the schools.

So far the simplest to use solution that I have used is Visual Casel (VC).
VC pushes the settings to the workstation when a user logs in, and will set
things like "Power Users". I have not seen a solution that makes XP manage
like 9x. As soon as I can find a good solution I will set up a class and
let everyone know. So far the basic solution is what Bruce has described
already.

Re: [tech-cord] XP Pro

2002-09-05 Thread George Tuttle

Bruce,

XP has a pretty sharp learning curve, not as easy as going from 95 to
98 or 98 to ME or any of those to 2000 Professional. I also work with
several businesses that bought new machines this summer but had me install
either ME if they bought regular XP or Professional 2000 if they had XP Pro.
They didn't want part of their systems on one operating system and part on
another. As they add more machines with XP, at some point they will switch
enmasse. It now seems that they made a good choice even though I had my
doubts at the time. I think your request for XP training is right on track.

George

With Novell one might use ZenWorks. WIth Microsoft would one use System
Management Server (SMS)?
